Hey guys i have been lampworking officially since friday the 21st. I am 20 years old right now and working in a studio i built behind my house. Heres some pics of a couple of thie first things i have made, including my attempt at a spoon, which came out functional.
A couple dishes and pendants for the most part, going to get back out tonight to try some implosions and honeycombs. Feel free to comment if you want, and im always looking for tips.
ALSO i am having some trouble figuring out how to work my kiln controller. Its an older fuji one and i have attached a picture of it as well if any one can shed some light on it.
Thanks

your doing good.... the trick with the mouth piece is to "gather" it thick. i shape the mouthpieces before i shape the head. then when i come back to open it up its easy because its thick enough to not keep melting and adding glass to the part im trying to pick open. but once it is thick back there u gotta be alittle more careful when you come back to it with the flame. especialy if you put any color on the inside.
but i guess i should ask "how are you trying to do the mouth-piece?" to make sure we are on the same page.
what kind of tube are you using?

hey well i am using 25 x 4 mm simax tubing. I use 12.5 mm as a blow tube, but i tried pulling points these past couple times which worked ok too.
I have a big problem with my pipes cracking, also the tubing has randomly cracked on me more than once, even when i cut off a piece and set down the big chunk im not using, sometimes it will crack up near where i flame cut it.
I tried to take new pics of the stuff i just made but it didnt quite work out, so i will try in the day light.
I did a new spoon and was having a rough time on it, but decided to finish it out in order to try the picking on the mouth piece. After a few minutes of trying i got it open, so well see :D

try using 9.5 for handles. you may find that easier. I do.
sleepingpeople
01-29-2011, 04:06 AM
i will give it a shot, especially since i ran out of the 12.5 tubing. . well fresh cuts anyways, i have a stack i can clean ends up on.
The 9.5 should do ok, ill let you know. I have been working off of 25mm only, i have a tube of 32mm but i dont know if i am ready.
Just had about 3 great hours on the torch though, made a couple dishes i am really happy with, and have another spoon attempt. Tomorrows update will be beefy
l33t:weasel
01-29-2011, 08:35 AM
when your tube cracks on the bench its from thermal shock. touching cold glass with the flame without getting it all the way hot, or hot all the way around the circumference makes it crack a short while after you set it down. you gotta make sure the flame only touches the tube exactly where you are flame cutting. and you cant use the condensation as a reference point because its always gonna be moving
the best way to learn about thermal shock (i think) is to make it happen on purpose
with some pieces of glass you don't care about. like the end of a 12mm rod or a broken piece of tube. just get one little part of it hot and set it down back by your fan and wait a second. it might crack in a few seconds, it might take a couple hours. watch your eyes. :)

thanks, yeah i was thinking about doing something like that to the bowl. Thanks i will play around with that. Cant wait to scope some new techs to try out sometime
Just a thought, if you do your spoons and such with just clear and fume you'll get the shaping and control down without wasting time and color. Also, if you get those honeycombs flat you can lense them with clear. They look way cooler lensed. It helps me to lense it while it's still on the tube and then pop the disc off. That way all you have to do is trim the excess off from around the lense before you do your final shaping.
Color is expensive. Get the shapinf down until you have a sellable product. Once the shapinf becomes second nature start getting more in depth with your designs.

the 4 dishes in that picture i sold have sold for 10 each plus five shipping for each one. I just made some more stuff tonight. I havent tried fume at all to be honest. it is best to work on clear spoons your right, but i dont mind dressin them up a notch ;)
went to trevs this afternoon
i played with some millies tonight and a bit of sky blue tubing, made a neat spoon, some dishes, and a couple pendants. Im havin a great time, so if i waste a stick of color im not hurt. Im doing them clear for them most part though

TikQ, I am just to new to understand POP the lens off, how exactly is that done?, I heard people use this term but not sure of its meaning and have 0 formal training!.
You art the end of your bubble and then condense it from the tip so it's flat. Take you'r clear rod for your lense, melt a gather and tag it to the middle of the flat end of the bubble. Smoosh the clear onto the bubble so it covers the whole comb. Then heat behind the flat part of the bubble, blow and pull the tube away from the bubble while puffing. This makes it super thin behind the lensed bubble. Focus your flame on a side of the thin section close to the lensed comb and blow to pop a hole. Tear the tube away from the lensed comb and trim up the excess however you please. Cup shears are the easiest way.
And sleepingpeople it's not as much about the expense of color as it is the amount of time put into it. If you just do fume and clear you can make them twice as fast, therefore twice the practice. I'm at pretty much the same spot as you in my lamping career. I wasted a bunch of time trying to art up my first pieces when I first started making pipes. They looked like fumed, dotted, and lined turds haha. I recently started just doing fume and shaping and now can make 3 decently shaped hitters in the amount of time it would take me to make one dotted up hitter.
I'm a strong believer in fundamentals ;-)

Thanks steak, i have definitely heard something like that before and found that sometimes patience really is the key needed to unlock something new or something done better. Its hard to know where to focus on or what to practice more/most when i work alone since im starting still.

nice man! a little tip on the pipe for stretching it you want to make sure you get it plenty hot or you just end up stretching a really thin spot in the tube. you dont wanna try and pull as soon as its hot you kinda wanna let it start to condence a bit. then slowly and lightly pull and this will give you more of a flowing stretch and make it alot thicker throughout . keep it up and torch time is what helps the most!

"gathering" is potentially the most important place to focus your practice on, it will effect everything else. if you haven't this yet get a piece of clear rod, around 10mm is good, and just gather marbles side by side down the length of the whole rod. then when your working on a pipe if you want to gather the mouth piece or a maria its just the same as gathering those mibs on the rod.

Take down dirty pics, they are not welcomed here.. something about laws.
I think that your dishes are coming along nicely though.
on your pipes, do you do the mouth piece first and attach a blow tube, or do you work the bowl and mouth piece last. I don't think there is a wrong way, as long as the end product is what you are looking for. Took me a while to get shaping down and I"m still not 100%.
If the spoon is going to be about 3 or 4 inches, I will condense to about 2 or 3 inches. Attach a punty and heat up the center of the mass. stretch it out and form the mouth piece. attach blow tube with cold seal, shape bowl and the rest.
I used to do the bowl first, and until phatty showed me how he does a mouth piece I had nothing but trouble with that order. I have not gone back to try it the other way, but I have seen how it could be done really quickly the other way.

It looks like you may be reducing your striking colors a bit too much. Try to stick with a neutral to oxy flame when working with most strikers. This will keep them from going that creamy color.

Impressed Man, your dishes have come a long way in last couple months, looking real good..ofc keep it up...really digging the Elvis and the last one!...
Well if you coil on top of a flair technically it is rod turned into tubing but yea I totally feel that. Your colors are looking less reduced. In some spots they are still getting a bit creamy but they look good. Try raging the oxy until the very end and then just flash it in a reducing flame

thanks haha glad you guys like that elvis dish. to be honest i wasnt a big fan of it but it grows on me :D
so high oxy, then hit it with high propane at the end?
what do you guys do when you find a color just just bubbles. i have been pretty lucky cause nightshade, elvis, and midnight lav dont really bubble that easilly, but some other colors just wanna burn. do you justn ot use them when you making say like a honeycomb
S.HY.
03-18-2011, 12:20 PM
when i have a color that just wants to burn i turn down the heat just to the point that it doesn't boil.
sleepingpeople
03-18-2011, 01:36 PM
word, but if im trying to make like a 50 cent piece sized leaf or heart pendant which i have someone wanting a grip of them, its not very efficient to work on a low heat. better to just use a better color? i was coating in clear but i found then it wouldnt come out as even when i mashed and i would have to trim
Try dropping a piece of the color stick down a piece of tubing. Heat from the closed end and work the air out while collapsing the clear onto the color. The only thing you have to watch for is when you use the rod after you apply a dot sometimes the color will become exposed and boil. Twist the rod when you apply to make sure that doesn't happen.
Sorry if that didn't make much sense, but it helped me when I was trying to work boily colors.
sleepingpeople
03-19-2011, 11:43 AM
yeah i understand how to do the sleeving of a color essentially but then the clear always shows up when i mash into my shape and i end up having to spend time trimming it off and stuff when i feel like i didnt have to coat it to begin with.

Sleeping:
My son is 13 and is a great kid. The reversals are very easy with a little practice. I used THIS TUTORIAL (http://www.fredrossidesign.com/page7.htm) ( the last set of pictures on the bottom of the page) and applied it to what I'm doing with spoons.
This is a great use of those Momka Multi odds Phyllis sells at Trev's. Twisting them up is fun and i bet the practice / experience MIGHT(what do i know, I'm a Noob!) translate well / help with line work later on down the road?
I'll drop you a PM later this week and you can come on up and check out the studio and do some work. It would be nice to watch another person at the torch, As I have yet to see anyone else melt other than in video recordings / streams.

so i made a little bub for myself but it cracked at the very very very end of the process :( right when i hit the blow tube for the mouthpiece with a small flame to finish it up it was game over.
i sometimes see people taking pics of their work with their blowtubes still on there, is this because i should have garaged it and taken it off after i built some heat back up, or is this cause they are lazy? i know that while i was working on the piece at some points water dripped down throw the tube into the hot mouth piece and burned away, could this also be a factor in weakening the glass then reinforcing that i should have garaged it? or maybe it wasnt meant to be haha

garage it before you take the blow tube. good progression though, keep it up kid

damnit that really sucks
it would have been kinda neat. but ok wow thanks. any other tips for removing the final blow tube? or just to garage and let it build up some heat first
You don't have to garage it, just make sure it stays warm. If you are taking a while on the bowl end then carefully reheat the whole piece occasionally. All about keeping the thing warm
sleepingpeople
04-03-2011, 12:51 PM
well the thing is tho like when the flame touched that area of the blow tube the whole mouth piece cracked down then into the can. I am sure it was just cooling off way too much. but garaging it would be a safer way prob
Garaging it is safer yes. But it certainly can be done without it. If you keep it warm through the whole process they you won't have an issue when it comes time to take it off the blowtube.

your comming along nicely, your crop circle honeycombs are real sweet, and your rettis are comming out way better than any of mine have...keep it up. If i could suggest where to go next with your spoons I would say start doing wrap and rakes for alot of reasons. First, you will start to get the hang of what colors do what, how they look under clear, and without clear over them. you will learn how to melt lines in evenly even when they arent covering the whole surface, which is harder than if you had lines coating the whole thing i think because the gaps have to fill in. you will learn how to pull stringers well, also you will get the hang of laying lines down the length of the tube when raking, which is a huge help when you start to try and color tubes and do tube pulls, clear coats and everything, you will have a head start if not have mastered these techs from doing wrap and rakes. good luck brotha

thank you much kind sir. i will give some wrap and rakes a shot. i have a lot of stringers pulled.. they were preggos at first in like january and some of febuary, but they been getting a lot more consistent as of late.

04-23-2011, 09:09 AM
yep trick with stringers is wait a second after takeing them outta the flame for the heat to even out then pull. gradually harder till its all the way cool. i also noticed alot of your work looks like its super reduced. which will burn out the colors or give them that milky or somtimes pink look. try running a flame that hisses like frying bacon and doesnt have lots of orange in the top of the candles. that will give you a better chance of not burning out colors that are temp sensitive. looking good buy the way man keep it up and keep the glass in the fire!

good stuff man. i really like a couple of your marbles. and nice rettis. i cant for the life of me do a retti. i will some day... but screw it for the time being. anyway... i noticed on your last pipe that the mouthpiece and the bowl are a lil thicker than the chamber of your pipe. it looks like you heated that up, kinda let it even heat, and then stretched (which is the right way)... but... I would try and keep it in that flame longer, and get that glass to really gather thick, and then stretch it out. My pipes were like yours when i started them, then I got to visit a lampworking friend of mine, and he showed me to do that. Its been working really well. It'll take a lil time to get used to it, but ultimately it will strengthen your pieces. if it starts getting too outa control when you are gathering, take it outa the flame. and when gathering, try to tilt the piece right and left a little bit so it doesnt just get thick in one spot... restrict that chamber, and pull slightly... or even just let gravity do the work for you. (still keep control, dont just let tube just droop down to the groud obviously) but keep it up man... glad you're progressing

hey so side note,
my kiln heats up fine and stays hot fine.. but sometimes you know when you first turn it on it makes that kinda buzzing sound when its workin hard to heat up?
sometimes once mine has been at 1050 a while and its holding.. mine will begin to make that kinda buzzing sound like its working hard to stay at temp. is this a common problem and is there a part i should look to ? i know thats a pretty general description.. let me know if you need more info.. aim 99 ls digi
smolder holder
04-24-2011, 06:58 PM
The buzzing you hear at startup is the coils heating up, totally normal.
The other sound you hear is the temp alarm. Mine does this too and it's a minor irritant for me so I haven't taken the time to figure out how to turn it fully off. The controller has built in alarms that will go off when you reach your desired temp, and when the kiln temp gets below or above a certain threshold temp. One of these must be on when the kiln comes new for some reason. I don't think it's anything to worry about.
sleepingpeople
04-25-2011, 02:20 AM
hmm okay it just seems like it will buzz like the coils heating when its at 1050 already though. on another note i sold my rasta slide, the white accented pipe, a marble, a dish and a couple other things tonight! sweet :)
sleepingpeople
04-27-2011, 10:12 AM
i dont know if that buzzing is just the internal alarm or what? cause last night it was doing the buzzing thing and i actually noticed the kiln going down a degree or two for about 10 seconds then i turned it off and back on a few minutes later. some thing in it buzzes like not like an alarm though, and more than it used to. ill get a vid if i can
smolder holder
04-27-2011, 11:49 AM
Sounds like the same thing my kiln does. I could be wrong but try and pay attention to where the sound is coming from. The sound the coils make on startup is obviously coming from inside the kiln but the "alarm sound" doesn't originate there. Maybe I'll look into it this weekend. If you're curious about the alarm settings you can download the full instructions for the controller in pdf from their website.
I'm almost 100% sure we have the same thing going on.

hey, sorry i didnt make it in the shop yet to fire on the decals, i am moving to another city where i will have a small apartment near the state glass school where i am beginning my 3 year aprenticeship to become a scientific glassblower, so when its august i need to move 450 km to my shop to make stuff (smoke related), i think ill be able to work at the shop at the school and make sections , they have lathes, saws and all the other great stuff, and take them home with me and assemble them in my own little studio, next week i have the apartment completed and the i have 2 weeks free time to do whatever i want so i think ill be sending out your box end of july - first week of august
sorry again, but its very exciting at the moment for me, havent touched my torch for 3 weeks only the steering wheel of my dodge ram truck :D

Sick, collab with Quave sounds like a good plan. What's that red on the dish all about? It looks purple on one side like a normal silver color, but bright red on the other side.

its the rick moss, its a light purple haze over og moss, so the inside looks all mossy and really reflects well with the light purple haze which you can see from the outside and strikes out nicely. i think thats the one you mean?
edit: i think you mean the linework in the color pull? Its a pull that has a striking color i wanna guess silver creek but totally wrong i think and the inside of the dish shows all the colors melted together.. especially noticeable in the teal. the bottom of the dish still shows what the pull looked like before i worked it for some reason, you can see all the lines and the color looks normal. i think its sweet

thanks
from the top to bottom its Rick moss (light purple haze over og moss), then lazer blue (cobalt over og moss), the rick moss again, SLYME, then RM, LB, RM, then kryptonite with silver fume, then in the base there is mystery adventurine. each section separated by jet black pinstripe
