Just curious, its like 48 degrees today. Not bad, the lowest I can remember is about 40. What is your avarage shop temp in the coldest winter months?

I keep the shop at around 60 no matter how cold it is outside. I just cannot stay focused when I am cold. It is expensive though, especially this winter. The other morning it was -15. I can't wait to move away from this frigid wasteland.....

Although, come summer time, I will have completely forgotten this attitude and I will once again love this climate :)

It has been super cold this winter and I work at night so even more so, usually below 20 but for a while there it was below 10.

when i turned on my kiln three days ago it read 9...it is hard keeping any heat in my 11x8 shop. i just wear tons of layers. i usually don't see my breath after the third hour.

it usually hits the mid forties by the time i'm ready to split

I let it warm up for an hour or so along with the kiln, which gets it up to about 45 on a cold day, 60 on a "warm day" (35 or so outside).

I have a little pool of warmth under my heater though that's likely 60ish.

It's usually 30-40, hard to keep it warm with the ventilation going. The only thing that really bothers me is that my feet get numb when it's really cold out. My boyfriend thinks I have a circulation problem because my body's adapted to the cold.

Yep I used to deal with it but now with the external wood burner its nice I will never have a shop with out one although I live in rual areas and have cut wood as a kid and don't pay for wood just gas oil and labor.

Which I need to do more of I am up to 238 and need to lose a pound or thirty.

Wood stove in the shop keeps it in the 70's all winter. Even when it's down in the single digits.

trey, do you use outside air to supply the wood stove? Ive been wondering if my ventilation system would affect the smoke going up and out the chimney.

Yes I use outside air to feed the stove. I also pipe in makeup air through the table in front of the torch. This really helps keep that draft off your back. Good insulation is a must as well. I have 2 10 x 8 garage doors in my shop. You wouldn't believe the difference it made when I insulated them.

The average temps have been about 40ish but around christmas it was colder and in the low 30s and it has even snowed some which is weird for this area. I don't see how yall are dealing with colder temps because when it starts getting in the 40s then I become miserable. I dress warm for it but my feet are what get to me after a few hours. Today has been in the 60s and it has been perfect. In a few months i'll be cooking out there.

lol Jenni are you talking about outside temp?

I would love for it to be 40 outside temp, my shop would be around 55 inside then. Nice and warm lol.

Ohhhhh thats what I need Kalera! I don't mind the outside temp but its my feet that get so cold to where they start cramping up and stuff this would be perfect.

Hey Kalera, just put your shoes on your kiln, have two pair at the shop so you can just switch if they get cold, works wonders.

Haha not a bad idea at all! Dunno if my boots will fit... I might have to switch to slip-ons.

I've used a mat like that for about three winters now. they are great! I've got two of them in the shop. My electric bill stay's pretty much the same, when they are on. You would not believe the difference they make.

All right, that's just the push I need to do it... I think my feet getting cold is the only thing that keeps me from working longer hours in the winter. It'll pay for itself with just one longer day of production. Thanks for the feedback!

My shop temp is the same as the outside temp - massive holes in the garage ceiling to be fixed this coming summer.

I *do* pile on the layers - 2 pr. socks, sweat-bottoms, jeans, t-shirt, 2 long-sleeve thermals, and 2-3 sweatshirts on top of that. And my hat. Cannot forget my hat. :)

Anything below 40 degrees and I end up wasting time, glass, gas, and burning myself, even though I'm bundled up and have an oil space heater at my feet. I think my brain & hand/eye coordination freeze up below 40.

Seriously considering the heated floor mat.

thats crazy head rets, i wish my shop would do that! im at about 30 or below everynight, and i use 2 electric heaters, one pointed at my legs, and one on my bench pointed at my chest. along with layers this helps me get a few hours in. but what i really want to do is close off the back of my garage with a wall basically making myself a little office..lol and then insulate and drywall the walls and ceiling so that i can climate control that bitch year long because honestly i would rather be cold at 30 than sweating in 110 degree shop with kiln and torch right next to me prolly pushin 120*, so this little constuction job is going to pay off with my produtivity increases in the extreme weather months for sure.
