View Full Version : Do you use some semblance of a ventilation system?
Apparently there are bunches of glassblowers out there working without vent. I find this hard to believe. Do you have some semblance of ventilation setup? Or do you use a respirator instead? Or maybe you just free-ball it and go with nada.

This would be a good poll.
I currently use a ventilation box. In the past, I have used a hood with baffles and a box fan in a window. All of these options are better, in my opinion, than the ventilation system used in the studio where I took my first lessons: high ceilings.

Here's what I use. Sometimes I feel a little hot and light headed. That usually means its time to change the batteries. Gotta upgrade soon, batteries are expensive!!

This reminded me:
Once upon a time, there was a user (he was a member of the old EZ Board and another glass site, and I think he made the suggestion on the old EZ Board) who suggested a snorkel set-up. For real - breathe through a tube.

I would rep Quinn for his response to that, but I have to give out more reps, first.

I am a nihilist, so I typically wish I could breath Freon on the regular. I don't use ventelation, I use a combo of a makeshift mask... and hopes and dreams. here is a picture of me with my new age mask, it will shock your culture. I bet you are all using it by this weekend.

Seriously I use this monster, ~4,000 cfm. 20" duct work on the inside. Plus I have one in the roof of the warehouse.

old stove hood with short 8" duct to a 1000 cfm fan mounted on the outside wall, it's kind of loud, but very effective.

That is a beautiful set up Kim.
Thank you, my husband built it and tiled it for me. :)
Currently, the exhaust goes through a hole at the top of the box and through a duct to a window insert fan set-up. The plans are to hardline the exhaust up through the roof or through the wall and install a more powerful fan. Once the new fan is in place, I can remove the plexi-glass front (I have that there for better fume capture). It's fine for what I'm doing now, but I prefer to have more space around me.
This set-up is in what amounts to a 4 car garage with very tall ceilings. I use an enclosed box like this so I can exchange a smaller volume of air. I live a very cold climate, so that is important to me.

Attic fans are mid ghetto, if you do any calculations.
Stove fans are ghetto.
And thinking the silver fume is all there is to be worried about is the dictionary definition of ignorance.

hell yeah!! glad to know i'm mid ghetto, and here i was thinking i was only regular ghetto.
heck, if u do the calcs on my 7' x 10' x 8' shop, withe my home-made(ghetto) hood, and my make-up air coming from directly behind me, using that 1550 cfm attic fan~ i might even have a setup that could be called ghetto-fabulous lol
-no disrespect jr23, all of you(on talkglass.com) have helped me know what i need to be at least mid-ghetto, thanks
Oh and for safety's sake i also use a $14 full face shield from H.F. when i fume

jr23,
If you don't mind me asking; what exactly makes a Gable or "attic" fan "mid-ghetto"?

Doesn't that just create a little dead pocket in front of your face where air's not being exchanged?

I had probably inadequate venting for a few months but got my 960cfm inline and I'm good. I couldn't imagine not using any, that sounds like death.

And trap any fume that does happen to float up into your face

I sit at the torch so the only fumes that might be trapped are my farts-
But seriously - i was only trying to be extra cautious. One of my "teachers" (youtube posters) seemed to think it was very necessary, even with a similar ventilation system, so for $14 bucks i went with it.
Thanks for the comments though Menty666 and TlkQ, its kind of a labor intensive pain in the ars to use so I'm gonna try not using it and see if i die (just kidding i mean see if i get a sore throat)

Yes I use a fan that's two feet above my head and three feet in front of me.It vents to the outside and it pulls 1520,1400, or1250 CFM it's a 3 speed. I had to make a shield for the motor so the flame from the phantom didn't hit it .

Because it has a poll, any time someone answers a poll question, even if they do not post, the thread will be bumped up.

Someone where I work used to work without the fans on. She said the person she learned from didn't have any ventilation. I was more concerned about her blowing the studio up than killing herself....
My studio is 23x10x8 so less than 2000 cuft. 4 benches each has a 750 cfm inline so a total of 3000 cfm. This means the air is exchanged in the room in less than every minute if I am not mistaken. Also there is a huge 4 sided swamp cooler ducted to the intake window.
