The sheets of graphite. Sheets of mica. Zetex. Panther felt. Some sort of kiln liner is needed. Preferably sheets of mica. Other options?
Kiln brick getting ground into heavy pieces is getting old. Need to solve this annoying problem. Any thoughts?
Kiln shelf from ceramics store works in a pinch. And you can heat it up in the kiln and pull it out with kevlar(THICK) gloves and use it as a very hot working area for the big pieces.

The graphite stuff is called graphite foil, and is available on ebay usually.
Panther Felt is good also, lasts about as long, and is very soft... I have seen it pit out tho, looks moth eaten after a few firings. I picked up a decent roll on ebay a couple years back, was like $20-25 for enough to line my kiln a few times.
I have sheet mica in my kiln, works great. I got it at a local rock shop for like $3 a sheet. You can often find reconstituted mica sheet for use as an electrical insulator in high temp apps, but I'm not sure what they use as a binder, it might just turn to dust at 1050. If I see any more sheet mica I will let ya know... but check ebay.

Kiln shelf is not what I'm talking about. It still can scratch heavy pieces. Mullite is a superior surface for welding pieces together on a flat surface. But does it degrade by sitting in the kiln for a year?
The graphite foil eventually burns up, so does the Panther felt. Mica is the gangster surface since it is softer on the hardness scale than glass. It will not scratch the glass.
Once pieces hit the 3 lbs area the kiln just scuffs up glass. It all polishes out nice, but I would like to stop hunting for scuffs to polish out.

the graphite stuff is good and all but i hate that it degrades relatively quick, more so depending on garage temps and striking cycles.
whats the longevity on the mica ? is this the naturally occurring kind ? as in large sheet mica pulled out of the earth ? having a hard time picturing it being reconstituted.
i think you've mentioned this before doug and im about ready to re-up the kiln lining over here as well.
also never heard of mullite and would love to hear some more about that and on a side note, what about the popcorn salt action. only instead of a clay pot saucer just fill the bottom of the kiln....

Yeah I was so excited about my graphite liner and just lastnight I brought the kiln up to 1150 for about 20 min and came back to see my liner not only falling apart in the rear of the kiln but had developed wrinkles. Will have to look into mica. What about a thin piece of polished granite?

this is what I got in my kiln....
220 grit silica sand, panther felt, and mica.
the sand is great for marbles, the felt sucks... as it breaks down it leaves carbon lint on everything. It will melt into the glass.
The mica is great for anything that won't roll around. I still wipe off the kiln dust on a regular basis, since it falls down from the roof, and it's just hard to avoid a little bit anyways... but its much better than a bare floor.

^^
This guy found it. They have 1200 chucks. As well as sheets. I figure enough of the pieces arranged right will serve the purpose. Will have to order some next week.

intriguing. add me to the list for wanting to see pics/results.
i am curious to see how the silicone resin holds up to firing. maybe if it could be coated on the bottom with some refractory, or kiln patch, it might hold it together longer ?
