View Full Version : Torch to pair with an EX-15 oxygen concentrator
I am looking to set up a small studio in a third floor apartment; tanks are not an option. I plan to purchase an EX-15 oxygen concentrator and a small torch for pendants, onies and spoons. I am not new to the game, I have been melting glass for 10+ years although not very frequently over the past two. I have worked on many different torches, from a National 8M to a Delta Mag, however it has been some time since I have used anything small. Does anyone have any suggestions for a torch to pair with a single EX-15? I am considering the following:
Bobcat
Mega Minor
Mini CC
Minor
Cosmo

Cricket would be my choice.

BWG,
people say... opinions are like assholes everyone got one..
My opinion is buy a H-1 and you can run a GTT phamtom at 75% full ( 20 psi)
You have been spinning glass for 10 years+ ,If you go with this set up you are going have more options with flame size, What ever you want to make from pendents to bubblers. It is more expensive but ....you know your skills will pay for the equiptment.
just my thoughts, PM me if you want to talk about this system .

I appreciate the advice! My ultimate goal is to get a small studio set up for $1200 or less, including a concentrator, torch and small kiln. I still have my Delta Mag and a couple of large kilns however this equipment is a little excessive for what I am trying to accomplish. I once had a nice studio in my garage back home, however due to a relocation for work I am now living in a third floor apartment in a different state. There is a studio near my place that I can rent time for $15 per hour which I will use if I want to make something large, however right now I am just looking to be able to get my “glass-zen” on after a long day of work for a minimal cost. I am not looking to go back into production, I just want to be able to melt some glass on my own time.
I went ahead and purchased an EX-15 today and will give it a try on a couple of torches this weekend while I am back in my home town. I am going to see what it can do on a minor, national 8m, lynx and mid range. I don't have extremely high expectations; if it will run a minor I will be content.
I still welcome anyone’s opinion on torch options. I have yet to work on a Cricket, Bobcat, Scorpion, Mega Minor, any Bethlehem or the Mini CC. Like I said, I will be happy if it will run a minor, but obviously, the more heat the better.

Here you go..
I went into the studio , turned the oxygen generator to 10 LPM
My wife has a GTT Lynx, it runs the lynx 95% full at 20 psi
Neutral flame
31454
Oxygen rich flame
31453
I would buy a lynx,
Hope this helps

Id get 2 m-15's from Jack from unlimited oxygen, and get a Scorpion.
The lynx is Very versatile... but with the scorpion you can still get a nice pin flame and a wider heat base than the lynx, It is made for low pressure in mind. I have 2 of the m-15's running into a 10 gal air tank and I do onies, spoons, pendants all day on it!! Love this setup. Lil extra money but for what your trying to do... itd be the best IMO.
Just my asshole, lolz

I'd hate to be your neighbor.
Nodice,
Why do you say that? Noise, fumes, fire.......?
All of the above?

By the way, thanks for the feedback! While this is my first time posting, I have been reading this forum for many years and have learned a lot from it. I plan to be more involved in the future and to contribute some of what I have learned.

I agree with Jeff, buy up a H-1 from ABR, they cost a bit more than a lynx, but it's a bigger torch and you'll have the option of having a foot pedal and a much bigger flame when you need it.

The GTT Scorpion is the torch I went with when tanks where no longer an option. It will run off a single concentrator. I used a 10 gallon holding tank between the torch and the concentrator to reduce any breathing effects, and store a little presure for max blasting. No matter what torch you use you will always be dealing with presure fluctuation off the concentrator , I recommend you add an oilless compressor to keep the presure at a constant. I'm using a Gast pump connected to a huge tank, but a small airbrush compessor would do the trick.
Good luck!

I run my cheetah on a 8lpm 15psi oxycon, its not super hot but is a lot better then the little bobcat. I will get a second matching oxycon one someday and it should be much better.

I would run a Bethlehem bravo with two 20 psi 10 lpm oxy cons. That is what I am working on getting the oxy cons right now. With a foot pedal and you will blow the competition out of the water on spoons.

I have run a national off one oxy con. I would run a national 6-b with tips #2,3,5, 12 hole.
Get an AIM 84 BD for $400 plus shipping as well. That is in your price range as well.
