View Full Version : Pets in your shop

I just acquired the dog I have always wanted, English bull terrier. Working along gets kinda boring sometimes even with Netflix. My question is would she be ok hanging out while I'm working? She won't be in the shop if I'm working large pieces (don't want her to get in the way and get hurt) but if I'm doing basic prep, pendants and such will her eyes be ok? I sweep everyday so there is little to no scrap glass on my floor.
Do any of you have your pets in the shop from time to time?

When my shop was at home in my garage I always let my Lab in. He was more interested in laying down at the open garage door and watching the world go by than looking at the flame. In fact, I don't ever think I caught him looking at the flame.
The shop I work at now, we sometimes bring our dogs, but not as much.
And I've never had an animal get glass in a paw. Ymmv.

My golden has been in the shop since he was a puppy and he's 8 now. I take him with me to the University every day and he sits right next to me while I blow glass all day. Then we go home and hits he hangs out at my shop at home while I blow glass. He is 8 years old and has never been cut or burned (knock on wood). He does like to get in the way but that's ok, I've learned to work around him.

Some people do it.
I get annoyed as fuck tripping over dogs when I visit my friend's shop.
I also despise hearing a dog's bark, especially when I'm focused on a piece or stacking sections, lining up terminations.
I guess I'm just not a dog person.

my buddy has a dog who has grown up around junkyards, mechanics, biodiesel processing and glass shops her entire life and she has learned the proper way to hang around without getting hurt. when sheba walks up to a shop she looks at him first for instructions then he tells her where to sit or picks her up and puts her in a chair/couch/etc. she is so well behaved that she will look at him first before she needs to go out to make sure shes ok. i swear there is some form of telepathy goin on between them. i do not condone letting your dog hang around unless your shop is well ventilated obviously.

there is a dog in the shop i work for sometimes, she rocks and she never gets in the way at. At my home studio i have let the dog hang out, but she gets bored over anything.

I tell my dogs to stay out, but Sometimes they come and lay right in the doorway, so I cant really get mad at that. I mostly don't want them to get a bunch of glass/dust in their hair and bring it in the house. It's kinda nice when your dogs got yer back when you are turned around focused on something though.

Does her eyebrow spot always make her look like she's thinking "What's up? What's goin on? Where's the bacon?"

I'd say keep pets away from the bench for their safety, a piece of flying hot glass would be bad for an animal obviously, but aside from that, any dust on the floor is guaranteed to get inhaled by a pet, especially a dog as they seem to make it a mission in life to constantly snort the ground. Can't imagine glass dust (or kiln dust) being any healthier for a dog than human.
As long as the pet is kept at a safe distance from the work area, I can't see having the company being anything but good.

You are so lucky! I love bull terriers - they are great dogs. Have fun with her! I don't think a well-behaved dog would be a problem. My dogs, however, do have manners, they are just all bad. :) I keep my dogs and cats out.

I was going to sadly point out most glass people i know with dogs don't really mind them sniffing around, due to the concern with the breathable stuff is over a long period of time and well unfortunately they will pass long before these things could ever become an issue.
so fuck it let em sniff the shit out of everything they love it

I cant keep my cat from drinking from my water can. I dont think it will hurt unless the obvious shard gets him , I dont put anything but boro glass in it also so no nasty shit in the water. I drink from glasses , doesnt hurt me.
I use a plastic mixing bowl for my can w a rod on top for tinkin off
Do you guys think it will?

I wouldn't drink from an open cup in the shop. I use a water bottle. I'm pretty paranoid about glass dust getting in to an open cup.

just get a perk pot and use that... has a lid and you can drain it to get the glass bits out a little easier...

I have a great dane that practically lives in my studio. Due to his size and having a small studio he gets in the way at times. he has been hit with a molten gob of glass, no major burns just some singed hair. It didnt seem to bother him much.

Damn, I do all my scoring and breaking over my water , and you'd be surprised at how much glass dust collects in there. My dude said he had a cat that would try to sit right on the bench, as close as possible to the flame...my dogs stay by the doorway.

Lexi - 1 month old doberman pinscher
She's grown a lot since that picture was taken. She's 8 months old now, and full of so much energy. She's my first dog I've raised on my own. And I have to say, it's a challenge. But she's very kind hearted and friendly.
I plan on making her a little doggy door in my shed and putting a couch in there for her to sleep on.

my dog likes to be within 20 feet from me at all times. I have a loud CC and he doesnt like it too much but he always is in the shop layin on the floor lookin out. I like it because I always know when someone shows up. he either barks or wags his tail if he likes you. he is 13 now. I've had him since he was born. he's been in many shops over the years and no problems

My girl is a great doorbell. She's barks ferociously when people are at the door, so I don't have to worry about people being in the shop without me noticing (the front door is a ways down from the work stations, so I don't always hear people coming in when I'm concentrating on my work). She also has her own line of prodo with a very distinctive style to earn her keep ... She says props to Pogo for the inspiration in shaping! She's a good girl :)
