Last time I talked to him (last april...crap, has it really been that long???) he was pissing out kidney stones. I was trying to convince him to let me have one so I could try to encase it. I think it must have freaked him out because I never heard back from him after that...lol. Actually I think he moved shops, or something, I'll have to call him and see what's up. I hope he has the same #!

hey alacrity;
if you spend some time and gather the glass in the area that youre going to push the bowl; you wont get those dips on either side. just pick the place youre going to push and heat that area evenly and make extra glass flow from the rest of the end bubble to that area. do that till you have kind of an egg shape and then pop a tiny hole in it. You want the hole to be about the size of a wire coat hanger. before you push the bowl make sure that you blow through the piece. the air will rush through the hole and that will make sure that you dont stretch the hole when you push. good luck and have fun.

thanks rumple.. straight, centered, consistent bowl pushing is proving to be the trickiest part of learning this whole thing..

01-13-2006, 07:29 AM
if it isnt straight then heat the ridge of the bowl and GENTLY manipulate the hole till it is centered. dont be afraid to close the hole and regather and push again either. better to beat the hell out of a couple pieces then to make a ton of shitty ones

Ok then just go ahead and do what you want. You gotta learn to walk before you can run. Have fun and good luck. Probably better for all of us if you keep making pieces like the ones youre already making. Maybe tomorrow you can post pics of your first inside out multi chamber bubbler. After all; its not like there are fine points to be learned in order to advance. Just my .02

i know about and can respect the necessity to learm the fine points and believe me i'll spend my share of time on them. but right now i'm just having a blast messing around, screwing up and seeing what i can do.. i worked offhand for a couple years, was madly in love with it, then fell out because i couldn't afford to keep it up. after a five year haitus i'm working with glass again and i'm fucking loving it. let me be excited for a few days, then i'll settle down. promise. :D

wow dude.. i really held back on posting an inflamatory response to rumplephorskin's post because i knew he didn't really know where i was coming from.. but you've jumped onto an invisible bandwagon. honestly, do you really know me? do you know my past relationship with glass? do you know how old i am? or where i've been? do you know that i'm wasting my money?
my attitude is far from shit. my attitude is one of bubbling excitement.. one of a reunion with a long-lost friend. and you call it shit. this is exactly the kind of elitist attitude that turned me away from the glass studio halfway through college.
dude you really got under my skin here and i don't care if you care about it or not. it's just fucking stupid. just because i don't want to immediatley start pulling points and making spoons (which, i might add i have been doing PLENTY of) every minute i'm behind the torch, it does not mean that i am fostering some kind of immoral relationship with glass..
sorry if i seem like a son of a bitch here, i'm just proud of what i've accomplished in three days and i'm elated to be working with glass again.

yes forgive dwaine and rumple ... there good guys and are trying to help out...
the intention for most of us is to produce the best glass we can.... unfortunately we are very big into this... its kinda what defines most of or work....
im glad your getting into the flow of things keep it up alacrity... and dont worry we are mostly just grumpy and dont let this stuff get under your skin... were just hard asses... just keep doing what you feel you need to... but remeber rumple was just trying to point out that your form needs work... we all went threw a stage like that and some people really do run before they can walk or even stand up for that matter....every one on here can tell you a time they tried and failed becosue of it...
and i remeber you have hot shop experance ... keep trying her out... and grow a tough outter coating...
so far is it what you expected..?

if u wanna shit all over the first peson who tried to help make your pipes not suck, then so be it....

After reading all posts in this thread, what comes to my mind is really just that everyone has his own opinion on how things should be done. Please respect that, and try to keep a good tone - a small thing like this is really not worth making a problem out of :)

Ok let's squash this shit. Alacrity; have fun. But keep an open mind when people try to help you because life is short and you dont really wnat to waste what time you have making shit. Do you??? Im not saying that you shouldn't experiment. Experimentation is the life blood of glass. You have joined a forum with more than a thousand years of collective experience (of which WAY less than half a percent is mine). I have read some of your posts and see you trying to get what you feel you need to do this. The only reason that I asked you if you would slow down was for your own good as a craftsman. Not to squelch your artistic intentions.
BTW I don't really considder myself an artist. Most of the stuff I make is uninspired; but VERY clean.
Being able to work with glass is a good thing; but making sellable product takes a good thing and makes it WAY better.
Julian
01-15-2006, 10:17 AM
When I was about 3 months in to making lousy silver fumed spoons, I tried some sidecars: my conclusion was that they worked, and didn't crack, but I would have to get a lot better before making sellable ones, so I held off until I had some more skills and some instruction. However some of those pieces still survive, and they made people happy at the time.
If someone wants to experiment, that fine. No reason to be all weird about it.

same here. lampworking glass is more affordable and practical. i ve done the same thing. i got some pretty horrible pieces..haha. but some dont come out to bad, though nothing to show anyone, you know what i mean. every once and a while i get sick of onei after oneie after oneie, and i have a bunch of color left from a f-ed up attempt at something and ill try sealing them up blowing/condensing/blowing condesing and all i wanna do is make some big ol can i can put on a oneie turned mouthpiece onto, and yea it comes out pretty bad, its byond my skill for the time, but i had fun wasting 2 hrs and ?? $$$ making it, but ive still learned something from it, i think maybe more than sitting there and making pendants for 2 hrs. granted theres no color tech but a w/w fume, but the same as in furnace, the simpler and transparent the color application, the easier it is to see your wall thickness, seals, joints, etc.. so after all those things are right, prolly another year, ill start working on all that sick shit i/ we see on the board. but you gotta admit, when you started, you wanted to do stuff that was byond your skill level. its just fun, fascinating, entrancing, and addictive.

quaker oats....once you boil them and let them sit at some butter, cut up bananas, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar, (sometimes golden raisens)....best thing in the world. Put the cover on, let it all sit for a bit and stir....yummmmm.....might have to go make some for the kids right now...
