I invested in an 8" flat lap about 5 months ago. Has been really fun, a bit of a learning curve. I have found that paperweights are more forgiving in the creation process, pendants because of the size are more touchy in the underlayers of color -- how they lie after the grinding.
I was fortunate to get a combo xmas + birthday present of a bench grinder and v-wheel disks. It is kind of an expensive tool.. but I do mostly solid worked stuff and will make good use of it. I got a covington grinder - 400HDG model. Thing is a beast.. weights about 70lbs, very well built.
The learning curve on the vertical grinder seems pretty hefty as well. Just got the discs to test it out yesterday. Below, some pictures of a 2.25" weight. Going to take some practice on design aspect of piece and grinding angles and depth.
