This technique is also used to verify email addreses by spammers. They include an infected image in an email that essentially acts as a email receipt confirm. They blast out a gazillion spam emails and wait to see which ones are read. Then your on a list forever. If you open spam email formatted in html and it includes images, you are vulnerable. Most decent email progs let you disable images and provide some level of protection.
