View Full Version : How deep are your dishes?
I typically make disc-flip style dishes that come out around 2.5-3" in diameter and around 1/2-3/4" deep. I recently had a shop turn me down on one that was "too shallow" (to be fair, it was not as deep as I usually make them, but it was still about a half inch). Having seen a variety of dish shapes/sizes in person and in pictures, I'm wondering: What is the preferred size and shape for a dish?

I've seen some dishes with a depth that makes a cheez whiz jar lid look imposing.
Personally, I make them large enough that one could credibly serve ranch dressing.
Julian, you crack me, so consistently, up.
I've seen a few "plate"-shaped dishes in shops, but I more often see something reminiscent of a pimento jar. Maybe those work fine, but I feel like they don't look as nice. There's also less room for design. I guess I'll just leave more glass on when I flame cut for a bigger rim.

i have used more dishes than most. my preference for a traditionally shaped one is large and shallow, maybe 2-2.5 inches in diameter, with sides less than 1/2 an inch tall. say 3/8" from the bottom of the dish to the top of the edge.
lately though i made a few paperweight dishes. they are extremely shallow, yet large. they have a huge advantage over edged dishes in that one can scrape them completely clean with a razor blade. cleaning a regular dish out completely is a pain in the ass, involves a lot of heat etc. no matter how they are shaped, they cant beat a paperweighter for ease of use.
I agree with HMK. I also think that your headshop owner should accept that folks are different and have different tastes, the more diverse selection he has the better chance he has of making a sale.

I like them big and shallow enough the scrape thoroughly also with the dabber rests positioned so that you can lay the dabber across the top flat instead of at an angel

i dont do dabber rests unless its a request. a dabber should be rested vertically imo, but i dont wipe the dabber off like most do i guess.

mine are more like a pad, if someone wants a dish to have a large lip sticking up they prob have never used one.
Thanks for the response, all!
When I have some time to make a few, I'll post them here and you can tell me what sucks about them... ;-)

I usually make em pretty deep. But I'm thinking about making some puck style dishes and those are pretty shallow. I'm starting to feel like unless a deep dish has a lid and you plan to use it for storage too that It's just to much effort to have to scrape it out after you dab. A shallow dish allows for ease of use when your done. I guess what I would look for in a dish is an easy surface to reclaim what has not been smoked for storage in some parchment paper. I think a badass filla bubble flattened with a slight concave for the dish is where it is at. :0)
deep dish. chicago style. no olives.
