well i think its time to start making the plans for this years event. i want to extend the invites to those who participated last year but i would also like some new faces and talent. i know there will be atleast one if not more people that wont be making it.

that being said.....my projected date for this year is memorial day weekend. early enough so we dont have the mosquitos and heat like last year. although the skeeters might be out earlier this year cuz of the lack of winter we had here. second warmest on record.

i still have to figure out which school we are donating to this year. from last years event we raised 1500 dollars. 300 went here and the other 1200 will be going to the grade school in my town. schools closed all week so ill be cutting them a check next week.

so whos down for this year? mind you this is a first come first serve basis and last years participants have first dibs. this is not open to the public and is a 2 day event. last year we had 24 participants. anymore than that and itll be hard to work.

participants will be split into 4 groups and each group will have a theme to make a large collab piece. this is not a paid event. you are donating your time. in return you get to learn and network and most importantly you get to help keep art programs in schools.

themes? memorial weekend work?

for those who didnt participate......im sure you can ask last years participants how much fun we had last time.

lets get the ball rolling!

you know it!

themes........

astrological signs.....do a series of pieces, instead of 4 large collabs, with each sign being covered.

earth, wind, fire, water.......4 large pieces

super heros.......just pick 4 super heros and do 4 large peices or a series of smaller peices

the goal is to make these pieces functional but at the same time not really being able to tell. for example how RAM makes his latest pieces. not trying to drop any names........

sweet! itll be a good time again for sure. i got a few sponsors already lined up for this years event. just gotta get the ball rolling on the theme and participants.

this event is as always open to midwest and great lakes region lampers. dont matter if you been in the game for 1 month or 50 years. last year we had participants from as far away as philly, duluth, and detroit.

we could do 4 large teams like last year or break down into smaller groups and do a larger series of pieces. anyone have some ideas?

As for theams we could pic random ones, they dont have to be in one category..... for instance a 1950's ray gun looking piece, an organic vine piece with leaves and floral stuff, H.R.Gigger alienesk, idk just throwing out ideas.

Julian you best be there son, wouldnt be the same without you.

i cut the grade school a check today for 1200 bucks from last years event. they were very suprised as they didnt know anything about the event or that they were the recipiant of the funds brought in. the principle called the art teacher down to the office to meet me. she was very suprised to see what we had done for the kids. she and the rest of the staff say thank you.

it was perfect timing too. the art teacher mentioned that she was just going over what they needed to get for the classroom and was wondering how she was going to make it happen. problem solved!

i want to say thank you to all who participated and to all the sponsors. so THANK YOU. you are all a great bunch of people with huge hearts and i am very proud to have the privilege to work with all of you. you should all be proud of yourselfs and deserve a pat on the back.

Thanks for putting this on again Danny! Attending G.L.A.S.S. was a great experience last year, and you can count on wieseatron and I coming back this year too.

Maybe different bio-zones for themes? (Like rainforest, coral reef, tundra...) ? However, something like that forces everyone to do realistic-type work.

I also like the idea of having 4 completely un-related categories.

star
03-25-2012, 02:25 PM
Yea, hybrids are funny but I do agree. Giving people room to interpret a broad/open-ended subject might yield more creativity and possibilities. Otherwise we'd all have to be decent at animal-sculpting. I liked how all the groups' pieces had lots of "parts" last year.

Coal
03-25-2012, 05:41 PM
Yes I agree. if we are too specific I dont think it will turn out as well.
Also I think that each team should also focus on not just one main piece, but a set as in jar, chillum, spoon, sherlock, bub, whatever and main piece.

I know our team busted ass on some crazy fish thing. It turned out but almost was an epic failure. We pulled through... but i felt we spent way to much time on keepin it from failing... and in the end I felt like some of the less exp. guys on the team didnt get the opt. to really help out and be as active as they could have. I ment that as we could have used more stuff they made and been more involved from a team base.

It all worked out, and everyone had a great time. But this year im comming with exp from last year and I think we all learned how hard it it to coordinate 6 people into making some shit in two days!!!

Bring it on!

B.C. Creations
03-25-2012, 06:11 PM
we need a couple bigger named artists to step up and join us. coyle was a big part last year and wont be making it. so thats one down. havent talked to budman yet. if hes not making it then that will be 2 leaders missing.

are we not trying to hide the fact that they are pipes? that was a big part of last years. they all looked like sculptures and you had to look closely to notice they were pipes. id personally like to stick with that but am up for anything. i feel if they are more sculpted than just pipes we might get more recognition.

Coal
03-25-2012, 06:19 PM
I get what your saying. But are we going for a "incognito" look? If so then fuck making it a pipe. Lets just do sculpture/pipe team choice. I didnt realize we where kinda hiding it behind a sculpture.

The concept of multiple pieces is from a place to get everyone invloved, and resale point of view.

Im just throwing out ideas, I want this to be even better than last year, more productive to boot. Just honest here.

I had a great time last year, learned a ton about team work and leadership. You dont have to be a "big name" artist to be a leader. You need leadership skills, and coordination. Not easily done.

Whatever we decide to do as a group, im down and will 100% go for it.

B.C. Creations
03-25-2012, 06:31 PM
i hear ya. that was the whole deal last year was hide the fact that it was a pipe. it made people push their limits and got us more recognition. there are plenty of things newer artists can make that can be incorporated into a piece.

most bigger name artists that would be into doing something like this would have leadership skills as they would more than likely have done collabs before. i already have a buyer for this years pieces. we just have to make them.

maybe we dont have any newbie artists participate? maybe we need to make it that participants have x amount of time in? i dont know and i really dont want to exclude people either but i also want all who are signed up to participate.

like i said im open for what ever.

Julian
03-25-2012, 07:02 PM
I viewed it more as we were to make something that had more of an idea going on that just a typical pipe shape and colors.

It was quite a challenge to get together with 6-7 people I'd never met, in a shop I'd never been in, and try to turn out a large, top quality piece in less than 2 days. What we really needed to do was spend more time organizing and planning the piece before starting.

B.C. Creations
03-25-2012, 07:17 PM
that is why we are discussing this now. last year i anounced the teams 2 months before hand so the teams could talk about their plan of action. most of the teams knew what they were making to some extent and had colors picked out way before the event. same needs to be done this time and thats why we are discussing it.

i still dont know who all is coming at this point. i have a list of maybe 10 for sures. we atleast need to figure that out to start.

so far i got

mr. ed

next we need a theme or direction. i like the elements theme....earth wind fire water. or?

OracleGlassArts
03-25-2012, 07:22 PM
Yea I second that Julian.

I know I'm not as experienced as others, but I can lead a team if no one else steps up. From my team at least last year, there wasn't much solid plans set before the start, even tho we had a bunch of time in advance to meet or at least talk. I think we should set a timeline up for having a drawing or structure/function submitted before we head up, just to make sure we stick to one plan rather than going for it blind.

I liked the techniques based them kinda, could be limiting on the sculpture and styling.
The biospheres sounds like it would push us to get creative, I think I like that the most.
Elements would basically take care of color choices, simplify that aspect.

B.C. Creations
03-25-2012, 07:41 PM
heres last years spring team thread for which you were on alex......scroll down on the first page and look at the drawing.
http://www.talkglass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38679

and heres the final product. your team def knew what they were making going into it and didnt go in blind. thats the exact reason why we need to talk about it before hand. create a plan and execute. which your team did fabulously.

B.C. Creations
03-25-2012, 07:43 PM
i think we need smaller teams with not as many newbies.

What I meant is before that, we talked about a number of things I thought we were doing and ended up doing the picture. I really didn't have any say in doing that piece, that was Ed and jake's genious, but like I said the plans Ed and I had made before that got trumped. What I understood going into it was that we were doing a storm head and lightening bolts.

Icarus
03-26-2012, 07:13 AM
Danny, I like your elements idea that you threw out a while back. It is similar in theme to the seasons theme from the prior year, but still open to interpretation.

Air, Earth, Fire, Water

If you went something like this, each team could kind of decide which way they want to go with it, whether they want to be sculptural in nature, or just use a color pallet that suggests that element (personally I'd love to work on the earth one, cause in my mind I'm thinking browns, moss greens, etc... and I like those colors)

You could even split it into 8 teams instead of 4, and give each of the elements to two teams to see what each team comes with.

I would stick with making these all pipes even if they don't look like pipes, as pipes sell. Art... sometimes sells.

That's my two cents.

FizZle
03-26-2012, 08:14 AM
^ no worries icarus...im sure they will all be pipes :) thats what we do brother!

so we gonna start drawing names from a hat? Pairs? I think pairs would be best. way less stress. Elements sounds good, lets do it.

I chatted up Karl via PM, sounds like he's interested, did you talk to him yet?

I like what Icarus was saying, you could put all the names in a hat, and the 4 elements in another, draw an element, pick 2 names, repeat till element hat is empty, then refill the hat w/ the 4 elements, repeat till the names hat runs dry. Would be cool to see what 2 different pairs come up with for the same theme.

do you have enough people signed up yet to start drawing names yet Danny?

I had a thought last night about the elements theme. It's not really considered an element (or I guess it is depending on which book you're reading / game you're playing), but if you wanted to add another one to that, you could add a "Shadow" element. It would allow you to have one more thing so you could break groups up more, it would also allow for a dark (greys, blacks, etc...) color pallet, and it would allow some of the artists to work more dark in subject matter.

My other thought was a "Space" or "Celestial" theme. So like, "Sun, Moon, Stars, Black Holes, etc.." Since the money goes to a school, it kinds of ties in with learning and exploration, and also that's fun subject matter that naturally kind of lends itself to glass.

star......yes those are set dates. works best for me with having a wee one on the way in june. easier on my prego wifey. also less skeeters and less heat. it shouldnt be 90 degrees then but who knows with the way this years going already. might be 100 by then......

we could do elements and science themes with 8 teams?

Just my 2 cents about team sizes, that occurred to me while droning away on prodo....

Last year, wieseatron and I attended and took time off our full-time jobs to make it. It was our first time meeting other pipemakers in person, as we are self-taught in the northwoods of wisco. So, neither of us were at a skill level to be very essential to the teams we were on. But we learned SO MUCH just by working with all the great people that attended.

Between G.L.A.S.S. and AGI, we decided to quit our regular jobs in the fall and go full time with glass!

My point is, if enough people can attend, it may be good to have team sizes of 4-5, so at least 2-3 people on a team can be of a level to create a solid piece, while those less-skilled can make easier parts and learn. I just hope others can have an experience as influential as we had last year.

Sorry for making an essay out of this, thanks!

i think this year participants will be required to bring a piece of their own to donate to the event. made on their own time before the event. this will help raise more funds and i dont believe is too much to ask. i dont care if its a 2 dollar pendant or marble or pipe. or if its a 200 dollar piece.

ill be putting a list of participants together after 420. are we set on the elements theme? we can double up the elements if need be. either way i have to get a materials list out to the sponsors so they have time to put them together for us.

this is coming up fast. im excited!

Wut? Wut? Meet Freeek!?

Just gotta say that's a dream come true for me, and worth a donation in itself.

Well, I would be completely down but I've got a race on Sunday of that weekend. I will definitely come out for the first day, and I'll bring a piece to donate too. Probably going to look like a pipe though ;) I'll try and drag Capn' Crunk with too...

Awesome. Great teams.

Wind team, do you want to start a thread to start to plan things out? Sort of how it was done last year? I know most of us are on here with some regularity, so it might work.

Also, does anyone need a ride up from Madison? I'm going up early Saturday and either leaving late that night or camping the night and leaving at around 9 or 10 the next morning.

Ok well I'm not sure that I can lead a team only being there for 1 day... Pretty much need to pack up and split around 8pm at the absolute latest on Saturday; I have to be up at 6am to race on Sunday in Milwaukee so...

just got the message that you called. if you can lead the day your here i can take over when you leave. im fully capable of leading but i have alot on my plate for that day keeping everything going smoothly. i hope that we are done on the first day and the second day is just for wraping up. let me know if that works.

Paul Stephan
05-04-2012, 08:22 AM
Yeah, I hate to do it but I should probably step down from being one of the team leaders...sorry about that, that was what I was calling to talk to you about Dan. Being that I have a commitment the next am I know I'm going to have to get out of there way earlier than I think. I actually just wanted to come hang out and heckle everyone, without blowing glass. I guess they call that moral support? That's why I was saying that I'd bring a tube or something to donate...is that ok?

Just called the store and your employees don't seem to know anything about the event? Hrmmm. I was going to drive up but is this thing not going on now? How about a flyer or something? Address? Need more info.
