Wow Kutt. Wow. After all the effort he put into this movie this is the attitude you are going to take? Weren't you the one bitching that you had to go to a trade show to see it? Seriously, how much time do you spend every day thinking up new ways to be an anti-social, narcissistic asshole? Maybe if you spent that time thinking about glass you might be capable of producing more than just one shape.
Seriously, I think I speak for way more than me when I say go away. If this is the response you are going to take towards a really important moment in our industries history, then you clearly don't deserve/care to be a part of it. Just go away. Please.
[Also, if this gets me an infraction I'll wear it proudly. Fuck this Canadian metal-huffer and his negative-Nancy attitude.]

If I'm going to own this movie, I want a hard copy. Slinger should've had hard copies available as soon as it was available on other mediums through the actual website which needs to be updated anyway. Call me old school or whatever. digital copies tend to vanish some how. I never feel the digital copies are worth the money. quick rip off for itunes or whoever doesn't want to actually print it out. And if Kut wants to have that opinion, let him, who cares. you all get so wrapped up in whatever little drama you can produce. Stop talking about respect if you can't respect others thoughts and opinions. go work!!!!!

The movie's great... it tells the story in a perfect way to help people totally clueless begin to understand what. the glass pipe scene is all about. The historic parts in the beginning are more coherent and effective than the later parts, in my opinion (I've seen the film 5 times, mainly in very good theaters in Austin for SXSW).
Music kills throughout... for months I've found myself thinking of a song, then realize it's from Slinger's film. Sell the soundtrack!
Yeh the ball did get dropped on the hard copy, but after all the $ and work he dumped into just producing it, i can imagine why he didnt want to have to worry about all the stuff involved with producing a hard copy just yet.
Plus this will allow him to re-coop some of his expenses w/out having to shell out additional to get it on a dvd and into ppls hands.
I bought it on itunes mainly just to support the guy's hard work. I know a lot of us have watched him struggle to get this thing finished and I couldnt be happier that he produced such a well-made film that is being received so positively by the community.
ANd to the ppl talking stupid shit like 'just waiting to pirate it'... man... i understand thats the common idea in today''s society, but still... this is one of our own working his ass off to produce something that will hopefully work to A) inform the general public of what we actually do with our abilities and B) get more publicity out there for anyone involved w making pipes. If you have a disrespectful comment such as this, just keep that dumb shit to urself. It doesnt help the environment of the forum, nor does the wave of flames that is bound to come from it.
Congrats on a job well done Slinger!

I'm sure the hard copy had to do with the fact that film festivals will not accept a movie that is out on DVD already. So, in order to the film fest circuit, there could be no DVD.
Who needs a DVD anyway? Streaming is pretty much the only way to go these days. Available on our phones, tvs, game consoles, and everything else. The production costs of a DVD are hardly worth it. Plus, as soon as it's on DVD, people start ripping, burning, and uploading on pirate sites. He can protect it better, and not have to do the leg work for getting DVD's made. Sure he could've just burnt a bunch of copies on blanks, but they would not look professional. So, I feel he probably did the smart thing.
I guess if I ever blow up my house I'll still have my iTunes! I'm too young to be old-school, but I like tangible. Although, that's a good point Dave.

Kudos to all involved. I have watched it 3 times so far. Once with my mom and 82yr old grandma.
They are convinced that Bob Snodgrass must test all his products personally and Jerome Baker needs to wash his mouth out with soap. They really liked seeing the progression of the art and were blown away by some of the pieces in the film. They liked when Snic took that electroformed piece out and their jaws were on the ground seeing Buck's ship.
I cant wait to show it to more people.
HAHa someone should have written the JErome Baker guy a script. Maybe he would have added something of value to the doc...

Hearing about the history straight from Bob was such a treat. I had a big smile ear to ear through the whole film (except maybe the headhunter/ pipedreams segment)
I almost fell out of my chair when I discovered I'd talked to Jerome Baker before and NEVER FUCKING KNEW IT

Big up$ Slinger. I caught the film in Detroit. So fucking good. It really solidifies a timeline for pipemakers. Jason Harris bit cracked me up. Bob's segment is priceless. This really opens up public awareness above and beyond pipe users. This is bigger than big time, this is huge time.

No doubt, there are at least 10 hilarious quotable lines in the movie. Ask Pogo for the best ones.
Oh, and I'll give a rod of Nile to anyone who can transcribe what Dan K. was saying about how New Jersey is a little whatever for 'someone from Keezie's (?) backyard'.. Whose backyard? What's that all about?

great work Slinger! thank you for putting it together and for all the artists who were willing to share their stories and faces as it seems like this must still be a little scary from a legal standpoint. It was really great to get the history and see some totally awesome ART! Definitely agree with the statements that someday, hopefully soon, this kind of work will get the respect it deserves in the "art" world.
What I respect above all else is that not only are these pipes great art, but they are fully functional as well, to me that makes it a cut above just beautiful sculpture with no purpose other that to look cool.

What he means by Ken Kesey's backyard is Oregon, but the comment has a cultural connotation to it as well, meaning not only does he come from the physical place where Kesey is from, but also the same culture/mind-set...
Dvd and blu ray coming in August, should be dropping it first at the AGE show Aug 12 in Vegas, they will NOT be available before that date, so if you are jonesing watch a digital version, thanks all for the support, a film is nothing with out and audience, i made this for everyone in this community!

Amazing film. Been sharing it with everyone I can. Going to have my gramma watch it...she is already amazed by what we do. I could watch it over and over. I cried both times in the theatre. Cheesy maybe (my crying I mean) but it moved me in a serious way. I have been uninspired as shit lately. Just thinking about the movie produced some nifty work during my limited torch time.
And Kut, I get that you think you are being funny, but if no one laughs, you are doing it wrong. You have been rude about this more than once. It's gone way beyond getting old. Show some respect...please. Cool if you have an attitude about some of us, but this film is a seriously valuable gift to our community and the makers deserve respect, period.

TBH the first time I read his message I thought he said he had purchased, and he was perplexed as to how he could watch it on his TV. I feel that anyone that pays for a copy of something deserves to have a backup of that material, and be able to watch it in any way they want. I am not distributing this freely and will likely purchase several hard copies for friends and family upon it's release. Thanks for your concern though.

I already mentioned that I am going to be buying multiple hard copies upon release... Anyway lets get back to talking about this glorious masterwork that Mr Slinger has bestowed upon mankind. I love every single minute. Great editing, soundtrack, interviews, imagery. Love the way it lays out the narrative of the subculture in a cohesive manner. A progression of events that has been shrouded in mystery for many. Really shed alot of light on things for me. He has given us something that we can show the world and be proud of. I also love of the Tubman HD segments really tie it all together into a nice package. Bravo!

Here's a tip for ya: Don't ever come to a community of people and say you're going to or have already ripped a copy of a flick that community supports. Whether you say you're gonna buy a copy, not gonna hand copies out, whatever, just mentioning you're rippin copies is straight disrespect to the very community that made that movie happen.

I can see how you might feel that way. Was not my intent to disrespect anyone. Was trying to help someone watch it in the comfort of their living room with their friends and family rather than huddled around a computer monitor. I don't feel like I did anything unethical since I have purchased a rental once and will be buying several copies in the future. Hopefully we can continue to discuss the movie rather than the fact that I put my download onto a dvd until its full release. Pretty insignificant really.

A rental is just that. A rental. Isn't going up to Blockbuster, renting a movie, and ripping it onto a DVD still considered pirating? And then just turn around an act like you didn't just shit on slinger's troth (reference anybody?)
Looks like a sick ass movie. Only seen the trailer on youtube. Is there any way to preorder the DVD?

I can watch Blockbuster rentals on my tv, and I can also purchase hard copies of all of their movies if I wish to. If I were putting my rip up for download on some torrent site I think your point would be valid, but I was ripping it for my own personal use until I can acquire the real deal. And I will be paying for several of them. I shat upon noone.

You do know that the fair use argument only remotely applies to things you actually purchased, right? Renting it and making a copy would be theft. In this case it's made even worse by doing it to someone in this community.
And the "I'm going to buy several copies" nonsense makes about as much sense as me walking into a Ferrari dealership, taking a car for test drive and telling them I'm going to just keep it without paying, but I plan to make diamonds fall out of my ass, and I'll be back later in the week to purchase three more cars with those.

Bought last night, and now have on my PS3. As soon as it had completed downloading, a heard a "pshshsssshhhhhhhzzzzzzttttttttttt-----ding!" and a big cloud of smoke billowed around my PS3, when the smoke cleared...I had a PS4! That movie was so good, it evolved my playstation!
That being said, so glad I watched it. Best $15 dollars I've spent in a while. I will likely watch it again tonight as well since I bought it. I'll also be buying a hardcopy when/wherever I can.
Slinger and everyone else involved, great work! I can't wait to start indoctrinating my friends and family with this! The film was amazing. I loved the chronological sense to it, the way it showed the evolution of the culture, and its path from underground, to further underground. Loved all the interviews, the soundtrack was perfect too! The OPD section was just long enough, and in the right spot. The interviews all felt very personal, like I was there for it. Sometimes interviews come across as such....will filmed interviews. But that's not what I want to see, and I didn't in this film.
I could go on and on...
Again, awesome job everyone, I'm now even prouder to push bowls!!

Wow! Watched this last week and will be showing my family this weekend.
It's so hard to explain pipemaking to people sometimes without coming off like a hippy talking about pipe dreams. People just don't know how complex the pipe scene has become, or that there even is a pipe scene. This film is a great way to let people what we're doing.

I was particularly impressed by the editing. I know Mickelson is for the most part decent to the pipers, but his comments toward them at the end of his bit seemed a bit sour and were even kind of hurtful (Why NOT make it a pipe Robert, poke poke) followed up PERFECTLY by a great comment from Jason Lee.
BTW, Sling, will there be a $oundtrack release? Dug the music, and the way it was edited in with the video.

RAM's opinion has evolved over the years. He wasn't always a fan.
Julian
07-18-2012, 08:48 PM
He was hardly opposed to pipe makers, though and has long been quite influential. When I took a couple of his classes in 2000, his attitude was basically what he described at first... that the hippie thing is dead, and why would people want to listen to the Grateful Dead and make pot pipes? He groaned when Dave put on the first GD album, and said he'd listened to way more than enough of that in the 70s.
I certainly never heard him act scornful or opposed to pipes like many people in the art glass community - or make us feel unwelcome in the way that some of the entrenched art community folks have done. But, he did encourage pipe makers do broaden their horizons as far as being willing to make items that aren't pipes. Or, not always make something a pipe just because.... which is kind of funny, now, of course because RAM is basically making the same items as ever, and making them pipes. At least it's not out of habit or a lack of imagination, though.

in the 80s and 90s they sold dual cassette vcrs and boomboxes just so you could dub other cassettes. i used to dub every single movie i rented for years. as far as i know its not illegal to dub them, as long as youre not profiting from selling the dubbed copy.

I got to watch the movie tonight and I was completely blown away. The production and content were both excellent. I have it on On Demand until tomorrow night and I'll definitely watch it again.
As a collector I think I now have a much better idea of what the movement is all about and a much deeper appreciation for what all you people are doing. I have been completely aware for awhile now that pipe art IS the cutting edge of glass art, but I just didn't understand the total scope it all. I was dumbfounded by the variety of shapes, colors, techniques and forms being made. I really makes my want to unload my marble collection and switch to functional. Damn... those pieces are just beautiful!
I also completely agree that those pipes belong in mainstream galleries, museums' glass collections and some day the Smithsonian. NPR should talk about it and PBS should play that movie. The only problem is that the mainstream has ruined and sodomized a lot other cool things that were once underground. I'd hate to someday see handmade glass pipes on a shelf in Target, on HSN or featured in its very own reality show. Maybe it's best if not everybody knows about it.

Ya know Artists like Slinger actually pay to advertise their film on these networks, Itunes, Amazon, PSN. He took a huge chance promoting his film like this. Pipe making has a limited audience and I don't think outside of the glass community their will be many supporters of the art. This is a huge deal and supporting it is putting money back into the community.

I'm a bartender as well as a lampworker, and I got a chance to watch this movie in Eugene when I went to the DFO. Being a bartender I'm use to talking to the public. Albeit it is Eugene but the regulars at the bar we had the showing at loved the movie and they sat with us and watched the entire film even the staff enjoyed it.
I do a lot of promoting my glass at my bar, and old and young alike are intrigued by glass pipes I see a group of hunters come in and show them a pic of RAM's guns and there jaws drop. Glass is amazing and everyone knows it some just don't know it yet. Thanx to slinger they will soon enough.

I dig this.
Just saw the movie today and I loved every minute of it. Tons of respect to the guys back in the Snodgrass revolution constantly re-inventing the medium. I love how they compare it to hip hop and skateboarding numerous times. Both things that in their youth were constantly pushing the boundaries of their field with each new album or trick respectively.
I also loved seeing all the contemporary pieces and pausing it frequently to rub one out. I have no idea how these guys handle these giant sculptural pieces of glass with the ease of spinning a marble.
Can anyone help me figure out who made a certain piece though? It's a large bub with a bunch of black/"fire" themed reversal sections and these amazingly struck Amber Purple (or similar) horns that were holding a bic lighter in the picture.
Anywho, GREAT work to Slinger and all involved in this project. I love the constant push for acceptance of pipes as a legitimate form of art. I'm no artist but I've seen enough mind-blowing pieces to know that there's quite a few out there.

i assume slinger charges a specific rate, which is most likely the same no matter the location. the base prices in those 3 links are all different. it appears to me as if OTHER people are making a few extra coins simply because they can. it's not my pennies i'm wondering about, it the retailers who are increasing the prices that i question.
