I get all my camera/security gear at supercircuits.com

They have some really high end stuff and a lot of lower end. For about $500 you can get a professional grade security DVR, 2 or 3 cameras with good lenses, and the cable you need to connect them all.

Costs more, but the quality is there. A GOOD camera/lens combo is $100 minimum... pick a lens based on application.

I have an 8 camera setup that records 24/7 w/ night vision. I can even access it over the web on an iphone or at someones house. It's also useful when someone shows up, you can tell who's at your door. I paid a bit, but not a crazy amount. You can get 1 or 2 cams really cheap.

i have a 4 camera set up , and a remote flash drive in a fire safe that buffers for 72 hours.

honestly besides maintiance these systems once set up with decent stuff just run for ages.... and cheaper then having adt in every time you need to make a change. so its a good investment.

but you still need to think in layers. while cameras are nice , tank cages , good strong doors and decent locks are a good first string of defence. also barred windows etc. then security system , then cameras past that its up to you.

im about to upgrade my cameras soon. also i think you should go with wired. i have had too much troubled with wireless in general. and only go wireless if its an insanely long run.

Wireless can also be seen by pretty much with very simple equipment, sometimes baby monitors pick up the signal of wireless cams and vice versa.

I want to know why the price hasn't come down much on the standalone wireless cameras that are IP addressable. The ones that feed to a central location are nice, but it seems like it would be more robust to have it all capture and FTP up to a remote location rather than worrying about an onsite drive or tape bay. Of course if you're a grade above tweaker you might think to cut the phone lines before you break into someplace, but that's me.

I sell these systems at my day job. don't waste your time with wireless cameras. they aren't really wireless, as they need local power, meaning wall wart power adapters. not very secure. and I tell people all the time that surveillance systems are one of those cases where you really do get what you pay for. A decent system with good cameras start around $1500. you can get an in-wall DVR with networking that looks like a circuit breaker box starting at $400, so most thieves won't be smart enough to steal it.
