View Full Version : Announcing the grand opening of the GLDG Glass Library!

The GLDG Library is now OPEN!!!

I’m so excited to see this project get off the ground! It’s taken a lot of work, and the library isn’t that big, but I’m really hoping to see it grow fast. :bouncy:

Here are some details on how this program will work:

Your approved donation of $25 or more in books/videos gets you a year membership. If you’d like a membership but don’t have books or videos to donate, you can make a monetary donation of only $25 a year. 100% of that money goes back into the GLDG Library by supplying the library with new material and if needed, shipping supplies. More materials will be available for check out the sooner you sign up! ;)

To start your membership now, go under your User CP on the top tool bar. Down on the bottom of the left hand column click on paid subscriptions. Here you will have the opportunity to join the program via pay pal for a $25 donation. You may also join by check or money order, please PM me with glass library in the subject line for an address.

The forum software will keep track of library cards for us. If you are currently a member, go to the paid subscriptions in your user cp and it will show you the expiration date of your library card. Doesn’t that rock! :guitar:

Once you have your membership you may peruse the available material under Glass Library located on the right of the top tool bar. The available materials are separated into the following categories: Books, VHS Videos & DVDs. If the item you are interested in is available you will see a check on the In box, then you simply click Add to Cart to check that item out and pay for shipping. Shipping will vary depending on weight of item. (Please note: the way pay pal works, it won’t show as “shipping” but that is what you are being charged for. I tried doing it by shipping but there were some bugs, like not being able to charge zero to check out the items, and then the system adding shipping to donations! :twitch: …so this was the best solution for now.)

The material will be sent to you and you may keep it for up to two weeks and then return it. At this time you may only check out one item at a time. This will change once more materials are available, and maybe I’ll find a solution for a prepaid return shipping system too, but I couldn’t work one in yet.

There is no limit to how many items you can check out over the year! So comparing this to those rental sites out there, you are going to get a much bigger bang for your buck, and help this program grow so that you have more to chose from! It’s a great set up if you ask me! :D

Start your membership now and take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity to better yourself and your glasswork! <-- Sara said that, she helped with the post! Isn’t she cute! :D

If you damage or lose library items you will be asked to replace them. If you chose not to replace them, well what can I really do but deny you membership to the library. We have a great group of people here so I didn’t put any time or focus on trying to cover for that, I’m just hoping it won’t ever be a problem.:)

Thanks to those who have donated so far, and to the staff who helped me get this off the ground!

PS - The library link can only be seen when you are logged in, and is only available on the blue skin for now.

Now that you have all the details regarding the GLDG Library we need something from you to gear it to your interests. This thread will double as a wish list for the new library. When you see books/vids/dvds that you are interested in post the name of the book and author so we know what to get with the donations!

Have fun with your new reading materials!

Hi Misha!
Looks like an awesome project-
I have a quick question...can I donate DVD's made off of TV programs?
I got some featuring Lucio, Dante Marioni and some Japanese soft and hard glassworkers......the programs are in Japanese(Kinda like Iron Chef but for glass)

I'm not sure if that would be legal or not? If I find out I'll let you know, and thanks for the offer! :D

hey cristi, did you just say you donated to the library? I got an email for a donation but it appeard to be a forum donation, not a subscription to the library. I can add you manually if that's what you intended the cash for, just let me know! and thanks! :D

I'm going to suggest we get the Milon Making and Marketing. I think it has a lot of good info on both ends and I know I'm not willing to give my copy up!

Looks like that one may be a bit hard to find... (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0970893906/qid=1139033347/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-7860619-7858315?s=books&v=glance&n=283155)

PyroChixRock
02-03-2006, 11:10 PM
Cristi, it rocks. I'd say check it out since you're a library member, but it's very worth buying. :D

PyroChixRock
02-03-2006, 11:12 PM
Hey Sara, i've found that book at a few other places. I'm going to shop around and try to get it under $50.

EDIT: hey check this out (http://www.arrowsprings.com/html/books.html)

Should we get the 2 in one, or just the one for $18?

somberbear
02-03-2006, 11:35 PM
the one with advanced flame working and making and marketing are both great books for the library... i say get the combo and save some cash...

as well theres some cheap videos from generations glass or we can find others cheap and see where we are going from there...

zgeniez
02-04-2006, 12:20 AM
just go straight to the source, click on books:

http://www.thebluemoonpress.com/

you only save $3 with the combo. I say get them separate. It would add to the # of options, plus allot of people aren't ready to worry about selling. Why tie up two books at once if they both won't be read. This was one of my first books. There is so much useful info in those pictures for someone who has never seen another on the torch. I think it's a great intermediate book. Email Milon...maybe he could cut us a deal. :contempla zac

somberbear
02-04-2006, 12:22 AM
the combo is two seperate books... savings of 3 dollors is better then nothing.. the combo just gives the discount... im pritty sure...

zgeniez
02-04-2006, 12:26 AM
I have the combo and it's one book. Flameworking on one side, turn it over for the marketing.

borealisglass
02-04-2006, 12:28 AM
yeah I say get them seperate...cause then you can focus on a part at a time while another person can get the most out of the other part. And maybe just go through bluemoon since I believe that is directly through Milon. Don't want other people getting cuts of things! If you do them seperate to you can get one and wait and save for the other....

the combo is two seperate books
Oh yeah and the combo is together in one book, Making and Marketing and flip it upside down and around and it is the advanced flameworking....kinda weird

somberbear
02-04-2006, 12:39 AM
yea get them seperate then... they dont mesh togeather to well...

02-04-2006, 03:47 AM
hmm... paypal going to be the only payment option?

PyroChixRock
02-04-2006, 01:20 PM
Next month I start the portland saturday market and I'm going to have to get a merchant account for that, so maybe not. But as of now, you can use pay pal, or send check or money order to sign up or check out items. :)

PyroChixRock
02-04-2006, 01:42 PM
Well I ordered that and I'll add it to the check out items when it arrives.

So we have $26 after pay pal fees and shipping since dood uses UPS for shipping heh...nice. :tongue2:

If anyone has any other suggestions for inventory, let me know! :D

Great!
I've got a lot of stuff to go through and donate. One of these days I'll get a pile together- who approves it for membership?

PyroChixRock
02-04-2006, 02:04 PM
Me. :) And that's no big deal, just don't want people sending anything they have to get in ya know, so I threw that word in. ;) Can't wait to see what you have to donate, anything I can do to bribe you into doing it "sometime soon" instead of "one of these days"? :lol

Kronk
02-04-2006, 02:15 PM
Ok, I've got............

Humbolt's Secrets if wine goblets
Essential Lampworking, Corbin
Flamework: An intimate Art, Fowler

Old books.........
Homer Hoyt's Glassblowing
And for historical interest.......
Flameworking, glassmaking forthe Craftsman, Frederic Schuler
Creative Glassblowing, Hammesfahr,Stong
(actually pretty cool to peruse for fun)

This board was around to help me when I was barely able to make a retarded glass swan on my 8M. It's the least I can do.
Besides, this library is a cool concept.

I don't know if you mentioned this...If there is recurrent demand for an item do we just ship it to the next person. That would cut out a lot of shipping.

Call to the peeps....Ya'll must have stuff collecting dust on your shelves? Donate, and get to see more stuff.

PyroChixRock
02-04-2006, 07:13 PM
Yeah that's a good idea, Ed! :D

Thanks for the donations and suggestions! :D

Shipping tomorrow....
Another idea, why can't the person with a checkout keep it for two weeks OR until requested if it's not requested for another month?

PyroChixRock
02-08-2006, 09:48 PM
That's a good idea ed, but I'm afraid we'd have stuff scattered all over and getting lost, and I'd be the one trying to keep track of it. So I think keeping them for two weeks and then returning them, or asking if you can renew them for an extra week or two if someone isn't waiting on it's return, is the best idea. I really need this project to take up as little time as possible for it to work. :)

I'll let you know when we get the donations. :D

Can people donate vids/books in lieu of membership fees? For example I have Milon's vid on large sculptures I'd like to donate, especially if it got me a free year or two. I think I payed like $50 for it origionally.

I'm only askin cause I'm a full time student now (18 credit hrs) which means I'm poor. Being a student sucks, I liked it better when I had cash.

PyroChixRock
02-09-2006, 10:36 AM
yeah...it explains that in the first post. ;) we don't have that video, so it would be a great contribution. :) pm me for my address if you'd like to join.

You're probably gonna have to be real patient. The person that runs the library has had some real issues to deal with.

I joined months back and paid for shipping like you, but haven't really heard anything yet. But I also let it be known I could wait, due to the circumstances.

I'm not even sure the library is actually up and running right now. Hope you aren't upset and just know that no one's ripping you off or anything like that.

PyroChixRock
09-27-2006, 12:15 PM
nope the library is closed for a little bit longer. I'm rebuilding it on my site, and it works a whole hell of a lot better! It will be a lot easier to catch up with. Everyone's membership will be restarted and extended, as soon as I finish it. :)
