I have been tasting & breathing in some weird stuff from my blowhose so i need to figure out a better way to work. I made a valve with glass and water that enabled me to have a one way valve on the part I breathe into and also have the work vented so it doesn't implode. This bubbler thing worked but the ball didn't seat well so I would have to manually close the vent to blow into the work. This is kinda hard thing to explain but anyone else have this problem and find a valve or some kind of device that works to do this? Seems like there must be something out there like a fitting from mc master carr that would work better then a weird bubbler attached to my bench. Here is a pic of what I made.

I normally have my blow hoses to both tailsttock and headstock. I have a T split in front of me attached under the lathe. Each hose a valve to control open/close. This way if I ever need it I have air on both sides. I can close off either side or use both. In your situation, so I don't get any blow back I normally keep both sides open and I either bite the hose or plug with my tongue so nothing is injected into my lungs. If I do a side arm and need better air pressure I close tail side and have direct air.

What we used to do is put a cigarette filter in the line. When you suck back or just get stuff off the glass it will filter it before it gets to your mouth. I don’t know if this will work for you but it might be worth a try.

nothing to contribute...

just wanted to say that's a nice looking rig

you could try a plastic inline moisture filter for air lines. No valve needed

I like the weird bubbler. Is that a smokestack?

at the pet store they have one way valves made out of plastic with a rubber flapper. Should solve your problem for less than $2. They are usually designed to go into fish tank air line but I bet it wouldnt be to hard to make it fit your current blow hose. and then put a T inline on the glass side of the check valve, then another check valve in the opposite direction so the work can suck air in when it needs to, but you can blow air into it without losing pressure.

1+++ on nice rig!!!

yeah, that's a cool rig, and i've always been keeping my eye out for a solution myself.. if this thread yields more results.. please let us know!

a series of one way valves won't work, I wish it would. Filters are a good idea but its fumes coming back through the hose not particles. The point is that the glass can not have a vacuum happening.

I like the petco valve but it only accomplishes half of the task. Maybe I could put a small pinhole in the hose between the valve and the glass and always have a small leak in the hose that would let the work vent but not enough so I could still get some good pressure when I need it. I'm going to pick one up and give it a try. thanks.

The bubbles thing works alright but when I put lots of pressure into it, maybe 5% of the time the ping pong ball doesn't totally seal and water comes out the smokestack on the top. I can live with the water everywhere but the 5% I need full pressure I usually have my hands full and having an extra finger to block the vent is a pain. I'll keep you all posted & thanks

julian, kind of a smokestack, the tubes are so tall so the hoses don't get tangled on other things on the bench.

take liquid latex and do a seal for the ballcock valve.

hose from a single end of Y but one straight the other off at angle with an inward spike as ballcock guide so when you blow into hose it moves ballcock into the angled arm and against a seal , when released it seats down to a seal leading to the hose and rests low enuf as to have airflow to outside.

Good luck

and the wigwags... don't forget the wigwags

Props to being aware of the funk... I think you are on the right track with a valve. Any type of filter device will just filter, and not totally eliminate any gases(I don't think). Putting a small vent hole should work I believe, I do production with a footpump that has a hole poked in the line so there is no vacuum and it still delivers pressure. Manually blowing should be no issue with a small hole. Hope you figure it out and report back the results.

fill one of those inline valves with activated charcoal maybe?

at first I thought the footpump idea was nuts but I slept on it. I bought one yesterday ($12) and now I think its brilliant. It works so well I think everyone should use one. No more holding the hose between your teeth and getting a sore jaw. I can talk to people easier now while I am working, its great. It took an hour or so to get used to it but after I put a zip tie to limit the amount of travel on it and put a small cut in the hose right by the swivel its perfect. thanks allstyles, did you come up with this or see it somewhere?

Yeah, I came up with it about 5 or 6 years ago when I was doing a lot of inside out frit. I was getting a lot of funk in my mouth so I switched to a blowhose which was still nasty to me. Hooked up the footpump and it worked great! Tried to get many people to adopt it, nobody in my shop seemed interested in trying it. I have since got all 3 of us in my new shop using one, and as you know once you actually give it a try its aces.

Stoked you tried it and liked it, stirred up quite a controversy here on the forum when I tried to turn people on to it. You using a Bell metal foot pump or something else?

If other people show interest I will do a short tutorial on how I have mine setup.

its been a little work to get the vent hole just right but I think i have it dialed in now. thanks, its a really good trick! I don't know the manufacturer of the pump but it was off the shelf at a smaller hardware store. $12

Its a different brand pump then I use but looks pretty much the same... Your using it on a lathe? Always wondered how it work with a lathe worker.
