For me there is a diffrence between taking pride in your work and being proud of your product...... and then letting it go to ones head and developing a holier than thou attitude. ( Is that what you mean Grape?)

Man I fully thought this was going to be a thread about toaster waffles:tongue2:
Some of the most amazing artists I have had the pleasure of meeting are some of the most laid back guys and gals you could hope to meet. Most of the folks in need of an ego check are those who have no confidence in their abilities.

pride. ok i can understand n relate to that. But also can relate that pride has nothing to do with being nice n positive to others in the same interest. you can have pride and still be nice to other glass blowers..no? Seems like peeps only get ego'd to the ones that are under em, and not to the poeple above em. skill wise.

Maybe its like a dad that was abused as a kid and now abuses his kids, only for them to grow up n do the same.? in other words. one glassblower was shown ego from a peer at one point. so when they are in the position of the peer thats the only thing they know.. just trying to think this out ya know.

Kairos that's pretty much what i meant. People thinking there the shit and act so. its cool to have confedince, but also cooler if you can be positive about it.

LTD i think your 100% right on this one. i met Salt(Luken) and he was the coolest, nicest most egoless, yet confident doods i've me.. but also have met 3x as many really ego'd out glass blowers.. i hate to say it but i think it runs thick in the community, and was wondering why?

I'm actually pretty humble about my work; I know there's a lifetime worth of experience and technique to gain and I'm ok with that.

What little I *do* know, I'm generally happy to pass along.

I suspect a lot of ego comes from suspicion in regards to losing sales. Scare off the newbie, that's one less person to compete with.

Some folks really might have earned an ego, but the best are the ones that don't show it.

At the end of the day, your farts smell as bad as mine, so get over it :)

Artists in general are prone to egos, but musicians/rappers are by far the worst I've met. Followed closely by photographers and graphic design minded types....

I imagine race car drivers and chefs can also have an ego ...

Tattoo artists?

....

Glass isn't unique or even in the lead....

but i know what you're saying. I often consider glass blowing to be the rockstar of the art world, it's bound to happen.

But seriously. You are currently on a forum filled with glass folk and most of this stuff is in the realm of sharing.... Right? Anywhere you deal with people you deal with ego. Out of curiosity, are you catching 'tude from forum people, internet people, local blowers, blowers everywhere, a group of "cool kids" or all of the above?

I would agree. "My torch and skills are bigger and better than yours"

But really I've seen some people full of shit on here that really like to call people out when they should shut their mouths. It's an art that takes time and money to learn, no one is perfect and everyone is different. If you want to bitch about someone doing or saying something different than you, then you should deal with your own demons first. i swear some of these people remind me of the gamers that are playing games like WOW that can't shut up about their lvl 1000 warrior and how much everyone else is a newb.

Peace to all. I have no beef, just chicken.

i would like an eggo, with some sausage and hash browns, yum, omelets, and syrup....ooooo, and BACON!!!!!! YES, BACON!!!!!!!!

like most mammals we have a natural hierarchy, most people pretend not to see it. most people want to be in charge of the situation that they are in and society makes us take this to a sickening extreme. through advertising, be it television, internet, billboards or other, we are groomed to believe that the best stuff is always the biggest, newest and shiniest. also we're taught that there should be a class difference in lyfe, rich is better than poor, smart is better than stupid, large is better than small, a lot of which stems from this same desire to be above those around us, and also from queen victoria but that's a completely different rant for a completely different thyme. all this being said, ego is taught to us by our parents, the media, the public school system and our own instincts from the thyme we are born. it's the evolution of our species that makes some of us able to look beyond that. so those artists out there giving you and attitude are less evolved than you are, and they're afraid of your dick.

if there were some sort of timeline graph chart it would be something like:

.5-1 yr - ego sets in
1-2 yr - ego enlarges
2-4 yr - ego peaks
5-6 yr - reality creeps/ego decreases
6-8 yr - reality sets/ ego decreases a little more
8-10 yr - humility is forseen/ ego flatlines
10+ yr - humility achieved/ ego peaks

Ok so first this thread made me think about this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c92TGgK68ZE

God that is hysterical!!

If you really want some insight in to ego, from a movie of all places, you have to watch "Revolver" it's a Jason Statham flick. It's one of those movies that you probably won't get until the last 10 min or so, it was deliberately written this way. Make sure to watch the credits too. While they are running there are video clips of interviews with psychologists, psychotherapists, etc... talking about ego.

This is one of the rare occasions where you can really learn a lot about yourself just by watching a movie, if you pay attention that is. It is actually one of my "personal growth" tools.. lol

A certain amount of pride and ego are not only healthy but necessary. They are the driving force behind progress. If no one took any pride in their work then no one would ever try to make a better anything, car, house, pipe, WORLD... Think about it. When you made your first functional piece was that good enough? Did you never try to get better shaping or try different colors?

Of course there is the flip side like with anything else. The dame drive that led to the creation of the aqueducts, or the printing press also led to the creation of the atomic bomb and Sarin gas. So moderation is key.

The short answer is... Ego exists in all people and should, but some people are just assholes...

Keep in mind that often times the people that talk the biggest feel the smallest. And in the case of "glass-ego" we are talking about artists. Historically speaking some of the most overly sensitive, emotional, quirky and least stable people on the planet.. :D (myself included of course)

If someone gives you a shitty "ego-heavy" attitude just smile at them and thank them for saving you the trouble of ever having to deal with them again. They are most likely one of the people least equipped to handle a response like that.

well my .02 turned in to about $3.50 or "treefitty" if you happen to be the loch ness monster...

Take care,
Chad

NOT sure how much this has to do with It, but its an Idea that has crossed my mind. Say we were all into knitting, I don't feel like it would peoples egos would get so blown up. But because it is glassblowing, somthing that not alot of people do, or understand, it will inflate ones ego much quicker, and farther. just and idea that ive noticed throught the past year or 2

Think of it this way, every day when you tell somone what your doing is like, oh my god you do glassblowing, How do they do that, how do they get the colors in there? and you know somthing that most people consider to be like some big mystery, atleast people around here are like that

Bacon goes with everything.
I'll be sure to report back once I've found some candied bacon.
If I can't find any, I may instead coat the bacon with a light sugary batter and deep fry it.
