I have a friend who is an art major at SCAD and she wants me to try and make her some glass chopsticks. My first attempt was just miserable and I have a feeling that I'm just going about it in the wrong way. I'm pretty new to glass blowing and I was hoping that some of you more experienced glass blowers could throw a few tips my way. Thanks in advance!

my guess would be trying to pull a sort of thick stringer... you couldnt get much of a design that way though. Maby get some striking glass and get some nice reducing highlites in there after youve pulled it?

I would take two 8-10 mm boro rods heat them up and taper into a square shape using my paddle

Have you ever used chopsticks that have been warped? They suuuuuck....
My experience with pulling 2 rods into nice perfectly stragiht 10 inch tapers from 8mm to a point has been frustrating. It's do-able, just tricky.

I would suggest starting with a 7 or 8mm rod. Heat up the end 2 inches with a brushy flame and pull that amount into a taper.

Or, fire polish the ends of two 7mm rods and call 'em chopsticks.

I've been kicking this same idea around in my head for a bit (Mark Lammi just posted some he did, btw. Maybe he'll chime in). If you want to make out of a ribbon twist or a latti or something, I'd say marver like crazy. If you marver your thick cane into a taper before pulling it down, try and get the whole shabang equally hot and to as much of it in one pull as possible, then tweek and marver back to an even cross section, may work out.
Of course, no big successes here yet...

I've done them a few times, not the greatest but they work. I made some dna twist cane and slowly pulled it out from the center.
