My roomate wanted to try some slumping.

I have never slumped anything, and know nothing about.

I was wondering if anyone uses kiln wash and pros and cons.

I was thinking i may not want it for the dust, but i was also thinking that it may slow down the wear on the firebrick?

thoughts?

general slumping advice?

For the slumping we will get a kiln shelf. I was just wondering about using kiln wash on the kiln in general.

thanks!

Yes use kiln wash. It will save your shelf. If you do not use it, you will run the chance of the glass sticking to the shelf. I use it on my shelves, and do both ceramics and lampworking.

Yes just the shelf and mold, not the kiln walls, you'll have mega dusting...

You should use Kiln Firing paper instead.. Just my 2c thats what I do.. Have been advised not to put the kiln wash on the bricks if we are doing Boro glass
That paper burns off and leaves a absolute smooth surface, you don't get that with kiln wash..

might need a bitchin' wet saw if you need to cut down the kiln shelves to fit. extra supports are handy- i like to run stuff up off the floor of my kiln near the top where its hotter. if your using a standard glass annealer- with elements on three sides- be aware that there is usually a sweet spot for just one piece between all of the elements, even though the temptation is to cram all the fuseables you can in there.

another idea about kiln wash-

i tried pushing it through a gravity feed paint sprayer, and it's a really smooth application method. unfortunately it's nowhere near the cleanup effort you'll have to make if you're not running large production.

I have successfully done some kiln slumping by lining the bottom of the kiln with 6-pack cardboard. It burns off, only works once, but it works.

Kiln wash is pretty straight forward, you paint it on your shelf the night before, and then fire it the next day, it keeps the glass from sticking to the shelf. the same as bead release. ive never used the paper. but if you do use kiln wash, make sure you put a nice even thin coat, and take notice of the brush stroke lines, they will show up in your finished piece.
