Hey guys. So thanks to the awesomeness of a fellow board member i am getting a almost complete setup. I need to get glasses though. Now i am looking online and i see alot of the ones on sites are similar to welding glasses. Does anyone on this site use welding glasses or goggles? I ask because they are about half the price but they have the same tint rating as lampworking goggles. I just want to see if i buy welding glasses will they work for lampworking. Thanks for any help if not im gonna buy some on sundance just want to compare since i have some funds in my paypal now thanks to ebay.

welding glasses are dark enough but they do not filter out everything (they'll not filter IR or UV...i forget which).
you could use welding clip ons over regular didi's.
i use these and at $65 they're a hell of a deal.

Q: What is a proper pair of flameworking glasses cheaper than?

A: A new set of eyes.

Don't fuck around or go cheap when it comes to eye safety.

I understand. I dont want to fuck around with it at all lol. I just didnt know if lampworking glasses were just welding glasses with a different label.

Depending on how big your torch is, get at least shade 3 ace ir glasses. If you still get too much light coming through (I use a redmax and it's plenty dark), get a pair of shade 5s as well. Either way you need shade 3s or you'll be squinting like a mofo if you try detail work.

I've let people play around at first with welding shades and they ended up using welding shades for several months...honestly I told them they needed legit shades the whole time and once they got em they say the difference was immediately obvious.

welding shades protect from uv and ir but don't filter the yellow sodium flare so you can't see what you are doing very well. I don't know if the sodium flare itself is bad, I don't think so...but even still do you want to be able to clearly see or be guessing at what's going on? it's worth the extra $

another good idea...get didy's for detail work, clear, and avoid dark colors. once you are more in to glass grab some shade 5s
