Put up some photos of blowing glass at a local hot shop, Jim Sage's! It was my first time doing furnace (soft glass) blowing. It was even more fun than I expected. Giant pots full of molten glass are the best. Also in on this furnace session are nafglass, Jes and Dan Paulson.

I'd like to see the finished work too, actually! I made a bunch of weird paperweights and a tumbler. Probably not much to look at though the other guys made some nice stuff.

Link should be okay Boiseno, maybe imgur had a random glitch.

Nice one, Julian! Every time I see pics or footage of people getting down and dirty in the hotshop I miss my hotshop days :(
It's lots of fun and once you start getting any good at it it's a lot like dancing. Getting hotshop experience will also translate straight into your understanding of lampworked glass as well. Any lampworker who has the opportunity to sling around some glass on the end of a pipe should dive right in and do so. I really recommend it!

YES it is up in DULUTH MN at my friend's Sage Forge hot shop. STAR I would like to get that crew of you that works the glass up here for some furnace working, I sent a pm to you, it is a great opportunity...

One of my BIG things I am wanting to do more soon and tried already is to lampwork small components and bring them to the hot shop and incorporate them into larger peices, its so fun and easy to encase things with gathers of CLEAR in the hotshop.

Here is one of my favorite pictures of the day, Jim also can restore Ol cars but wont let me tear around and jump stuff with them. I really cant think of having this outside in the freezing cold snow and rain but he knows his stuff:- )

HAVING FUN

Do yourself a favour and try the following, after realising that picking up small things on a gather and going to the furnace and gathering more clear on top will very easily smudge your small lampworked objects, especially if they have bits sticking out.

Make a gather and embed your objects into that gather. Then case by having your assistant bring you hot gathers (no marvering) on a punty and cover your objects by blobbing the glass on them, hit the glory hole and melt it all in carefully, but only until the edges of your blobs flow into the body, and then go for another gather. You'll find that the likelihood of smudging or deforming your inclusions is much reduced.

YEP, couldnt agree more with you Aussie.
I made this one last winter. My first gather was from the black color crucible, then put the yellow frit on the outside, then the figure placed in the middle, flashed melted in almost flat then a gather of clear then more red frit on the edges.

having a helper to bring hot glass over is great ! Then switching to where I am the helper will help them get more pieces done too...

I was thinking if we get good with the soft glass furnace it could be good practice for the boro-furnace and all the years of boro experience will help their too.

It is so fun to make something big quick !
The more I practice hopefully the better i will get and get more detail. If they get worse and worse the more I practice I will find another project :- )

Yeah, what's up with that imgur glitch? I see that happens on my Android phone too, good to know. Maybe I'll report that to imgur.

Agreed Jes, I'm even more interested in the boro furnace after working with this one.

Hey Star, you all should totally come up for a session some time! It's just outside of Duluth, about 20 minutes. I'm looking forward to for another session.... The glory hole and crucible combo can melt so much glass it makes just about any torch look underpowered. It's fast, too!
