Thought id go ahead and put up some sort of progress journal over here. FINALLY got my shop built and have been at this for a few weeks now and thought id put up some of the stuff I have done so far. I am mainly focusing on rods and pendants for now until I get some more money to buy up some tubes to go from there. Please feel free to critique or give some advice as I am trying to learn all I can to better my craft. Thanks for looking! :)

More fumed stuff. The electric blue circle pendant is magic. Inside it is pitch black but outside it lights up like blue fire is inside.

It looks like you're getting your loops down pretty good, but an awesome tool is peters tweezers: http://www.artcoinc.com/tweezers.php (it's down a ways on the page) makes perfect holes every time quick and easy with a squeeze and slight twisting.
Lookin forward to seein what you're going to make next!

Awesome! Well just getting over a touch of the flu but about to run out anyways and get some stuff done on the torch.
Boiseno thanks for the compliments on my fuming! I think thats what I'm going to work on in a few.
Retti: Pollen fume is excellent!
Tweek: Thanks for the compliment! :) I didn't even think about it being that color. I may see if I can pull some more of those purples out of the glass then. I was thinking maybe magic mirror the other day.
Other things I want to work on is pulling twisties. This is something I am having problems with making uniformly. Anyone get dizzy when spinning twisties?? lolz Also fumed twisties.....for some reason do not want to coil up correctly if I try making a snail shell coil on a pendant which is somewhat annoying to me. I think I flatten them out too much or something. Having a hard time getting those looking right. Sometimes it comes out awesome. Other times it looks like garbage.

Well I don't know how to keep you from getting dizzy... i do sometimes, and i feel its almost like im inadvertently crossing my eyes. then i look away and refocus. check out my progression thread... ive got some pendants, and i think i made a couple of them are kinda what you are talking about. post #24. http://www.talkglass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35660
I did the first one as a tube implosion (28 mil). i started by heating the end of the cane (with a slightly fluffy sharp flame) real hot, and tagging it to the bubble (which i actually kind of flattened the bubble to its widest diameter). Then I just let my flame hit the cane and let the cane fall into place... twist your blow tube in whatever direction you need to so that the cane just kinda droops/falls into place... you might have to twist the cane slightly depending on the angle you are tring to achieve to keep from distorting it. then hit the whole face at an angle almost perpendicular to the flame (maybe a little bit on the edge, enough to slightly implode) and when it starts to implode too much, marver the face flat (not too hard), and puff into the blow tube at the same time (again, not too hard). repeat as needed, and when you feel like you can implode it without creating any air bubbles around the edges of the cane, fully implode. if that isnt what you are talking about though... well at least you got a detailed explaination of how i did my pendant. lol. nice work though!! keep it up!

Hey thanks Varg! :) Dizziness is an issue! I also find myself going into this trance and getting dizzy when I start melting wigwags down LOL Pretty weird. Anyways the post you directed me to is pretty much what I am trying to do but with fumed twisties on a rod! I think part of my problem is I haven't gotten tubes yet because I'm a procrastinator and tubes may be easier to get this effect? So everything so far is just rods. Tonight I made a nice fumed twisty that I then coiled onto a maria and melted in. It looked decent when it went in the kiln. Will take pics in the morning of what it looks like when its done. Got a few wigwags in too which are fun. I did not make any colored twisties tonight as I was wanting to but then got distracted. Thanks again for the advice!

Rettti: Theyre backed in either ninja black or cobalt blue. Been trying to perfect them and its paying off.
Mukk: I have no idea! I got it in the Momka Shorts from Trevs glass and I LOVE it. I was thinking it is Magic Mirror, but someone said it could be Violet Medley. I've been trying to figure it out so I could buy more. The rod itself is a mint green color.

One of my favorite purples so far has been when I encased some NS Start White, with some NS Turbo Amethyst (the purple stringer in the pipe above). I want a little bit darker purple than what I got out of it, but I still really liked the the way it looks. Probably achievable by adding another layer of turbo amethyst. We'll see though, I havent tried it yet.

For sure taking those days off in the beginning are killer. When you are in that rhythm after a couple of days in a row, things just fit right. As far as stickam, there are multiple times that I've gone into a room and there are people just hangin in there not on cam. I get on cam, but I dont need to. I just get motivated seeing other people behind the torch. It's weird how it works, but I find it very helpful. Plus if you have a question, there is usually someone with their hands free that might be able to answer.
on a side note...
I haven't taken my pendants in to the shops i have gone to cause they dont sell them. Where are you selling your pendants to? i've sold a couple to friends and family, but I need to find out a place to sell them to

Ive been selling mainly to friends and family also but what happens is they tell their friends and family if asked so I am hoping it will be more word of mouth since a lot of my family are artists with other mediums. Have sold some on Etsy. I plan on doing a craft show at the end of the month with my sister who does other stuff, and possibly some vending. I have not even taken anything into shops yet.

Just came across these pics and Id thought id brag a little. Heres some pics of my shop before it got all messy. My dad and I did everything but the electric and building the shed itself. Everything on the inside was done on the cheap. Tiles were bought at a salvage store. I love tiling and I found out I was a natural at dry walling lol :D The "hood" is massive. But very light weight and it does its job. I can lift it with my pinky.

Booze....I don't have a paddle. I plan on getting one soon along with a push and some other tools but yeah its kinda frustrating at times. I have destroyed my graphite reamer also. So I get by with little tools lol I have picked up some "odd jobs" to do on the side to pay for new things as I am not working a "real" job any longer after my last corporate job. So I got some of this amber purple in the other day and have had problems getting it to strike. The heart on the right got a little purple in but I'm not sure why it didn't work out better. I did strike in the kiln at 1050 for 45 minutes. I may try it at 1100 tomorrow and see if I get any different coloring. Interesting color to play with but if anyone can give advice that would be great. I also read the NS publication but the results didn't turn out like I wanted. :( http://i51.tinypic.com/124fu3o.jpg

Throw a reducing flame at those A/P pendants towards the end. Also to kiln strike you want to bounce back and forth from 800 to 1150. My kiln was programmed to soak at 800 for 20 min then ramp to 1150 and hold for 20 min then repeat. After 4 cycles or so it'll be super purple.

Alright guys I have gotten some tubes and started messing around with honeycombs. They take me forever to do but I like the result. Here is the most recent one I did, and the best one I have done yet. My biggest problem is getting the back clean when I go to tear the tube off after condensing. I also have an issue with heating it up real hot and one of the honeycombs bubbling out and releasing air. Am I just not condensing it enough? Anyways here is my pic. The back is horrible looking and I think the best way to fix this is to get some small frit to cover the back. I also attempted to hob knob it with clear....its a little messy looking on the sides but its something that will get better.

im a little confused about the first question the "Back" of the pendant should be the front until you take it off the tube right?
you shouldnt have any air in the honeycombs, maybe you are trying to use too much of the bubble? when your melting it all in go nice and slow so it doesnt fold in on itself.

It did fold on itself some but, when I took the tube off it looked like there was a hole in the piece. I had to fill it in with some clear and then backed the entire thing with black. :twitch: It just doesn't look very clean, although I tried keeping it that way.

Ok I am in love all over again! HOneycombs are sooo much fun to make. As soon as I get tube pulls down I will be trying some implosions. Heres a little amber purple on white action. Finally got this to strike properly and it is gorgeous! So nice!

Wow thanks for the quick responses! :) And yeah Indy, I am thinking about ordering the other colors in the amber purple family. Have you tried any of them? GAH!

All of them :) Triple Passion from GA is solid, as is the DAP or SAP from NS. I tried Trautmans and loved it as well but its obviously pricey. Oh and if you have try Trautman Sable its another sweet fumey/striking color.

All of the 'amber purple mixed with something' colors are great, too - Green Amber Purple, Light and Dark Blue Amber Purple, and GA Blue Passion.

I love Mystery Aventurine! Some batches are better than others, though. The prime ones have light silver, and the silver stays transparent yielding sparkly purples.
Basically, when it tends towards an Extra Light Yellow level of silver it's perfect.

Well I got up REAL early this am and melted some glass and cannot wait to see what these new colors look like. I only got to green amber purple and butterscotch but may go back out in a bit to melt some more as I want to see what the other colors look like lolz. Man I am tired!
Julian when you use mystery adventurine do you layer it over another color or just use it as is?

Thanks Indie! :) I have more in the kiln from this morning that look a little cleaner and will try and get those up when I can take them out. I have also concluded that spinning glass is better than chocolate. :P

Nice fume job on those pendants. It's amazing what just a little gold & silver will do. I could spend a lifetime just playing with silver and clear.

pure gold can give pink, a mix of silver and gold yields the good greens you got showing. pure silver gives a nice blue on simax tubing, not quite as as nice on schott. make sure to have good ventilation and keep your face away from the fuming when applying, those fumes are invisible.
looking great :)

Hey thanks for the comments and advice! :) I am really proud of these. The pics do them no justice. I fumed the shit out of all of these this morning lol And yes I am very careful about fuming. I think tomorrow I will get up and play around again. It is so rewarding and calming. I have been so chill today lolz
edit. and forgot to add that I am using Kimble glass for this and its giving me really nice results. I was using simax, which was okay but I am impressed with the kimble.
