Melting Pot 2012 Marble Exchange! - sign up is OPEN

Please post in this thread if you want to be included. Da List below will be updated as people sign up.

This is going to be DIFFERENT from many other exchanges and will hopefully ensure that everyone gets a marble back for each one they send in.

You get back the same number of marbles that you submit. They can all be different or similar to each other. It is up to you.

The minimum number of allowable marbles is 2 (two). The maximum will be determined by the number of participants who sign up. When the exchange is closed, the maximum number of allowable marbles will be 1/3 of the number of participants. If 30 people sign up then the maximum number of marbles you can send in will be 10. Any number of submissions between the minimum and the maximum are permissible. You will get the same number of marbles that you sent in but from different artists. The exchange will be canceled if less than 6 people sign up!

Rules
• marlbes MUST be made by you
• Anything cracked WILL BE RETURNED!
• minimum of two (2) to maximum is to be determined by the number of participants
10 sign up would mean 3 max
15 sign up would mean 5 max
20 sign up would mean 7 max
25 sign up would mean 8 max
30 sign up would mean 10 max
35 sign up, 12 max and more than that would make me crazy so we’ll stop there.
• please feel free to post pictures of your marbles to encourage others to sign up!
• see below for other information

Checklist before sending package in:
• Send in two (2) to the maximum (see above) entries and you will receive the same number of marbles back
• Mail to Marina Bonaventura, 1002 Anns Court, Asheboro, NC 27205
• TAG each marble with your name AND Melting Pot name
• Include a label with your return address already written (please don't make me write all those labels) and your phone # and email address so I can contact you if necessary. The personal information will not be posted online.
• Send $6 in cash, check, paypal gift, or money order. This will be used for the return flat rate USPS shipping box with a tracking number. For anyone outside of US you will owe actual postage of package back to you.
• Pendants must be postmarked by MAY 31, 2012 if you live in the US and postmarked by MAY 10, 2012 if you live anywhere but the US (that includes Canada!)

You don't have to commit to a specific # of marbles when you sign up. Just keep the number in line with the rules above and send them by the deadline. Shipping sooner is not a problem but if you want the maximum # of trades you will have to hope the maximum # of people sign up. The idea is to be able to get marbles from a variety of people with minimum fuss and bother and to be sure that you will get back goodies for what you send out. This format has worked well for me as a participant before. It's quite a task on the hosting end!

When you make a marble you plan to exchange go ahead and post a picture in this thread. You aren't spoiling anyone's surprise because you won't know who among the other artists will be the recipient. Plus it will encourage others to participate.

If you have questions, post them in this thread and I'll try to answer.

It would be nice to have a real name in this thread (at least first name but last too if you want). So please post it when you sign up if it's not in your sig line.

Please note that I'll also be hosting a pendant exchange ending April 30, 2012. Feel free to participate in both exchanges

Because of you I've got a couple bad ass pendants from artists I would have other wise never seen much less had their glass in my case. Now you've got marbles going? YOU ROCK!

I can't wait to get this collection started. I missed the other swaps so this will be awesome to me. And thank you for hosting these events, I don't know of any other industries that's ever done something like this with a bunch of people from all over the country/world. Also, forgive me if I misread, but when you say label them, do you mean engraved label them, or like a tag to go with it?

Just finished my first two marbles! One honeycomb (burnt out) and one surface-work after a day of some prodo. It's been one hell of a day. I don't know if the Marble Exchange will see today's work, I'm very much loath to call it even adequate knowing there are people in the exchange who've taken Kobuki's classes. Holy hell, pressure's on. By the time I make something I'd feel comfortable shipping, I'll probably have made enough marbles for their own progression thread! That is, if today's work is any indication. Maybe I'll try a vortex instead. You can't burn out a Vortex nearly as easily. Hope all is well, Boro-heads! Keep melting!

The typo is that I hadn't switched the word "pendants" for "marbles". Thanks for allowing me to clarify that Doug.

Oh ok cool, I was thinking maybe the pendants had more (or less) time, but if you're running them together that does give me time. It also means I can bring more work to AGE :)

If you haven't heard there will be a "non-functional" tent at AGE on at least one day for several hours for all the marble junkies to get their fix in some kind of semi-official venue at the show. I'll try to get more info... but it is official, there will be a symbiotic marble show at AGE! (some may say parasitic, but we're bringing collectors of glass in that otherwise wouldn't attend)!

No need to be intimidated, guys. There are many different skill levels that are represented in the list of artists (from what I can see). Just put out "your" best work and have fun. From what I understand, this is all about having fun with your work and getting the oppertunity to share your glass with other artists whom you may not normally have contact with and vice versa.

I know that I'm in the middle to lower end of the skill scale in reguards to marbles. But I'm looking at it as a chance to have fun with it, try new things, let other artists get my work and for me to get some other artists' work. I'm freakin' stoked!

I agree as well, that is the most positive attitude for one to have towards this whole event. But it is still a little intimidating, , at least for me. Really, I am very stoked, but the intimidation factor comes from the idea that the person receiving the marble might recognize a lack of time and technique in the execution and see it as a lesser piece than the one they submitted, even if it is done to the best of my ability. Then this mystery recipient might be less prone to joining in future such events while affixing an unfair perception to the skill level of the artist whose marble they received. I know, I should stop overthinking shit and just melt. Working on it.

No worries, the Doc does a good job of matching up the quality of pieces sent to the ones you receive. At least I thought so from what I saw in the pendant swap last year. The feeling of stepping up ones game is for me a never ending feeling. Skill and imagination are the only limits, that's why I love glassworking. Now, back to working on those skills. Can't wait to see what comes back.

I guess it's fine as long as you clearly indicate his name and your name for that specific piece. It's going to be "interesting" enough sorting these things without excessive complications and I don't want to risk sending your own marble back (or wondering where the random name came from) because of a labeling issue.

Second attempt at a honeycomb marble, not as burnt out as the first. Nothing but black on the backing for this one.

This one here's probably the largest I've made. About 1 3/4" wide, though I haven't measured it precisely. I way overcomplicated the pattern, I think, which was a very valuable lesson.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to be sending any of these out with the Marble exchange or if I just want to keep getting better between now and pre-deadline shipping time. Lord knows I was self-conscious enough just posting these, but I'm completely open to criticism. I don't think I'd have made these, even, if I hadn't decided to make myself a part of this exchange so thank you guys for the impetus!

wow i have not been able to produce marbles since i have signed up for this...i got caught up in a lot of other stuff and havent made a marble in a while but I do have a couple early ones I can send out. not the best, but i still would like to participate! I will get them out tomrorow!

edit: i just went through my glass and i guess i have more marbles ready to go than i thought. ill be sending 6 vortex and 2 fillagres

they arent my best works, but i hope whoever gets these enjoys them :)

Hey all! Haven't been posting much recently, but I haven't forgotten about you guys (obviously). Just got the marbles in the mail, box is postmarked with Flashburn Studios, return shipping fees are in the box, which also contains nine marbles, eight of them wrapped in green boxes with a contact label enclosed. The ninth may be enclosed in the exchange if you wish, or feel free to add it to your own collection, Marina. Marbles arrived today from Doug, Peg and Carlos! Wooooo! (I'll update the list again tomorrow)

I'm finding that some of the submissions WON'T fit in the flat rate boxes I was planning to use to send things back out. I may have to add a request for more $ for return postage for those whose boxes will contain some of the 2" and up beauties that are already here. Don't panic. Let me see how this all shakes out and we'll go from there. Some of you have already sent extra shipping funds. I'm not trying to make a buck here but I don't want to be out of pocket a whole lot either. Doug suggested regional boxes for the bigger mibs. That option is looking good.

Carlos (Losiwells) sent some really cool marble stands for four of his marbles. I'll try to get some pics posted before all is said and done.

I apologize I rushed my last two marbles and the punty marks are not completely rounded out. I really haven't figured out the best way to finish off a marble. I tried my hand torch this time and it seemed to melt an indent into where the punty was instead of rounding out. I used the torch with the marble in a graphit mold and the scar facing up. I tried to melt the imperfection away and then spin the marb in the mold to round it but gravity worked against me here. Back to the kitchen tongs I guess.

Gambit try flashing your final cold seal with the flame for a sec to stress it before trying to knock it off. It should pop off pretty cleanly then just touch it up with the hand torch.

another trick to release a stuborn cold seal and one i do regardless just to make it a cleaner split.

use a knife or any blade and touch the crease while spining one or two rotations and the cold metal will help seperate the two parts cleanly.

i set mib in mold and after touching with blade give a slight tap and its off. then bring it up right under a sharp hot flame for just a few seconds. if your scar cant be reomoved in a few seconds or you have to leave a divit there to melt it in. this means you are not really using an effective cold seal.

Also use the smallest size punty you are comfortable with to finish and taper it so the coldseal itself is small to begin with. Never finish with a coldseal on the lens always on the backing.

All great tips...and use a smaller, sharp flame with a bit of extra oxy to cook that punty mark off. You want to heat up the punty mark and an area about the width of the punty mark all around it, without heating up the rest of the mib.

My last cold seal tends to be precarious at best... I like to heat up the punty white hot, blow on it and then attach. As much as I hate playing "chase the bouncing ball of nearly molten glass"....it's worth it. Good times my friends, good times.

Hmm. Twenty people's marbles received out of fifty even a week after the months-posted due date. That seems a bit unfortunate. Not berating anyone, that just seems kinda sad. Even the folks having sent no word back, I mean I know things happen to get in the way but that is only a little unprofessional. I've been stoked to be a part of this thing for months, I even had a mad dash to the shipping center before they closed just to be sure I hit the deadline (barely got there). Of course, it is what it is, and I'm sure everyone is doing their best. But is this a common occurrence for marble exchanges? This one is kinda poppin' my cherry for these, after all. And whomever becomes a bearer of one of my marbles, I do hope they enjoy what I've made. It was a wonderful learning experience and now I'm hooked on marble-making, and I've just had people asking left and right what they can do to get one. I've even turned a few friends on to the wide world of mib-collecting as well. So to the host I say Even if this exchange wasn't as smooth as a dream from your guys' end, do know you've made wonderful things happen across the country, and at least in my little shop. I can't wait to see how this all wraps up and I'm all over anything like this in the future. And next pendant exchange, if it happens, I'm all over that too! (I've even made a few before! :D) Keep melting, glassholes!

There is a certain percentage of people who will drop off the face of the planet and you'll never hear from them again.

It's a PITA to host an exchange, secret santa, or anything else that requires lots of people to cooperate.

At one point was an agreed upon system for participation and hosting of exchanges, but really if someone is willing to host, it's hard as a community to say "no, you can't" .... I suppose the mods could.

The way Marina is doing it best, mainly because no one gets shafted - but it's more work, more shipping, more money...OTOH, she can sort of jury the exchange as well to keep it more egalitarian... The random from a hat exchanges always result in an unbalanced exchange, and people shipping their work, but not getting anything in return....

I do hope there is a HARD deadline, and it should be made known eventually.... I get some people just can't get it done on time and it's nothing against them if it's for a decent reason... hell anything but "I was too lazy to do it" works for me. That and "I forgot" I guess.

Anyways, can't wait to see what comes... patience, it will happen :)

Today's mail included Berning's package of 5 beauties and Bunyip sent 5 killers too.

I'm sorting on Saturday so anything else that comes tomorrow will be in the exchange. Sorry if some people got the wrong idea because I allowed so much extra time on the pendants exchange. It just sucks to know that things are in the mail and yet not allow them to swap.

Also on the subject of even swaps. I promise to do my best but please bear in mind there is a pretty wide range of skill levels represented. All good, just at different stages of the game. I'm going to try to make sure everyone is happy with their exchanges. The somewhat smaller number of entries than I predicted may limit my choices though.

Thanks to all who are participating. I expected some drop-outs but not quite to this extent. Perhaps the deadline was too far off from the sign-ups. I'll think hard about that before considering hosting another. (Plus, I want to make sure this one ends well first.)

So bottom line is: big love to all you awesome marble makers who are in this mix and no hate to those who couldn't make it for whatever reason.

Nice, my delivery confirmation STILL doesn't show it was recv'd, so... good to hear. Hope you like the host gift, Marina, that's another piece which was hard to let go!

I think you did a great job with the pendant exchange, I really enjoyed the pieces I got, of all skill levels. It's really cool to see all the different ideas & ways people work. It definitely stimulated my creativity. In fact, I need my creativity stimulated some more, so...I can send in more marbles in a week or if you find yourself stuck with any "leftovers" you want to get rid of ;)

I'm definitely stoked to see some of the pieces people have posted. Steve's (akmewon's), for example look very nice (though the cat in the hat is not the one >I< liked best), and there some other killer pieces I saw on the preceding pages that really have me looking forward to the mail next week! Oh, and Doug's "no picture" marbles, sound verrrry intriguing.

Marina, I also sent you a PM, I'd appreciate it if you could get back to me on that.

One of these days I'm gonna figure out the whole good picture thing. I've got a crappy little light box that just makes things look worse. And yes, I know, there are lots of threads with advice. Sigh. I just need to take the time to read and understand...

And taking pictures is a huge learning curve, it only looks simple. It helps a lot if you have a DSLR because you can use the right lenses. Most P&S cameras are fairly limited in aperture settings, even at the "pro-sumer" level. A light box is useful, but it's just a tool, and I think it's importance is overrated a lot of times. It's just that you can make a light box for pennies, whereas a decent DSLR + a great lens will set you back a nice chunk of dough.

Having the right equipment and the know-how to use it yields spectacular results without a light box. The attached picture was taken on my kitchen counter top, on a 12"x12" piece of gray wool felt, on an overcast Florida day with no interior lights on. A light box would have probably not yielded the glare from the window, but... I can live with that for a quick shot :)
