I making a cake topper for a wedding their colors are black (easy enough) and watermelon. To make the watermelon I took Uber Blush and coated it with Exotic Citrus looks great.
Twice now I had the piece assemble and in the kiln soaking for 15 min why I made the foot. When I went to get the piece it was shattered in a million pieces. We ended up coming up with a different idea for there wedding but this is bugging me. My thought is that the uber blush is expanding or cooling faster then the clear(base) and the Exotic Citrus(top coat). Anybody got an idea?

I threw the remains out in anger. So can't post pics of what broke. I do have the flutes which are a smaller version. How do I post pics on here?

I'd suggest doing a few compatibility tests, if you're interested in finding out. Uber Blush is a borostix color, right?

You're saying it exploded while in the kiln? That would be some pretty serious incompatibility. I suspect we'd probably have heard about other people cursing this color to hell and a third if it was that bad.

Did you work the borostix stick a bit before coating it, to turn it into normal glass instead of sintered slag, or did you just heat it hot and go from there?

As far as posting pics, you can either upload it as an attachment (towards the bottom of the advanced posting form) or upload it somewhere like http://imgur.com and then put it in here with an [img] tag. Imgur makes it really easy, actually - they give you something you can cut and paste specifically for this type of forum. If you don't get it to work, one of us can probably provide more details.

You might try mixing the UB with a little clear to make it a little more transitional in nature. If it's a COE issue, that might help you a bit. Because the origin sticks are made in a different way they don't always play nicely out of the box.

Remix the boro stix first. Though I don't know if thats your issue. I don't ever have any compatibility issues when I don't remix, just loss of color.

Maybe try mixing the uber blush with the exotic citrus. Or fume citrus with heavy gold, add a little white and then mix.

You can make all kinds of pinks with gold fume.

Also, check the borostix for kiln wash, sometimes they lift up some crud from the sintering process and if it gets mixed in will wreak havoc.

I just got a new bundle of uber blush and it feels different, not fused as much (rigid sharp square profile instead of smoothed over) so I am wondering if they changed their process a bit. I haven't melted any yet... will do so soon tho.

I have a variety of shapes. I am not sure it's a change in the process so much as the kiln running hotter from one day to the next. I don't see any difference in workabilty.

I forgot about that. I lost a fair amount of stuff using some glow that may have had some crap attached to it. I got better results after I scrubbed it and started preheating it on the edge of the kiln.
