how much better are these than just finding a drill-bit with a good point?

they're for a machine lathe, for turning metal - not glass.

It could work for wood too, but yeah...:o: not for glass.

Dead Point centers are normally used in the tail stock of machine lathes to center/support low tolerance work. I have used these, in conjunction with a dial indicator, for truing my lathes. You can rock your X,Y and throw out.

A machine lathe, huh? Sounds like a good tool to have at your disposal, do you machine graphite with it also?

yep. Makes a huge mess... turning anything makes a mess. Graphite makes a bigger mess. :)

when useing these to tru a lathe, how much nicer is it to work with than for example two piloted drill bits?
