I want to fuse 1" squares of stained glass sheet glass into blocks for making marbles.

I believe the fusing temp is 1400 - 1450F but can anyone post a schedule of time vs temp to accomplish this.

How fast do I heat up the kiln and once at the fusing temp how long do I hold it there and what rate do I cool at?

Thanks

Bill

Hey this is a good place to learn about fusing, http://www.warmglass.com/ Jag

i'd experiment. go to 1300 and look in the oven and see if the edges have softened and maybe they would tack together enough for you. as far as speed and everything else just fire it up as quickly as your oven goes. if it works it works. know what i mean?
if you really want facts look around for an article by drew fritts in glassline about marbles with bullseye glass.

Boyce Lundstrom's books will tell you specifically what rate to fire at and at ABOUT what temp.

MY EXPERIENCE tells me: 1" squares, 3-4 layers will tolerate 400 per hour up to 1350, hold for about 5 minutes and check it. You just want a tack fuse, if you take it to full fuse you'll wind up with a puddle that's 1/4" thick and 1 1/2" in diameter.

More layers? slow it down.

Fire on Thinfire and just tack it. You don't want kiln dust or kiln wash IN your marbles now do you?

I have even done this with Boro sheet in a rapid fire kiln. Works great.

Have Fun, and Good Luck!

What type of glass are you using? 400DPH is fine for that size but 1350 might be to low to fuse 1455 is what I use for spectrum 1465 is what I use for bulls eye. Then anneal at 960

Hope this helped

yes, good point Coil1002!

Every kiln will have a different fusing temperature. In my 14x6 kiln Bullseye tacks at 1350 and full fuses at 1425, in my larger Skutt kiln these temps are 25-45 degrees higher to compensate for all the furniture, dead space, and the shelves in the kiln.

Also remember, we're talking about what the thermocouple is measuring, not the actual glass. You'll have to develop that through trial and error. Once you do, you'll have an intuitive understanding of that procedure.
And, that 960 may be the strain point of Bullseye. I wouldn't just hold there. I'd cruise at 25 DPH down from 1030 to 875. If you like a hold, make it 980F for an hour. Remember, different kilns, different temps!

Just my final 2 cents for this year!
