I've had a few people ask me if I can make them, but I've never held one in person. A Google image search turned up a few different types of varying complexity and artistry. Anyone make/use them? Any preferences (or insight into what exactly is going on in there)?

Yeah, I saw some that were even called "Vinturi." They look like this:

A more artsy version of the same-looking thing:

Can someone decipher this diagram?

Then there are the kind that go on the bottle. Simple, but effective? I don't know.

Any thoughts?

are wine decantors and aerators the same thing?

http://www.google.com/search?q=wine%20decanter&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=fi

, i made one for a buddy for christmas, i think by transferring a the liquid into any other container that air will begin to release the othe flavors in the wine, but i really dont know

Yes and no. They are meant to achieve the same effect, but an aerator is supposed to do it as you pour your glass (so you don't need to use a decanter).

I don't know, looks to me like there's some double-wall funkiness in that second bubble...

decant is to filter.. or "to pour from one container to another, esp without disturbing any sediment"

aerators intention self explanatory.. and yes.. they say many young red wines improve significantly when aerated..

So what looks like is going on in that diagram is you have a tube inside a bubble with holes in it to let the wine trickle in and run down onto the bottom where it trickles out and into the wineglass. I'm gonna have to give one a try. I've got some friends who are huge wine folks.

Here's about the easiest venturi you can make:

Take a piece of heavy or standard wall tubing, and weld it on to whatever the hell you want to use for the funnel. For something like this, something like 15-17 mm tubing should be fine. Take a 10 mil rod and use it to make a generous dot on one side of the tubing. Melt the dot in, so it makes a constriction in the tube on one side. Heat a small area, just below the dot (after the constriction, in the direction of flow) and pop a small hole, and you're done, unless you want to add a tube to said hole to provide an inlet to whatever you're wanting to suck into the larger stream.

If you're into fish accessories, these make fantastic aerators or CO2 dispersion pieces... the bubbles are teeny tiny and pretty numerous.
