torches are WAY more important than either ventilation or eye protection.

Alright all...heres the dirt..
The first torch a REd max with a major minor was able to melt the fan a little.
The Mirage did do some additional melting before a slight modification....We will se how it works now..worked on it for about an hour and a half yesterday looks good so far...

heres some more pics and a pic of the fan....:chilling:

I originally ordered a Phantom early January...
After some research i decided i would need more torch...so i upgraded at the and of FEB to a mirage and got it yesterday...:D
I can not beleive how much heat this throws compared to the Red max...LOL

Yeah man! They don't even compare! I LOVE mine. I came from a major/minor that I worked on for five years so it was a very welcome change

some of the research that i have done (and some bad advice from one of my teachers) led me to believe that the mirage might be too much torch...Not:evilLaugh

It is exactly what i nee to advance at this very chalenging art form..

Do you use a foot pedal?

Hell yes I use a foot pedal!! I can't believe I worked so long without one now. Essential tool imho and worth every penny spent on it in unwasted fuels.

Congrats on your new melter. I would do a heavy modification on that fan tho and get something that will move some air. Your health is worth the $100 investment.

I moved from a Major/Minor to a Phantom once upon a time and yeah, the difference in heat left me with no doubt that the torch was more than worth it. It would take like 25 minutes to make a 1 inch marble on a MM, mainly just the time to get the damn thing hot! On the Phantom I melted that much glass in about 4 minutes and pretty much made a marble by accident the first time I tried the torch. Hope you enjoy the Mirage, that's my favorite size of GTT.

how long do you get to blow with your Mirage on a K tank??
Not blowing enought to justify LOX right now..
..or are you using LOX

6 - 8 hoursish on a k tank

Julian

Generally, I can get a couple of days work out of a Mirage on a K tank. 8-16 hours... It depends what oxy pressure you use and what percent of the time you are using the outer flame, of course. Also whether 8-16 hours is one day or two depends on your state of mind I guess!

theres the ranges right there, i try to use at least a tank every few days or i feel like im babying it into needing cleaning.
thats really my biggest worry i can kill a tank in a day on my phantom or do smaller stuff.

I use the largest tanks I can get I think 337s. I go through 1 1/2 to 2 a week depending on how much I work usually 4-6 hours 5or 6 days a week. I think lox would be a little much for me at the moment considering I get a killer deal on my oxy right now.

I agree with Glass Tree, your ventilation leaves something to be desired. Maybe upgrade the fan next! Nice torch by the way, as you've learned it'll put off some heat.

Good luck, peace

Dude, these guys aren't talking shit, as mentioned on the first page. They are giving advice based on years of experience and with your safety in mind. If you don't want to hear it, don't post pics of your setup.

And blowing with the garage door open and a little janky fan is still not enough vent. I used to blow in my garage and used a 1,200 CFM 12" inline fan. THAT was enough ventilation! You can do it cheaper, though. Find an HVAC shop and see if they have any throw away squirrel cage fans.

So I'm not suppose to use my freezer to anneal glass? I thought the point was to cool it off????
