View Full Version : How to....Dishes

Im trying to make some dishes, dabber dishes, oil trays whatever you wanna call em.
lets say I want to make a 2" dish. Are you guys using large tubing and just rounding it off and cutting or can I make a thick 2" dish with some 38H that I usually keep in the shop?
I have tried to flare a dish out starting with a short piece of 38H but im not getting the same affect I see in other dishes. Maybe this is what ill use that 50x5 for.......:twitch:
i like to use 32mm or smaller. puff it just a bit for whatever shape im looking for, flatten the bottom, punty to the bottom and cut the tube off and flare your dish out.

but dont those come out pretty thin jbob?
My customers are asking for dishes and I made some in the way that u described, actually used 32 heavy too and it wasnt what they were looking for. Then again I think the difference is in the puff. Most of mine so far I close the tube, then flatten without puffing. They complained that the bottom of the dish was still small (32 size) and they wanted the whole dish basically flat with raised edges.
thanks for the input. Ill try it out later today.

I like to use 38 mm, about 3-4 in. I heat and gather the whole pc of tube. Puff it out, hold it up at a 45 angle while blowing to get a squat oval shape. Heat bottom, and flatten, attach pundty. Flame cut close to handel, but up near the neck of the tube. Blow out thin bubble and stretch as you blo, flame. Cut , pick open. Heat the walls and flare. Shape lip .
ide use pretty much the same process for a flatter one with small edges...ive done a few like that, some successfully some not.
good luck

There's a thread how to make a disk and riley did an excellent job breaking it down

its all about setting up ur dish shape before you start adding work. blow out a clear bubble on 32 or something (most everything i have made is on 25 or 32 so far), and then work onto ur blown out bubble of clear. This leaves you a bigger base line for the flattening and eventually the flair. I flatten sideways while in the flame, i have seen others do it on a graphite pad

I never understood the whole dish thing. I guess they got big with the medical scene, but they seem like a smoking delicacy to me. No offense to anyone, I just didn't know wtf they were for at first.

its nice to have a clean surface even if you are not using oils, to use a a sm tray. Or to rest your dabber or whatever you are using to dab so mass shit doesn't get stuck to it.
They are really fun to make, and I have moved on to making larger bowls and dishes after messing around with them. I like to make mine fairly large compared to what I've seen, so people who aren't into the oil thing could use as a tray, or maybe a spoon holder like you see on peoples stoves sometimes, or just as decoration.
I'll admit when I first saw them I didn't really understand either but they are now one of my fav things to make.

I see. How long have they been around. Are they so popular that an acrylic version might catch on?

^^^^^ Ya, so you better go buy an acrylic molding setup, and forget about glass all together. Those guys are at acrylictalk.com

I love making dishes!
I coilpot color on to a 12mm blow tube (If I don't have the color tube), melt it in and blow in to a bubble. Sometimes I'll honeycomb at this step. Condense, flatten the bottom. Then punty to the bottom, rip off the blow tube, flare the lip and thicken the lip up. Make a place to rest a dabber or two. Done.

alright bro... ive kept my mouth shut with a lot of your posts, you seem pretty harmless... But i have some issues with this here... Are you on this forum to learn and contribute glass blowing knowledge, or are you just trying to pick our brains for useful info on our industry, and mass produce some bs from china? This is a glass forum, not a acrylic injection mold hobbie enthusiast site.
kick rocks.

i dont like dabber rests, they take away from the nice lip. i dont use dabber rests too, so that may be part of it.

The only reason i use a dish is to easily heat up the remains in the dish and it all collects at the bottom, can heat acrylic.
I make dishes on 19mm heavy wall and coil pot color or put a reversal like said above , kinda fun to make

Fuck yeah, acrylic dishes would be hot shit. It's not like anyone could just go buy all they wanted at Target or a dollar store, either! Get right on that!

You guys should check out my new nails....
Quartz and Titanium are both harder than boro and so they can chip your glass.
My new nails are lead, so they're not as hard as boro and will not break your stem.

those sound great...i will take a 10 pack of your new found lead nails...any way you could have these lead nails shaped so i they could be used as a dabber as well?

the new nail should be tungsten, if anything.
Nah man lead is way softer, lead or brass. Brass gets you fucked up way more that titanium does. Now throw an acrylic dabber in there and you are set.

Might as well just quit screwing around and fume with plutonium.
huh, found this looking for plutonium glass (to see what color the fuming would be) : http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:EDmvdikQT1EJ:www.princeton.edu/sgs/publications/sgs/pdf/7_3macfarlane.pdf
Synroc is more chemically durable than borosilicate glass and can dissolvemore depleted uranium than glasses to address future criticality problems.
Does that mean they've been using borosilicate glass to 'dissolve' depleted uranium? Like, the military has 8 million tons of u glass laying around in storage somewhere?
Oh wait,
Borosilicate glass, as opposed to other compositions such as phosphateglass, is preferred for high-level nuclear waste.
That probably looks sick under a blacklight.

thanks for all the great responses guys. I havent tried these yet as ive been a little busy with my dying mother and subsequent family visits from all over the country. I think I just need to work on the flare part a little more. I made myself a real long counter weighted punty that ill use to flare these out. Im outta oxy for for the time being but as soon as I get some, ill try it.
Sorry for not finding ryley's thread, I searched "dish, trays,....." and didnt find it.

Sorry to hear about that, Moltenman.
I was looking for the thread mentioned too, and I think I remember seeing it a while back, but haven't located it either.
As far as dishes in general, I love that this sort of form has caught on. The sort of shaping required to get the top part even is more like making bowls, wine glasses or vases than most of the pipe type techniques.

ok well i searched up steak, his thread is on how to make DISC's not dishes. some of the same skills and techniques may apply but thats why i didnt find it when i searched for dishes

That's the thing, a dish is essentially a disc with a big lip on it.
From my perspective, it's like great! Just need to make a giant tube implosion, take off the tube, don't finishing melting it round and don't make a loop. It's a simple form with lots of possibilities.
