View Full Version : My technique is terrible, need a little guidance . . . .

So I have this pendant design that is quite good but I'm really having trouble converting the physical design to another patterning style.

The project involves producing a cab and then framing that cab in a cookie-foot like process, toss a bail on the back and cold facet the cab to a four point rocking face.

I am trying to change the kind of cab I use; different cab, same assembly style.

The cabs I have been using are all based off of solid work, like honeycombs, and I'm having trouble producing clear fronted cabs off of blown work.

I have a tube of white chino stick stack and the idea is to make a cab where there is a clear lens backed by the pattern on my zanfirico tube.

I have tried several methods:

* Terminate and blow out ball, reduce face slightly to flat-ish. Come down on that with a large gather of clear. From there I have problems with the mushrooming of the clear, so I have . . .
>>> pulled out immediately to ease shoulder back.
>>> removed clear rod and melted in like one would a marble on the front of a pipe

* Terminate and blow out ball, removing it from tube to make a coin like object, bringing the clear into the back of the coin. But I have trouble getting crisp pattern edges.

I know for sure marble makers and clear fronted, patterned backed pendant makers have a procedure that I'm clueless to.

The cabs have to be smartly shaped, that is to say the pattern must go to the edge of the cab and no further and can not be allowed to gather in from the edge or to condense like a reduction marble.

Size is not that big, 37mm are what my honeycombs measure.

All the attempts I have made look like crap and are definitely not worth finishing with frame and coldwork. I would keep going, keep trying to make it, but I feel like I'm so far off base I don't really have a good technique and process to improve upon.

Can anyone help me here?

Again, tube of stick stack chino to clear cab backed with tube.

Thanks.

try sleeving it again, terminate, then hold it horizontal and reduce the size. maybe don't inflate it as much, then you will get more of a clear lens, without screwing up the pattern......or you could scrap the tubing and go old school, and flare the end of a point lay your white, and close the end and implode. you will get a thick clear cap that way.

ps. we all know you can rock i/o prodo

Not quite sure what a cab is? Still, from what you say, maybe you need the big tube fast-tack?

Take pretty much any tube and blow a bubble maybe twice the size (at the bubble's widest point) of the pattern you're trying to sink, probably with a thickish wall.

Melt that bubble flat like you're intending to make it into a tube implosion. Since you want to facet it (?) you're going to want it to be a little thick, say 7mm. Strive to keep it really even, not too center-bulged.

Now the hard part: get that clear disk mad hot and your pattern almost as mad hot; when it all looks good and before anything slumps WHAM tack it FAST to the clear disk. EDIT: make sure that the pattern you're trying to tack is slightly convex, otherwise you're headed for air-trap city, a city of misery.

Now pull off like any tube implosion, pull off the clear from the edges until you're right next to the beginning of the color of your pattern, and proceed from there with your gig.

Again, I'm not positive that I understand your post, so please take it with a grain of salt and sorry if I'm confusing things.

If you succeed, post some pics so we can know what the hell you're talking about :)

sounds like you need to go see it done in person. it would be very difficult to explain the exact heat gradiants that you're asking about in writing. Time for a weekend in colorado. A round trip flight from SLC to Denver is often less than 200 bucks.

Fuck as in "FUCKING FUCK, USELESS MOTHER FUCKERS!!!!! WHY DON"T YOU KNOW EVERYTHING!!!!"

It's a new day, I have a new game plan.

I've been bringing the clear to the bubble and I think this is backward, today I'm bringing the bubble to the clear; produce clear puck cab, bring to bubble, trash cut, wipe edges, reshape and crisp up cab, continue on with project.

The Bigles

yea, the clear is the majority of the weight in this step. I'd say the larger mass usually receives the focus of attention. (you add something small to something larger, not the other way around)

Okay, you bastards. I know you all have the answers.

This is a cab. Shorter version of the word cabochon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabochon).
http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp258/HWCGlass/DSCN5584.jpg

You can see that it is a flat backed domed thing. This one is a carving prep, there is a color pattern inside.
http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp258/HWCGlass/DSCN5585.jpg

Here is a faceted honeycomb cab with a hole in it, making it a pendant.
http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp258/HWCGlass/DSCN5588.jpg

These pendants have had a cab sunk into a cookie foot like frame. There is a picked bail on the back.
http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp258/HWCGlass/DSCN5589.jpg

http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp258/HWCGlass/DSCN5591.jpg

The goal is to make this physical design with a different style.

This is the kind of prep I am using, this is a simple kind, a piece of scrap-ish.
http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp258/HWCGlass/DSCN5586.jpg

This is the kind of bead I make with this kind of prep.
http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp258/HWCGlass/DSCN5593.jpg

So, a clear cab with the zanfirico on the back.

I have a new plan of attack, been on paperwork all day so far, be trying out this procedure:

1) Make clear cab, handle on domed face, flat back nicely flame polished.

2) Produce prep, blow into ball of sufficient size at to accept flat face of cab, blown to more of a squat shape, domed in the front.

3) Preheat ball and cab, push cab back into ball prep.

4) flame cut prep off of cab, wipe edges clean. dress cab.

5) execute remainder of project.

Thoughts?

Sounds good, but keep the tube thing in mind; it may offer better control over the thickness of the clear, and might distort less. FWIW.

Take tube n lube it up real good , like cover the tip it will feel better when your rotating the shaft back n forth.. then take that honeycomb n heat it up in the hot box that should be heating your tube as we speak,, and slide it in between the lips of your hot box,, you know the glory hole , now move it around till its nice n juicy , now holding your tube firmly pull it out of the hot hole and plunge it into the brown eye. I mean clear lens that you were keeping hot with your other hand or mouth or whatever . Now just move it n grove it till it all sloppy n wet lookin then slap that ass in a few times for good measure ,,, eat sandwiches n wait 9 mo

hrs till that babys cooked and you will have a masterful piece you can put up for adoption or feed wheat grass for the rest of its life , either way I'm sure you will love it cuz it will come from your sack which contains your soul.....
