i have just finished this little beauty and i thought i would share with those of you who appreciate other mediums.
i have had some members scold me for showing my woodwork on a glass site so if you expect to see glass and will be disapointed otherwise: then please go away now.

for the rest of you please scroll down and enjoy my latest amboyna burl creation.

this fucker had more hand sanding than any other piece i have done in a very long time. my hand is still cramped up, hehe. i got aobut 70 hours in it and it did turn out pretty sweet i think.
just put first coat of finish on today so it will get a more rich and even look with 3-4 more coats.

thanks for looking.

It is absolutely beautiful, great form and the burly grain shines through nicely. Forgive my ignorance, but is it purely sculptural or is there an intended function?

Very intricate work there. Super cool jay! Was that made from a solid piece? And I'm curious about the size of it too.

What the hell man! Wood! That's not glass!!!!

j/k

That is awesome. The color is amazing. I'm a total wood noob, is the color natural, or is it a stain...no need to really answer, I'm just in awe of how cool something that literally grows on trees can look.

Really excellent piece there Jay. The spiral and termination are reminiscent of the end of a glass piece. I always love viewing your work.

Jay, my hand cramps up when I rub my wood for 70 minutes. 70 hours of rubbing and manipulating my wood would practically kill me.

You are truly a man among men.

I'm a huge fan of your wood-art Jay... wish I could do a tenth of that. I hate sanding... can't imagine what that was like.

Did you turn that on a lathe and then carve it, or is it all freeform carved? Where do you get your burls from? I've seen some websites that carry amazing burls anf timbers.

Beautiful work man, as far as I'm concerned post it up any time you feel like it.

wow, thanks again all for the kind words.

^^^yes this one was turned on a lathe to get the initial shape inside and out , then i use angle grinder to make the slits that go through it, followed by an arsenol of sanding tools and shapes to get the final look.

i always sand to a min 220 grit and usually got to 320-400 depending on the speicies.

as far as where to get the burls. i really dont have any one place i buy from.

if they have what i want or if it looks like it will make a sweet piece i go for it.

i never paint or stain my woods so i am always looking for the most contrast and figure that mother nature can provide.

this is part of the rosewood family and smells alot like cedar when working it. its very hard and dense which is the only reason this piece made it. the tines got very skinny and delicate at the termination and most any other woods would not have held up.

ughh its a hot mofo already and i get to go put a respirator on for the day while i grind away.

have a great one all. jay

sanding by hand eh? i like the sonic multi-tool.

that is a killer piece. your work always makes me want to go fire up the saws.

STROKER

power tools are an absolute must for major removal but sometimes there is not another tool out there that can do what the hand can and in this case that is what it came down too.

i own damn near every tool to sand imaginable and i never sand by hand if i have a choice.... that said, shapes like these demand extra attention to detail.

sonic multi tool aint gonna do it in this situation... at least not in my hands.

thanks for the compliment. by fire up the saws, does this mean you too are a sawdust maker?
love to see other dust makers work..

p.s. i just put second coat on it and it is already looking much deeper and richer in color.

oh yeah ive been known to make some sawdust, but i never make much money doing it. nor do i make anything close to the caliber of your work.

recently ive been playing with bringing out the natural grain with a wire brush and naty 3a, its a lot of fun, and can make for some badass finishes.

I dont know if I posted already, but like everyone else said, beautiful piece man. I made a humidor out of some Brazilian Rosewood years ago. one of the best looking woods I've ever dealt with. Super hard. Made it a half blind dovetail, and probably broke 4 bits in the process. but it was well worth it in the end. and i totally agree with hand sanding anything small enough to fit in your lap, and not using any stains. nothing beats natural when it comes to wood imo. keep up the good work bro
