Sharon Peters has a great joke like that on her webpage, hop[e she doesn't mind me sharing it here:
A guy wins $15 million in the lotto, and they ask him what he's gonna do with it and he says "Guess I'll just keep doing bead shows till the money runs out..."

i make good money at this, its all about striking a balence between fun stuff and production. Make sure you can cover bills, than fuck around making real nice stuff, but300-400$ a day isn't bad, just hot as hell in the summer heat!
or, sell stuff to rich folk for twice the price, thats allways fun!
Simple,
Just all send me 50$ to my address, and i will tell you how to make a fortune out of glass :)

Any advice to a relative newbie on just how to sell your prodo stuff. I make some nice prodo spoons/bats but havent figured out how or where to sell my pieces (aside from random people or FOAF's). I would love to quit my shitty job and be able to do this full time just need some pointers on how to unload my stuff

Depends on where ya live. My shopmate makes some nice sherlocks, surface work and fume prodo stuff, he's been asking $7 a pop to the shops, we went around to 8 differnt shops in one day and he sold 3 out of a case of about 40.
Everyone likes 'em, no one buys 'em....
This town has too many blowers and too many shops.... last I counted I came up with 17 shops here and I can't even keep track of how many pipemakers... the local supplier says his list has >100 names on it, but that's not worth shit.
*shrug* I make marbles, and I don't care if they sell or not :\

actually I think the most important quality is to be reliable to yourself. Getting up everyday an working, 7-8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. If you set yor goals low an don't quit til 250 a day, shit, that's 1,000-1500 a week. getting up early, not getting to fucked up too bad at night, etc. all that helps. dont saftey break every hour

Work a lot!
Don't know about 9 hours, but 5 will be great too.
DO TAKE BREAKS!!! unless you want to get sick of it very soon, If I dont take a break every houre I feel like my face dris up.
Experiment in all kind of products, untill you find what's eaziest for you to make/ sell.
Experiment in few kinds of glass, Don't be stuck on boro... Soft Glass marbles are simply FUN!!! after making boro marbles you will find out you can make double sized SG marble for quarter of the fire heat and size.
Practice all kinds of techs, so you will become versitile and capable of doing anything.
Don't copy others work for selling purpose (just for practice) and after a while you will get your own style.
Advertize.
Peace,
Orr.

work work work work work work, live, eat, sleep, and breathe glass......and 14 hour days don't hurt. it is a hard living you have to watch every dollar that comes and goes noone writes me a paycheck so i watch em pile up and do my best not to spend it. about to buy a lathe so things are good, but it took a lot of work to get here.........and you never know tomm could be different.

Another thing about selling stuff when you just start. You might be better off just selling those to your friends and waiting till they get nice to take them to a shop. The thing is if you show up with some ok work and get say $5 each for some spoons, when they get nicer and are worth $7-$10 the guy will be like no those were 5 and you can point out how they got nicer but the guy most likely won't care, he will think of you as the $5 spoon guy forever... Maybe not if you come up with completly diffrent items, but that was my expierence with the 1st shop that took some of my crap.
That goes for anything, the 1st couple might be off a little and its better to wait and try to save enougth nice clean ones to get the price you really want. The price tends to be set when you first sell an item even it it gets just a little better.
oh yeah work lots

Hahaha I just found this old thread... funny!
Seriously, though, if you work hard and get good you can make a living just like with any other business. I pay my mortgage with money earned from glass, and while I'm not "livin' large" I can afford to do stuff I want and not just stuff I need. I make more than I did working for someone else, that's for sure.
And yeah, beads do sell! People always have and always will want pretty things to ornament themselves with, it's part of being human.
14 hour days do hurt...its not worth the fatigue and physical duress....i have to say that i agree with orza cause the breaks often keep you from getting carpal tunnel and it guives your skin a break too. i take a break for 10 minutes atleast every hour..i d say on how to make a small fortune...1, find a production item your good at, and sell the hell out of it. i have a list of every beadstore in the unted states, i make beads, and start my day by calling them from 9 am till 12 noon, sending them pics, furtering my contact list EVERY DAY..selling is like a job, you need to work at it Every day. but id suggest finding a credit card and doing e bay, hell strt a website and hold auctions of your own glass...the key to the fortune is attacking it from 10 different angles at once.be your own wholesaler/auctioner/gallery boss/ whatever...JUST DO IT!!!!!!
havent figured out how or where to sell my pieces (aside from random people or FOAF's). I would love to quit my shitty job and be able to do this full time just need some pointers on how to unload my stuff[/QUOTE]
PM me some pics I might be able to help get some gone. Oh, a price list might help.

I think it is all contacts. We don't do the best, but haven't had anyother job for 8 years now. We have our stores and we have worked with them for that long so they trust us. It is all about how you treat your customers. We throw extras in most of the boxes we send, everyone loves extras.

On a serious note... If you are "self" employed, make sure you're set up as a business, take all the tax breaks you can, and fund an SEP IRA every year as well as taking advantage of a ROTH IRA if you can (you don't want to have to "work" forever....)

if you have good pictures of work you do that you need to get rid of, can't it be posted here? at least post to glasspipes.org and link us to it. there are lots of shops owners that go through glasspipes, as well as a few that go through here.
lots of blowers can buy up glass if they're going to be going to festivals and whatnot.. anyway.. just another outlet.
