Hey guys! My names nick and I'm fairly new to melting glass. I took one class at diablo glass school in mission hill ( boston ma ) and from there on out I was hooked. In the class I learned basic things such as terminology and basic vessel work, and making marbles. Since then I have purchased a Nortel Midrange Plus with Surface mix Topfire.....and since then im addicted to sweating my heart out behind it. :D I've been getting a few hours if not more a day on the torch for the past month or two. And before that I was dabbling for atleast 20 hours a week altogether.

Here are some things I have been working on. If anyone is in Massachuchusetts and wants to do some work together let me know! I'd love to meet fellow glass addicts as none of my close friends truely appreciate the craftmanship and dedication behind the marble in their hands/bowl/tube ya digg?

I will take all criticism as positive reinforcement. I'm only looking to get better.
Thanks for checking out my thread and hope you enjoy my work!!!!

Im super proud of this marble because of the implosion and design on the exterior. Its my favorite to date.

These are both from the same tubing. Notice how the bowl doesnt have the color striked? I wish it did would have looked alot nicer! haha But I love the 18mm slide. super chunky!!

That marble is pretty! Good move getting the professional photos, they look really good.

The pipes are pretty weird of course, but I figure you're working on it. I'd suggest working with clear for a while until you get the hand of melting stuff in and simple shaping.

Some various marbles and paperweights that i believe have a space/universe/planet look to them. I honestly can't say they ended up looking like this because its the image that started off in my head. Its more like me learning/playing behind the torch.

Yes im very aware of my pipes looking a bit Janky. haha. But I have been working on making simpler form pipes trying to get the bowl hole, and push down to where im comfortable with it on the regular. Ive even been trying to do mini pendant type styles as so for practice.

I'd love to get acquainted with some fellow mass residents to learn from or either work with, I dont know anyone who's really into glass so much they produce it.

your first pipe looks allot like mine. I wasnt supposed to be on the torch and was sneaking in some time at 3 in the morning. Had no clue what I was doing pulled it out my ass. Wish I had it to look at, makes me smile to think about it. Chillum style and it was useable but ugly as sin lol.

First time I'm seeing this, don't take affence because none is intended... only helpful thing I'd say is take a step back, pick up some clear and save the nice coloured stuff till you get it down with the clear.

I mean to say you got some neat ideas with bends and attachments and you can see where you want to be but your basic concepts aren't straightened out yet. Just practice on clear for a while, I would have said.

frillcappa
11-06-2011, 06:44 PM
I agree with swampy. you gata get some good fundamentals before u start being able to make practical large pieces. good start but it's gana get expensive fast practicing on premade tubes. on the wrap n rakes use a thinner wrap and then a fatter hot rake and everything should flatten out a bit. just an observation from experience. take a step back and get some basics and it will be a ton more fun in a year or 2 when u can actually make what you invision. good luck in your glass adventures!

Hey thanks for the words of wisdom guys!

And yes that tubing and absolutely purchased haha. I could def not pull lined tubing like that myself, I can only dream... Haha.

I am practicing Alot with clear. I just bought a few lined tubes for shits and giggles to make a few pieces for friends and myself, I've very aware of my lack of ability to bend tubing 100% of the time, however I'm still going to push myself to make things I feel are slightly above my level. ( gotta push myself )

Sadly those were not all the pictures I had to show! My computer crashed so it'll be a few more days till I'm posting more pictures.

As always thanks for looking and contributing to this journey I'm so happy to be embarking on.

Push your self by learning how to make a spoon, not wasting your time making super jank stuff wayyy out of your skill set. If your serious about glass get you basics down first, you'll be happy you did.

Just updating to let eryone know ive been working STRICTLY clear. And only completing spoons and have only made a few marbles. Really excited to get some pictures taken to show where I'm at. The push and shaping of the bowl has been coming out much more uniform!!

Sadly I havent touched my computer because im having too much fun behind the torch; and I have family visiting from WV that I havent seen in quite time.

Hope everythings going great in the melting for everyone else!

^^^^ Some good advice from the above. I know color is fun but it can get really expensive. Save your cash on the color and invest in some tools, more clear or a class. A good marvering pad or paddle is hard to beat! My shaping made some big leaps just by getting a torch mounted marver and necking tool. It really evened out my shapes.
Nice work on starting to throw some maria's into your pieces. Looks like your starting to understand heating a little better and giving some inward pressure to add shape. On the wrap and rakes, Frillacappa said it, more heat on the rake and a thinner stringer of color for the wrap. Maybe just try some clear with silver fume W'n'R, it has a nice effect, and you can do them over and over and not break the bank.
Also nice attempt on the flower/4 hole slide, don't see that often from a beginner. Keep at it!

who is sherb? never heard the name before. but im not exactly in with any glass workers around this area as im fairly new to the game.

id like to think the other stuff is original though!

hopefully ill have some more pictures to post up soon. In the meantime im going to look for fuming tuts because thats a tech i seriously need to learn. if anyone wants to give me some pointers, or has a video of them doing fuming id love to see it!

thanks for looking guys!

No problem, that thread is great. I've spent a lot of time trying to get better at it.

Your colors look much better than mine, but your shaping could be better. Working even more basic clear/fumed spoons will really help you, trust me. I dont feel very comfortable with color at all, but shaping a spoon is now the simpler parts of the process. Using the right amount of fume can really give a simple piece a nice look without much material cost. Working the clear really lets you see the glass and what happened. Oh, and less is almost always more with silver fuming as well.

Make a blank, fume it, lay clear lines and/or dots onto blank, melt in, shape, finish piece, and then repeat repeat repeat!!!

Again, your color looks good, marbless too! Just focus on a good shape, rather than colors for a minute.

Yeah ive been making tons of different stuff lately. Ive also been practicing alot with simple spoons ( shaping ) even making purely clear ones.

That millie slide looks fun, someone will love that, and the slime looks great! And the fuming is looking good too, keep it up!! I've found the best way to learn/experiment with fuming is to just lay down clear lines/dots, rather than using color. It really lets you see the differences in how you treat it, and also lets you see all the subtle differences it can take. But like I said, looks good, keep it up!

That slide has some nice looking millies! Your work is progressing right along and your style is not the usual run of the mill prodo. Keep torchin!
