Hi everyone,

How to color a clear glass entirely such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, etc.?

What chemical substance to make a clear glass colorful?

Is it the food coloring?

What is the process and how?

Do this food coloring be mixed when the glass is melt?

Or will the food coloring be mixed with the water first before then next mixed with the molten glass?

Thank you

yes just go to the supermarket and get the standard food coloring. melt a gather of clear glass, marver into a trapazoid shape and then add several drops of food coloring. then heat and mix/twist until the color is evenly distributed, being careful to keep the trapazoid shape.

A drill can help with the mixing process.

yes but make sure to use the large expensive titanium nitride coated bits...

If I were a bartender in a western film, I'd be pulling protective shutters around the barware right now.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and always try the search first before posting for a month or so. Curiosity is a wonderful thing, but some suppositions will bring down scorn and derision.

Best of luck!

I mix mine with vinegar. Like easter . When you dunk it in it also tempers the glass.

Man, I don't understand censorship. You obviously intended one of a few "vulgar" words. Is it the collection of letters you find offensive? It's clearly not the meaning behind then that is offensive, otherwise you wouldn't use them in any form, censored or otherwise.

I don't mean this as a personal attack in the slightest. I just have a problem with the concept of "bad" words.

shawnette
04-18-2013, 06:25 PM
Dude, I spent 9 years in the Army in a male dominated field, then another 10 years working with engineers (mostly male). Bad words don't offend me. It's just that my mama taught me better.

I wonder if LarryC just posted that to draw the heat off the new guy. How very altruistic! Because, surely, someone with the vast glass experience Larry has knows that bead makers know how glass is colored, since they usually have to explain it umpteen million times to everyone who looks at their beads.

TlkQ
04-18-2013, 06:41 PM
I guess my question is what's better about it? If I type F**K that's ok. But if I write Fuck it's not good? The meaning behind it is clearly still the same. So it's the collection of letters you're momma taught you better than using? Or the word and the meaning behind it? Or is it all fucking silly and words only carry what power you give to them?

harsh replies to a simple question...

nope, none of you were every young, beginners, lacking in master glass making skills... curious, not thinking about using the search function... nope, and all of you speak English so perfectly that you can criticize this guy? I think he's got balls of steel coming in here to find out more, posting amongst the likes of you all.

9/10 for creativity in the first post, and a definite 10/10 for "No."

I'm still stuck on food coloring. It's hard to tell if he's serious, or just messing around. He might be better off saying what he's trying to do to get advice, or maybe just pay someone on here to do it as it would save everyone time and money. The time people invested in replying already could have probably been used to do what he's trying to do. That and $60 might have already gotten the job done.

UmaJulz
04-18-2013, 06:56 PM
Well, I guess that if English isn't the first language, the results from a simple search could be overwhelming, thus asking what looks like a ridiculous question might just be the fastest and easiest path... but like I said, posting amongst the likes of youall, heheh, balls of steel.

his other posts are good too... but sneaky, cuz we still don't know what he wants to make, just that the wheels are turning...

harsh replies to a simple question...

No offense, but I wouldn't really walk into a college bio class and ask what a cell wall is. Or what photosynthesis was. A little self motivation and mental toughness/determination can't hurt anyone.

That being said, search about "blow ins, stuff and puffs" "how glass is colored" "colored glass composition" and last but not least," colored rods"

Colored rods used in conjunction with a "blow in" might be helpful. This might lead to more questions for you it seems though.

Maybe try "glass enamels"

But seeing as how I'm not in the BLM nor am I a baller in general I have no experience with enamels. ;-)

Most people wouldn't, but if they did, I seriously doubt the professor would ridicule them for seeking answers from an "expert" on the subject. Yes, my original reaction was "WTH? Who asks that???" but I would never have said that, nor would I ridicule a person who just wants information. I'd either answer the question or point them in the right direction to find the answer. (Unless it's a friend of mine. Then I show no mercy! I laugh at them all the time, lol!)

The thing that chafes my hide is when one artist implies superiority over another just by their choice of medium. Some bead makers are incredibly talented! And although I do prefer the challenge of working with soft glass over boro, probably a good 98% of my doesn't involve a mandrel of any sort. I'm not a fan of beads. I just like playing with fire.

why the fuck not walk into a Bio class and ask about a cell wall? Logical question to ask where you know you can trust the source and get a full and complete answer.

In a perfect world it would also be logical to go to a glass forum and ask how glass gets colored, sadly this is not a perfect world and the OP got some pretty snarky answers.

Okay. so if this is a real post... It is the best one i have seen.. OP .. None of us (most of us) do not make our own color from "batch" ... We buy color from a flameworking supply company. Making your own glass, and making your own color from elements is very bad for your health. Nor is it simple. Science.

That was why I tried to offer some search terms without beating the person up. My point was simply if you have been to high school, you probably learned about cell walls in your BASIC entry level bio class, thus going to a college level bio class without the knowledge of what a cell wall is and you find it necessary to ask such a question, you would probably be told to get up to speed before wasting 150 peoples time with a question that could be answered in an hour of general internet searching. Research, find the questions you really need to be asking the pros. I think most big name artist would be slightly annoyed to have someone pay 600 dollars for a class and then ask, "how do you get the color in there."

Sorry, I'm just trying to explain my own rational to why I usually read more than ask questions on here. Almost ALWAYS I find the info or a direction to head without having to create a thread for people to derail and small talk on because they are apathetic to my inexperience. Certainly not trying to be rude to either the OP or anyone else; piper, beader, or otherwise.

Of course it would be logical but when Webster gives you a dictionary with the definition to a word, do you choose to not read the answer for your self and find the reference in the book because you can call the publisher or editor and ask him a question that was answered by the existence of the text itself? No, I guess I just feel like all this is typed and recorded, not verbal conversations, thus it is a searchable, loosely categorized database.

And I'm not tryin to argue, I just want to be understood. The more of these questions that are asked, and the more these "don't be rude, why can't you jus answer the question" post just muddy up the database of info with meaningless convo that's unrelated to glass. The more these have to be fielded, the more you have to freakin search just to find something valuable in all the "politically correct ways you should have responded post."

If there was one thread that had the answers and info needed then searching wouldn't result in a dozen of these threads of back and forth crap that beg the questions that are then asked because if I had to read through anymore nonsense I'd wanna take the easy route too.

I guess by the time some folks find this forum they are already tired of their general search engine... So.... Ehh whatevs. It's 4/20 so...El Fin
