Hey Y'all, I've had the 2nd edition since 2002 and plan on getting #3 asap. My question is... What does #1 cover that 2 doesn't? Thanks for any positive responses.

I know there's at least a table of annealing schedules in vol 1 that isn't in the other two. I'm sure there's way more tho. I don't think they overlap much if at all really. I've only had the opportunity to glance at all three, waiting for the funds to buy the set.

You mean 3rd edition, volumes 1 and 2? they're (almost) always sold as a set, so you'd get both books together, it's just an expansion of the coverage of the second edition, more pics, updated sources, revised content, etc...

Volume 3 is sold by itself (usually) and covers kinetic glass sculpture (marble runs, glass steam engines, etc) as well as many of the large international glass events and historically glass centric communities around the world.

If the case really is you want to know what's in volume one and you already have volume two, then you can just open up your volume two and look at the table of contents. It has what's listed in one in there as well...

If I remember correctly vol 1 goes over a bunch of clear techs, understanding tha heat base in glass, setup, and a bunch of other awesome stuff. You should definitely pick that up

Thanks for all the replies to my query. Still not really sure about the answer.

Doug: Didn't see anything about edition, etc... Sorry about wrong terminology in !st post. I should have said Volumn 2 I guess.

Hell, I don't know.... it's PURPLE.

Please consider me to be in some stage of Oldtimers disease.

oh nothing like that, just saying there's a lot of versions out there.

the current edition is 3rd edition, which is now 3 volumes.

the purple, spiral bound book is 2nd edition, and the black cover is the first edition.

Basically, every edition adds significant information to the project, and within the third edition there is virtually no informational overlap in any of the volumes within that edition. Volumes 1 and 2 are generally considered a set that expands on the original single volume book, so if you have an earlier edition then much of the material will be familiar or just simply redundant, along with the new information. it's been a while since i read earlier editions, so specifics are tricky.

vol. 3 is seemingly entirely new content, or significant expansion on information briefly touched upon in the first 2 volumes and earlier editions.

hope that helps you decide.
