I wrote an step-by-step article for the Feb./Mar. edition of Glass Line magazine on some sectional vase techniques. I got it in the mail yesterday and a picture of my vase was on the cover!! Needless to say I am stoked. Here is a picture of the cover, it looks funny because I scanned it. Peace, Jacob

Yeah I've been saving for a big torch for awhile and just got my herbie 65, so now its time to make some bigger things. Its so nice to not have the need for a bigger flame. If you notice I am using my old carlisle in the last pic. I've just been playing around with different techniques and making smaller pieces so there is not so much time involved.

hey bearassed naked i liked your vessel so much that last night i did your step by step in different colors. i have only been doing hollow work for a short time and need lots of practice. by the time i blew the last bubble though the clear was really devitted up. how do you overcome this? work faster? i have been sandblasting the devit away and firepolishing when this happens. do you ever do this?

To keep the piece from getting devitrified I just make sure that my propane/oxy mix is like 1/5, so I run like 4 pounds of propane and at least 20 oxy on the carlisle. A lot of the time I will turn off the center fire and just use the outer rings to create a more oxidizing flame. Also make sure that the piece soaks in enough heat before you try to blow it out or else some parts will blow out and others wont = devitrification. This is also harder when using bands of clear and color. With some colors it is better to just coil a big section and make a tube, then take off small sections as you need them. That way the color gets worked a little less.

And always remember " If you arent making mistakes, you arent really pushing yourself ". I cant remember where I heard this, but I really try to remember it when a piece turns out looking like shit

Jacob - I really like that quote dude! I just made a piece of shit yesterday. I spent about 4 hours on it and it almost was going to look decent until around the 3 hour mark. I tried some new shapes I'd never done before and fucked em up. I was pushing myself, but I didn't really think about it like that until I read that quote. Makes me feel a bit better about those 4 hours I had thought I wasted.

Thanks man!
