Ok, so I know everybody thinks their kid is the cutest. But my little girl (the picture in my avatar is old, she'a almost two and a half now), took the cake this morning.

We were walking out to the car through the garage. Whenever she sees my workbench, she says, "Daddy, are we gonna blow glass?" (She's one of those kids that started talking WAY too early and now speaks very well). Anyways, this morning when we were walking out, she saw my prepped stuff and said, "Ooooohhh, Daddy, I like that." (She was talking about a dowel wrapped with rods, ready for a tube pull). I asked her, "Baby, do you know what that is?" She excitedly replied, "That's a stick stack, daddy!"

She's my biggest fan. One of her favorite things is to get a new marble from daddy (she doesn't even care if it's unfinished or out of round).

I can't wait till she's old enough to learn to blow. I'm thinkin' that if she starts when she's five, she'll be BAD by the time she's twenty. Now if only my son would start walking...

So, I'm just starting this thread so people can share stories about kids and glass. Share your stories!

my oldest is one of those who spoke too soon. hes four. he watches us on the torch as much as he can with his tiny little attention span. he thinks shane(sol) is the coolest guy ever because he got us into glass. lately, weve been bargaining about when he can start. i say 7, he says 5. "ill behave way better when you let me blow glass, i promise." "i'll be real careful not to burn myself, or the house because if the house burns down, we'll have to live at nunna's and shes always tellin me im gonna have to work when i grow up." he's learning to read now and he wants to know why you have to AIM your kiln to use it.

Shane lives around here now, his little one should be here soon, then we'll have some more stories...

Ahhh, c'mon, what could happen with a five year old and a torch with a flame upward of 5000 degrees? I'd say by five he can do it when you're not home. . .

"ill behave way better when you let me blow glass, i promise."
It's a lie, I tell you!!! A dirty lie!

That thing about the AIM is cute. You should pick a direction and tell him he can't stand there because that's where the kiln is AIMed at.

My daughter just turned 6 and has been begging me to let her make something for the last couple years. I let her make a pendant a couple months ago and I have to say it came out pretty nice for her first one. She did all the color and I helped her shape it.

Whenever she sees my workbench, she says, "Daddy, are we gonna blow glass?" Gracë, my 2 year old isn't quite as talkative as your little one...still - I'll never forget the look on her face when I fired up her Phantom- (yeah, I had one of those "crazy pregnant lady moments I guess.... coz getting my baby a torch was one of the first things I did as soon as I found out I was gonna be a mommy....before I told anyone....even my mommy ) When I took her out to my shop to see me work for the first time I told Gracë that it was hers, and I let her sit on my lap when I fired it up.
She was completely spellbound by the thing - and by what I showed her it could do with the glass,her jaw dropped wide open while she watched me spin out a marble;

Like I said Gracë doesn't talk much yet - she's 2 and had to get tubes in her ears right before the Xmas just past; at her appointment prior to getting the tubes her doctor ran some hearing tests, and the tests concluded that Gracë's hearing was affected by the ear infections - I have been signing with her since birth, not for hearing reasons - it's more like I wanted to teach her a 2nd language; she took to it better coz she couldn't hear us - that's why she isn't talking much yet .

After I finished the marble & turned off the torch Gracë began to clap her hands and bounce around in her daddy's lap......signing "more" and "hot" .....

then her first sentence...."more please...."
and her second "mama more..."

Every week my son can make it through kindergarten he gets a glass lesson... HHe's five now and has been at me abput glassblowing since e got his first pair of shades at three (Thanks Mike Aurelius!!!) Sp now hes made a pendant or two and ....Gasp... Got his first burn. We made a pendant, he smooshed the clos and I did the loop. I out it on the bench to quick cool and he went to watch Yu-Gi-Oh. He came back on a commercial break and daddy told him it was still hot even if it didn't look that way but he had to check himself and got a heat blister on his finger. He's fine but evryone do be safe with the kiddies. His grandmother still isn't speaking to me!!!!

i say its a good thing he got burned... in such a mild matter, some gota get burnt before they know the fire is hot.. now he will know it doesn't have to be glowing to be hot... and im sure it will be a long time before he gets burned again..unless he slips up... but man i just stuck my hand in the flame... can't imagine what that would do to little kiddie fingers... eh it comes with the territory. grandma knew she was going to be in pain when she had you... she desided it was worth it at some point in time. just as anything in life goes.. there are pros and cons to everthing you just have to weigh them out and see whats worth it for you. btw i don't have kids but my mom had her last 3 in her own bed and i helped raise them as i was homeschooled and i gota say these strories made me emo for a split second.
