so starting at the beginning of march I will be the first flameworker ever to be a resident artist at Penland. I am completely honored, excited and intimidated all at the same time. I will be starting a blog upon arrival and will be a bigger part of this community on the melting pot to keep you guys up to date on what I'm up to. One of the things i really want to happen and work on in those 3 years is documenting the experience. it is truly going to be a life changing experience for me and its the flame community that has helped enable me to get this chance.

Pease contact me, bug me, arrange visits, come hang if you take a class. My studio door is open to all of you, just say the word.

Chris, i will be making pipes. openly? i don't know yet. I have to imagine they know I make pipes, it is no secret and they are all over my website they link to from their site. That being said, when I taught the concentration this fall i came to understand why they have a no pipe policy as far as their classes go. It revolves around insurance liability and state funding. while the people in charge may understand that pipes are a craft object like anything else, to openly make pipes would be putting a ton at risk for the whole organization.

I have a lot of goals and projects I want to tackle during my residency, and none of them involve pipes at this time. The studio and housing are pretty much paid for up there so all I have to pay for is shop overhead. I plan on making pipes 10% of the time to cover those costs at first. One of the amazing opportunities the residency provides is exposure to gallery's, museum curators and collectors that support the residents and the school. I imagine I will have the real chance to sell whatever I want to make, the market is there. I will be focusing on experimentation both in concept and technique and hope to make serious strides in both areas. Pipes are a very small part of my serious body of work, while I have no plans to distance myself from them I have a feeling that might naturally occur due to the nature of the opportunity. I love to design, i am a designer at heart, that is why making pipes is rewarding to me. I am allowed to design and experiment within the pipe and be rewarded financially. now the opportunity to broaden my designs to encompass any subject is in front of me and Im going to grab that opportunity and run!
