Hello everyone . John here
Just wanted to pop in and say hello. looks like a great forum i will be doing a lot of research here. I'm a total novice and wanting to get into lampworking bassicly for pipes on a hobbiest level figured i could spend about 3 grand to get started (hopefully that's enough). But i want to do my research before i figure out what to buy

Welcome.
The best place on the web encompassing the subject I know of.
Spend your money wisely and 3 grand is plenty to get started.

Welcome this site is an amazing resource... get familiar with the search bar it is your friend.
3000 should be enough... Id recomend buying:
Torch- GTT Lynx $400 or a GTT Mirage $1700 (remember to include cost of hose regulators flashback arrestors ect.)
Kiln- AIM 99LS digi $980 Paragon F130 $1,450 the Skutt Scarab is out of your price range
Hand tools - several sizes of graphite rods, a reamer, a tungsten pick, some shades, a marver, 6x6 graphite surface, a blow hose assembly, finger grabber tool, various sizes of tweezers, and a glass scoring knife
Exhaust- make sure you budget for some form of exhaust system your lungs are worth it
Glass- Start with some 12mm 15mm and 25mm heavy wall tubing and some 4mm, 6mm, and 10mm clear rod. Untill you get a feel for glass dont waste your money on color. I would also recommend getting a silver coin for some fuming and stay away from asian glass.

thanks for the warm welcomes and advice
i was thinking of just ordering a kit http://www.mountainglass.com/Carlisle-CC-Ball-Post-Torch-Starter-Kit-5.html
I could always have them swap out torches for a better one

That's a great torch. A kiln and some glass and your set. That torch could serve you well for a very long time.
this thread is so much better than i thought it would be.

welcome to flameworking. I personally don't recommend GTT torches for beginners. They are too easy to kill. Get a carlisle CC burner (very durable) until you are familiar with the glass and how to work it. Then sell it and get a GTT. I've seen several novices kill their GTT's They are really a professional level burner.
Have a great day!

welcome bro :)
3k will be enough if you aren't building a workshop from the ground up. Check out the glassified section here and keep an eye out on other sites too. you can get most if not all the equipment you need to start up used for way cheaper
