Are these made of all Aluminum?

Good question! I was talking to a machinist the other day who said that lathes made out of aluminum are a horrible idea (will eventually bend or curve due to constant torque). He said something about aircraft grade aluminum being alright though. I really have no idea on the matter and would like to hear some opinions from people who know more about this considering there are new lathes coming out that are constructed out of aluminum..

They quoted me 10k not 8.5k. I would like to see videos and know it works for years before I dropped anything like that

^i talked to these guys about a month ago, quoted me at "10.5- 11K, were still working that out"......

He told me they had nine prototypes, constructed the same, that had seen full time use for about a year with no calibration issues.

Site says a solid steel bed, i dont know about the rest.

Said its modeled after a litton hsj

These arent machinist lathes and the "torque"is almost non existent seeing you can stop one with your hands if you were brave enough to do so. alot of the ideals behind building machinist equipment with rigidity issues and so on are thrown out the window when it comes to glass blowing lathes as is the super precision aspect of holding tight tolerances that a machinist does seeing NO glass holds any kind of serious tolerance. as far as cast iron Vs. 6065 t6 or 7075 t6 aluminumim almost every case of measurment of strength tensile torsional shear blah blah blah the aluminum is far greater. Why have glass lathes been made out of cast iron for so long? because machinist made them to mimic what they know from machinist lathes. Litton makes cast iron lathes along with aluminum head and tail stock lathes(art lathe) and have as far as i know and heard no issues with them other than small bore size. engines in cars use to ALWAYS be made from cast iron because it was the norm and its just kept repeating itself now something like 75-80% of most cars and light trucks come with aluminum blocked motors things evolve with the advance of technology and there are always the doubters of new technology that dont want to leave behind old faithful. these new lathes look pretty nice and i like the slim line profile chucks. Nice job guys.

Yeah those "art" lathes are garbage. So is this notion that glass lathes don't need to be as precise, sounds like an excuse really. Glass lathes are made out of cast iron so they can last the heat used on them for OVER 50 YEARS! Why do you think these cast iron ones from the 60's and 70's sell USED for what all these rag tag lathes are being sold for brand new. Bottom line is with Litton you get over 80 years of "testing" and "experience" building these things. Do you want the jalopy or the ferrari?

I got quoted $11K. Sounds like there's some room to bargain...

edit: btw, since I'm sure these guys are reading this thread: Put a price on the web site. We have the technology. The only other folks who do crap like this are car dealers, and we all know they are scum.

Hello everyone, this is SEM Industries. I apologize for the delay in response but we have been overwhelmed with emails and phone calls. We were originally going to start the price off at $10,500 but we have decided to make them affordable for everyone. The price will be $8,750. Please understand I know there are a lot of opinions out there and I respect them. It took me two years to develop this machine. I wanted something to be similar to the HSJ, but not at the cost of the HSJ price. We have gone through an extreme amount of testing as well as intentionally dropping them to test for calibration and durability.

The lathe consists of all steel and all steel parts. The only aluminum on the machine is just the tailstock and headstock housings to minimize weight. I am very proud to introduce our lathes to the market as well as our glass community. The Model 5100 has been designed for longevity and durability. Our current customers as well as my own facility, currently using 7, are extremely satisfied and are actually preferred over the Littons. That being said, I would like to add that I personally own quite a few Littons and I have nothing negative to say except for the price tag. They are becoming harder to find and are increasing in price. It was time to create a lathe that was affordable for everyone with the same quality. The Model 5100 is built with already proven methods. No one reinvented the wheel, we simply used parts that were designed to last a lifetime (i.e. chains, sprockets, gears, etc.). These machines are absolutely incredible and for the price they are unmatched. This project started in 2010 and after all the hard work and testing we are very proud of Model 5100. We hope you enjoy.

We apologize for the website going down yesterday. The bandwidth was exceeded due to massive hits on our website. The problem is fixed. Feel free to email me at americanlathes@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns. Please try to remember there are always opinions and that's all they are, opinions. Facts are facts and it is as simple as that. So please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for choosing SEM Industries.

Where are you out of? What other products have you put out in the glass industry? Is this the Blast Shield lathe?

Riley
01-16-2013, 07:15 PM
This is in Phoenix. Guy blows glass, this is not Daryl or acroduster, or associated with blast shield at all. As far as I know Daryl knows about this company but he and his guy are still moving along on their aluminum lathe, that two months ago wasn't done.

Iv been talking with ppl about these machines a lot. I wish I had one already to review for everyone, especially at this price point. Anyhow I'm supposed to get up and at least run these In the next month or two and I'll surely have a review.

SEM industries is owned by my buddy who has been extremly dedicated to his glass blowing business where he runs lathes all day errday, for the past 8+ years. We talked about the design of the machine for an hour yesterday, and I'm very excited for these to come out! These machines will definantly not be "jalopys" and I'm sure all the rave reviews will hit the scene very soon...

Good Job homie!!

I talked with Sean extensively about the lathe. It sounds great. and the passion he conveyed was great as well. My lathe is scheduled to be at my shop at the end of may. I cant wait. This company is going to be great. I just talked with sean and he sold seven lathes in austin to some of the big name guys there. And they did a high production film with sean and the lathe. Also heard he will be at the austin glassroots on 4/20/13.

The lathe looks good what kinds of fire have you put on the fire carriage?

Are you going to supply or manufacture planetary chucks for the lathe?

Why don't you demo one at AGI this year call Tom Doner for info.

are these lathes direct drive or elecrtonically synched? the one that acroduster posted looked like it was electronically synched, if thats the case 8G seems a little steep

Yes, please give me a call if you would like to show one of your lathes at AGI. We'll have a bunch of people here that would love to try it, and you'll get lots of feedback throughout the year. My phone number is 724-791-2100

I hope to hear from you... Tom

Just off the phone with the man here, I've been told I'll be one if the first to use the new mini lathes coming out early next year. There are so many things being offered on, and with these machines, that I will share when I'm green lighted to do so, but can allude to the unheard of never before offered options.

This man is my friend and to see what he has done, coming from blowing glass and selling through a mutual distributor, that its been nothing less than incredible to witness. The future is bright for this company and for the industry because these machines aren't being built on dated standards, they are being built for us, by us.

Stay tuned for extensive videos and reviews!
