On a random googling to check the status of Slinger's Degenerate Art film I stumbled upon this and had my concept of DA turned upside down:

Degenerate Art Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degenerate_art)

I believe that was the inspiration behind the "Degenerate Art Show" at the gallery in Portland during the G. A. S. conference a few years ago.

My aunt just told me this tonight!

I was attempting to explain the Degenerate Art movement because I always caught a snark from her whenever I mentioned the name. Then she tells me "You know, 'Degenerate Art' is what the Nazis had labeled all modern art but this movement may be so young they might not know that the term has been used before." (or something to that affect)

Of course I realized that must have been the origin of the name, which gave me a new ground to stand on... Quickly explaining that is probably the point, that this artistic group is being oppressed - then threw her a brief summary of Operation Pipe Dreams and how it's still fresh on many pipe-maker's minds. The response to the Degenerate Art allusion was "Well, maybe." The reaction to Pipe Dreams was "Well that was then and this is now".

She's still not as bad about it as she used to be and I learned something; whether or not I would have found out about it a few hours later, haha

Yep, Hitler was a big art buff. Anything abstract was considered "degenerate" to him. They collected all the art in the country, he would praise all the normal landcape, portrait paintings, statues and architectural paintings(landscapes and architecture being his favorites) and condemn all the abstract "degenerate Jew art". He even had the "degenerate art" put on display for a while at the Berlin Art museum for a while as a part of his campaign to further dehumanize the Jews before all that art was destroyed. One of the first things he did after the conquering of Paris was scoop up the art there for his personal collection.

Yessir, Hitler had the biggest collection in the world of boring plain old landscapes and architecture. You'll notice that most of today's politicians and corporate CEO's have the same tastes.

There's a documentary on Netflix that focuses on Hitlers hoarding and dictating of art in the Third Reich, with video footage of the "Degenerate Art Gallery" (this is exactly what it was called) Some of that lost art was indeed very cool stuff.

that's pretty bold on slingers part, very fitting.

It's don't think it's so bold on his part.

That will be misunderstood.

It's who he is and he trusts it, even if he is unsure at times.

I told y'all I have the most inspirational conversations with him, even if they seem impersonal at first.

I don't meet many people that make me so curious and want to take the time to take in what they are doing.

It's not bold, he believes he knows what's up and believes in what we do and what he does. And he is right.

It's an amazing testament that so many of us already appreciate and anticipate what he is doing. Years from now, his documentation will become part of the accepted truth and one more "bible" fir what we do. It will be a point of significance in what is noted as the history of lampworking for future generations.

I hear yeah, I suppose bold wasn't close to the right word, I understand the films importance. There's so much to this world, and am so honored to have come across it and this site, I'm real new and forget sometimes.

Did Slinger coin the "degenerate' term? I thought it was in use earlier, saw it on stickers years ago.

after spending the last week a few torch stations away from slinger and having many conversastions , i have come to the conclusion that he is as serious about this craft as anyone i have ever heard.
he speaks with total conviction about glassblowing and also has madd skills to back up his words and thoughts.
i will bet money this film will flat out knock our socks off when it comes out later this year which is also when the projected time i was told it will make its debut.
i cant wait to see it, especially after getting alot more personal insight from the man himself.
p.s. i cant wait to show you my baller oldschool slinger piece i brought back from agi.

i dont know why it would turn your concept of it upside down. nor do i think it is bold. i do, however think it is fitting and profound and i have much respect for both the concept of it, and the work behind it. The amount of time and money already invested into it is astonishing and i believe the finished product will be well worth all of the effort put in to it.

but why would finding out the meaning of degenerate art turn your concept of it upside down?
