These vessels and lidded jars were made by my girlfriend Tanner S. and the Boro. marbles and flowers were made by me. These Colabs represent my girlfriends first pottery attempts and some of my first attempts at solid Boro. work. They were all given to my family and Tanner's as christmas presents. They were a blast to make for me and her since we were both expermenting and trying to combine to different mediums. There will deffinatley be more to come in the future. I will be posting more of the colabs and more detailed shots on my glass artists page if you want to check out some more pics.

Very Cool! I have been wanting to do that for ages. I would like to see a picture of the underside of the lid. Did you just flatten the punty to keep the "marble" in place?

The marble is glued into the ceramic lid with e-6000 glue. We have done several weight tests on the marble fixed to the lid with no breaks yet. The hardest part is matching the size of the marble with the dent left in the ceramic lid. Because the ceramic shrinks after its been kilned it gets a little tricky. Ill take some pics of the underside of the lid for ya later Nightcat.

Oh, I see. I have been talking to the pottery instructor at the local craft center about doing teapot lids and other stuff. I did make a couple successful experiments with sort of "riveting" the marble to the lid. On the up side it worked, on the down side my friend who did pottery lost his job and moved taking the test piece with him. The one piece we did was sort of crude, neither of us knew if it would work so we just knocked something out without putting a lot of artistic time into it. I don't have it any more so I can't even show pictures but it did work.
Here is what we did:
I made a marble but left a ~10mm diameter and ~15mm long punty firmly attached to the marble. I annealed the marble/punty. My friend made a lid with a hole in the middle that ended up being just slightly larger than 10mm after firing and glazing. I then put both the lid and the marble back in the kiln and brought them up to ~1100. Using a couple of grabbers I took both the lid and the marble out of the kiln and stuck the punty through the hole and got the end of the punty white hot and mashed the whole thing down.... kind of like a rivet. The glass was mechanically connected to the pottery but not fused and so nothing cracked. I put the lid in the kiln and annealed it again.
Cool work. When you make more be sure to post some pictures.

Just to clarify for someone who may read this who doesn't know that much about glass...
It was a rod fused on to the marble, not a punty (which would be a cold seal)...

Yeah, my bad! Thanks Christopher.
Normally it would be a cold seal but I wanted the rod to be permanent, so it was fused on.

matt, i really like the mixed media.......i think the knob lids would be very saleable as functional, practical pieces.
nightcat, that's a great tech idea........too bad you don't have the test pieces around to verify longevity....

Sweet ideas with the mixed media! Has anyone tried sticking thin shards of boro into the piece before it is dried and glazed? I remember seeing some pieces with small softglass inclusions that were fired and reacted with the glaze. Seems like some of the boro colors might have more of a reaction potential with glazes since most of them have so many more shades per color than softglass, or even some exotic powders or something sprinkled on over the gaze.

We have tryed to put boro in with pottery while it was in the glaze cycle of firing. The boro melted flat into a pool but cracked the cup we put it in. We want to try soft glass (coe 90 or 96) with the same technique but I know nothing about soft glass. We want to eventually try all these techniques and combine as many medias as possible. Art can heal all pain if you love your art enough. Peace out.
