Ok guys I want to move on up to Boro how ever DAMN!!! Color is expensive so with that in mind can any one give me some advice on what would be a good start to buy in glass and good suppliers. I do not plan on making pipes mostly mibs, pendants, and eventually when I upgrade my torch goblets and the like.

Any and all advice is appreciated

Liam

You can get seconds much cheaper than first and for starting off thats pretty good stuff to play around with also boro color goes ALOT farther it seems than soft glass color :)

Wale will send you I think half a rod of every color they have for like $40 or so... (don't quote me on that price, it's been a while since I ordered from them.) ...good for experimenting, figuring out what colors you like to work with...or what colors like to work with you, as the case may be. :D

when I started with boro, I got the Glass alchemy 20 top color pack for 20 bucks. color is expensive but clear is quite cheap. picking up 5 feet of half inch clear is only a few bucks and will go a lonnggg way, works great for mibs and pendants and that kinda stuff.

using clear as a base is a great way to save cash

Yeah go with seconds and odds, and maybe a sample pack so you can figure out which colors you like.

Or you could buy a 5 pound sack of Northstar shorts from us and get to try a lot of colors. They are $55
+ shipping $8.65 We also sell a 2 pound container for $25.00 Shorts from them are just the ends of their first 's as they cut them to size. We sell a lot of these and no complaints

i dont segest secounds due to inconsitancys... if you know the color and how to work it thats one thing but if you get a bad secound rod you will probably not know... and probably urn into troubles.

sample packs are the way to go

right now i know vapor glass has there momka sampler at like 45 bucks compared to 75

sunray got the hook up on NS , and you just missed the GA sale , and you could probably check around at like generations they might have a free sample pack of prisicion color laying around its good stuff.

I would disagree and suggest that seconds are fine to use, especially for someone just learning. All you'd need to do is cut off the pieces of rods that have "stones" or "seeds" in them. I to this day use seconds for my production work and the color looks just as good or better than pieces made with firsts.

You just have to know which part of the rod not to use, which is pretty simple to spot a seed.

if I were you I would buy ODDS. seconds only if it is an awesome deal AND a good color thats not likley to crack....besides the seeds, it is also not always mixed as well so you will have to re-mix that stuff for certain techs.......unless you dont care about inconsistant colors.

wait around for sales and you can save a lot....

on ebay ABR sometimes sells 5# bundles of odds or seconds. I just got onyx and egypt white sand odds for ~$10/lb

Check out Generations for good deals on seconds and odds... Kristian's always done right by me and I've never had any problems with the seconds, probably partly because I make beads and pendants.

Something that nobody has mentioned yet...

Yes, color is expensive. But one way around that is to use a lot of clear. Whether clear over color or color over clear. Many of the colored pendants I do are about 90% clear, but you never see the clear. There are also many other ways to make your color go farther, so in turn your money goes farther.

I haven't ever used seconds, so I can't comment on that...

when i comes to color i started using ones that i could work and not have a bad outcome like cobalt, onyx, ruby, etc...don't know if you want to use any crayons yet i know it took me a bit to work them and not get bubbles and such...just a thought

yes.

Also, cadmiums give trouble to boro beginners but if you work softglass you already know how to work things softly. or so I've been told. (I've never touched softglass)

But people tell me it's easier to go from soft to boro than boro to soft.

sample packs, full lenghts if possible is a great way to go and to experiment with different glass.

Go for odds, not seconds. Seconds can be a crappily colored batch, whereas odds are just misshapen. I actually prefer odds to firsts (if I go to the supplier myself and can hand-pick them) because I like to be able to get fat and skinny pieces without pulling a lot of stringers. I can usually find most colors in anything from 4 to 8 mil, and I've found some chunks (though they're the exception, not the rule) of 18 mil of a few colors.

Get sample packs. You can get them for GA, NS, Momka, Precision & Draconis for sure. You can also get frit sample packs. If you're making mostly pendants, you have months of color from nothing but sample packs. I especially recommend the frit samples.
