my dude does this all the time,! with nice pieces, we usually hang them on the wall, or decorate something with them.

two things.
1) get mercury relays -- quiet and don't fail in the "on" state
2) make sure nobody touches your kiln but you... i have 1 schedule i keep set and don't mess with it.

For about usd150 you could build in a system (http://www.talkglass.com/wiki/Kilnbuilding;_Safety_Controller_Layout) that will prevent it happening again.

You could always use cones as a back up too. I've melted down a batch of 22 mini tubes before - it hurt my feelings and wallet.

totally my fault, i meant to set the speed of which the kiln heats up to max, instead i set the target temp to max. i should have double checked before turning it on. I wasnt mad about the loss of work at all just glad there wasnt a fire. That was scary hot. I caught it at 1850 degrees. im setting the alarm on it at 1200 and babysitting my new program

I saw this thread the other day and have been thinkin about it for a few days since. This really got me thinking about utilizing some kilns they have at school. My prof just told me they have " a big glass fusing kiln somewhere around here" and he said we could get it set up and Im welcome to use it anytime....This really has me thinking about what I could do. I guess what im trying to say is......your little mishap has inspired me so thanks bro
