Not sure if anyone here knows longtime marble enthusiast/dealer/promoter MarbleAlan Basinet, but I thought I should let y'all know that he passed away this morning, due to some pretty dread cancer.

He specialized in classic marbles, but he had a hand in contemporary boro marbles too, and was a strong voice of encouragement to many of us marblers at our start, including myself.

Rest in Peace Alan!

Alan was a wealth of marble knowledge, vintage and contemporary. He ran a marble forum years ago, which is how I found the glass community. He was an advocate of weed, an extremely reputable and conscious appraiser and seller of marbles, and I admired him very much.

Yes, I saw this on Facebook yesterday and was deeply saddened by it. Never had the pleasure of meeting Alan, but did buy from him occasionally and know that I would have enjoyed hanging out with him. So sad when such a small community looses a great.

RIP Alan.

Never had the opportunity to meet the man, it sounds like it would have been a greatly enriching experience. Rest in peace, good sir. May the benefit of your memory outweigh the loss of your presence.

bummer man. alan was definitely a good guy. back during operation pipe dreams, and the whole pipe market went to shit, i actually made a real living off hollow marbles for about 6 months, and alan was a big part of that for me. he was always straight up and a pleasure to deal with, and really helped me transition out of pipes for good - which just happened to be really good for my career at the time (i have nothing against them by any means). if i hadn't had that outlet at the time, god, i probably would have a real job or something. thanks dood - you'll be missed

I had the pleasure of communicating with Alan several years ago while in search of vintage marbles. While I became an admirer and customer… I discovered he was a bird lover and a fan of my own creations he saw in my Nature’s Window showroom in Atlanta. About 4 years ago, I visited him in his home in Jacksonville. He had offered to appraise a fairly large group of assorted marbles from my collection. Though he asked no fee for the task, I allowed him to pick one of his personal favorites from my collection. He was a quiet and gentle person who shared the frustration of losing the camera he had used for many years to acquire incredible photos. I also perceived he was concerned about his health. Through it all, he maintained a positive attitude. He will be missed. - Paul

One of the nicest O'Grady marbles in my collection I got from Alan years ago. Perhaps we should start posting pictures of the mibs he helped get out in to the world! A fitting tribute. Enjoy the great glass museum in the sky Alan. Peace.
