I've never had a facebook/myspace, i see some advantages, but still haven't gotten one.

if you are trying to promote something they are a good way to get information out. it seems like our crowd here only overlaps a bit but in the case of fb that is kinda good. we can talk to each other easily enough but there are a ton of glassblowers that aren't here. there are also buyers retail and wholesale that would have little interest in the highly technical nature of our discussions.

so far twitter seems to be a waste and the blog sites are only good if you refer people to them from here or fb. fb is the biggest. i know it seems obvious but i'm making the point because i don't think some people understand. fb is cool and lame in the same way that any crowd is. harvesting info? why did you give them anything real to harvest. you can find the person who has the interest or money or whatever you are looking for and if you don't get that elsewhere it seems crazy to ignore it. the threat is what you make of it, use common sense. it's a million times safer than slinging glass at a phish show.

and x2 on "why did you give them anything real to work with", though in my case, I went with my real name because I use FB for contacts witth anyone but my day job. If they can harvest anything from what I put up, more power to them. Not like they're gonna get SHIT through my Adblock. Only this site and a couple others have exceptions for Adblock...y'know, sites that support me as much as I support them.

does Reddit count as social media? I am hooly on there. modding the /r/lampwork and /r/glassblowing subs. Also reddit is a great way to connect with the customer base without getting spammed to hell...there are some great people posting there.
