So the trick goes you take a copper penny and drop it into a solution of sodium hydroxide (serious base) along with zinc powder laying in the bottom of the beaker. The copper will react in a few minutes coating the penny "silver" (really zinc)...Then you remove the penny with tweezers and wash it in water....Then you can put the penny over a flame and the copper will react with the zinc and turn your penny "Gold" (really bronze)....I saw some really cool copper coins with ships on them and would like to make a few silver and gold coins for my uncles beach house...It would kinda look like sunken treasure! Where can I find a realiable web site that sells zinc powder? Thanks for the leads.:o:

I don't know of a seller, but that sounds pretty cool! Good luck. I'd love to see pics of what you end up with.

You can also expose the zinc on the inside of a newer penny by sanding a couple of the edges. I'm pretty sure it will plate itself, as well as any penny you touch to the zinc that gets plated on. Batteries are weird!
