hey i asked this on another forum but i mainly want to use my camera for glass..
i was gifted money towards a digital camera for christmas and im having a hard time settling on one. I really want something in the 130-160 range or so, and a macro function is important as well as decent battery life among other things. I have been doing a bit of research and found a few that were released this year that caught my eye.

Amazon.com: Sony DSCWX9/BBDL 16.2 MP CMOS Sensor with 5 x Optical Zoom Digital Camera Black: Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSCWX9-BBDL-Optical-Digital/dp/B004UAF0NS/ref=sr_1_3?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1324904802&sr=1-3)

this sony is out, but now the WX10 is out as well for 100 more, so is this outdated? i like the sony feature that can help to blue parts of the background on some pictures.

there were a few others but im posting this from my phone. thanks tc! currently have been borrowing a fujifilm finefix xp which works just fine for me, but after looking up some, has poor reviews.

heres another i was considering

Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS 12.1 MP Digital Camera (Black): Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-ELPH-300-HS/dp/B004J41T7Q/ref=zg_bs_330405011_3)

i want to be able to record 1080p as well.

there is just a ton of options, some people pointed me towards lumix as well.

looking to get a camera that was released sometime this year, they seem to come out often so id rather have a newer model. any suggestions or comments are appreciated!

I would avoid Sony. They seem to always use proprietary memory products that are quite a bit more expensive than general products (memory stick versus SD card, etc...).

Canon's are cool because of the Canon Hacker Developer Kit (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK) which is a non-destructive firmware upgrade that you load onto your SD card, and it unlocks all kinds of extra features. If you don't want it anymore, you just delete it from your SD card, and your camera goes back to normal (so it does not void your warranty).

It only works on certain models of Canon's so you have to do a little research before you buy, but it can get you a little bit more bang for your buck, so there is that.

I also like camera's that use AA batteries. It's easy to find rechargeable AA's, they're cheaper than any camera battery, they can be used for other things as well, and if you're out somewhere and your battery dies and you don't have a charger or a freshly charged battery, you can walk into any store and buy some disposable batteries.

For point and shoots I agree with Icarus with Canon for the same reason. When I need a cheap camera I typically just wait until one comes up on woot.com

I can't recommend a specific model, but I've owned 2 Olympus cameras, 1 point and shoot and my current DSLR and have been totally happy with them. We took tons of pics with the P/S and dropped it numerous times and it lasted for years.

really any decent camera you can get pretty good pictures from. $1 spent on a nice backdrop does more than $50 invested into a camera.

I went thru hell and back with this issue. What I've found

I thought I had to have that Cannon rebel with a very xpensive macro lens.

Turns out the Fuji S5700 was not only a shit-ton cheaper ($139) it took just as good as a close up picture as the $2800 Cannon I thought I needed. Couple that with a kick ass light box, back drop and learning what exposure is all about and you've got yourself some nice pictures. DO NOT spend HUGE $$$$$$$, it's a waste unless you love photography ya know? peace and gl!

i am noticing that the more i read up on sony. that canon looks nice there was also another one more in the 230 range i was liking, the s100, but thats a bit more than i was hoping on spending. i have been borrowing a fujifilm xp which got pretty bad reviews but has worked great for me, so im sure anything will be fine, but id rather just make the purchase a wise one. the s5700 is nice but a bit big bodied it looks like. the sony and canon are nice sizes

also i prefer a rechargeable battery myself i think

Lol, really?

Canon, 1st choice.

Nikon, 2nd choice.

You can get a cheap Canon, or if you have an extra $100, there's a great Nikon on sale at most places. I think it's the P-90. My Dad just picked one up for $250.

Takes great pics for being a cheap camera.

i would get an old cannon d-20, d-30, d-40. DSLR used they are about $100-$200 and usually have at least one lens with them. they take great professional quality photos and are cheapish now.

i would not go for a point and shoot you will get better results if you learn how to set up a good shot.

Canon. You will want a good macro camera, even Canon's point and shoots have a nice macro mode. My canon "slr" takes awesome macro shots. Nikon would be my next choice, but I wont ever waste my money on anything lesser.

I have a few point and shoot cybershots, one is a SteadyShot DSC-S980 and the other is a SteadyShot DSC-W290 with the Carl Zeiss glass lens. Both are well over a year old but still take excellent shots. I would rather have a DLSR, but with proper back drops and lighting I can take some pretty nice photos. I use my Carl Zeiss all the time, but if you really need a camera the DSC-S980 just sits there. All it needs is a memory card. And maybe the charger, not too sure where it is. Let me know, I can send it out to ya.

Free camera = money saved to be spent on some Slyme lol.

Sleeping,

You should get that today! I couldn't find the charger, or the AV cable for that matter (never used it, laptop has a card reader) but if I do, I'll send it out to you. Super easy to use camera, excellent macro capabilities. Enjoy!
