Hey guys so I have a question. A local shop owner by me is wanting to sell me a Carlisle CC burner torch for $500. To me that seems to be a good deal but I'm still semi new to the game so I'm trying to get some opinions from the glass guru's. I couldn't really find a page where I could find a retail price on the Torch just some info. He sent me a pic of it and all he just didn't really know much info on it. So I was just trying to see if the Carlisle CC burner was its own Torch or what and how good of a torch is it. I have a friend who has a CC and to me they look like the same torch so that's why I'm asking g to see if what he has is just a Carlisle CC which to me would be a amazing deal at $500. Thanks for any help an info on this torch.

Can you post the pic. There are a few cc look alikes, and with a pic can get a better idea of the value.

the CC is a good torch for sure, the options you see on Mountain Glass reflect what type of mount it has (ball and post or rack and pinion) also they are available with a #3 or #5 centerfire.

if it is indeed a CC and in good condition, 500 is a good price

If the torch is in really good condition they normally go for around 8 or 9 hundred ...just depending on condition.
I bought mine from a guy ...it had just had a refurbish from Carlisle and it has the rack and pinion base. I paid $950 for it
and i love it... when i got it i was just starting out in glass and i think it was a very good choice.
There is nothing i want to do that i feel i was limited by the torch. In fact i dont think ive ever cranked
it all the way up even doing a 2.5" marble.

The CC is a great torch and I feel the hands down winner for the $500 - $800 price range (used market range). Really the next torch that dethrones it is a phantom (which could honestly still be semi-debatable) but can't be picked up for less than $1100 in seemingly any condition. Great beginner torch, as they are quite versatile and built like tanks. I have seen numerous 30 year old carlisles that run like new.

Main problem with them is that damn premix center, it is loud and treats colors and dichro like shit, learn to work towards the back of the flame for sensitive stuff (good habit to work further out anyway). The CC also tends to be more reducing, unless the user actively makes an effort to keep it oxidizing. It will also produce carbon on the face, more so if you are running it incorrectly. It is important to try to keep the carbon off, as it leads to face destruction. Wire brush that bitch between sessions, and keep the face clean while torching with a glass rod.

So yeah, if it is in good condition that is a great deal, definitely at the bottom end of the used value. You could flip it on here for a quick $700 no problem.

It really all depends on the face... if the face of the burner is in good shape then i would think you have a great torch.
But if you get it you will for sure need to make yourself a water cooling coil. Pretty easy to do.
If you can check the valves that would be nice to make sure none are leaky and wont turn completely off.
i donno if the guy would let you try it out... maybe you could pay for it with the understanding that
you can return it if you find something major wrong.

Yea he's gonna send me pics of the face in the morning. He owns a local headshop I have shopped at for years so he's a stand up Guy. I am sure he would let me return it if it didn't work. I will have to look into the water cool thing to.

Also make sure a cleaning wire didn't get stuck in a port and get welded in...Then if ya like it, tell him you REALLY like it but all you have is $400-....

judging by the amount of carbon on the side of the cannon....and no torch face pics sent (fishy?), it might be in need of a serious cleaning.
that being said, with a little work (or a trip to carlisle) it'll work like new again.

Would it be possible for you to see it running or get him to take pictures of it running? You want to make sure that all the jets are working and you want to make sure it isn't leaking or premixing (don't be embarrassed to smell around the valves and listen for loud pops). If there are a couple of wonky jets, you may be able to clean them out yourself. I have posted tips and tricks on how to clear out carbon blockages in other threads. You might call Carlisle and ask them how much they would charge to do a thorough cleaning and ask how much repairing the valves would cost (or ask about the price of parts if you feel you can replace them yourself), just so you will know in case you need to negotiate the purchase price a little. $500 is a good price, but not if the torch is going to need additional hundreds of dollars in repairs.

Really examine the face of the torch. You want to check for tube erosion and clogged ports. Discoloration is not necessarily indicative of a problem, but eroded tubes are. Depending on how far back they are eroded, Carlisle might be able to true up the face for you. When you call to get the price for a cleaning, you might ask them what they would charge for that, too, just to get an idea.

Even if one port is blocked and it leaks a little bit it's probably worth $500.

getting new valves put on is a couple hundred bucks, an if cared for last decades (if not cared for last days)

I would ask to see it run, unless you trust the guy... I personally wouldn't sell a used torch I felt was damaged in any way without saying something. I wouldn't sell one that was unsafe in any way period.
