i want to dissolve silver nitrate in water and coat glass tubing with it.

i figure inner fire tube is like this

im looking for some direction on what concentration to use

and if i need a binder and if so, recommendations

i have the silver nitrate now. i just want to minimize the amount of trial and error.

is that safe for functional glass? any danger in the silver nitrate coming off from heating?

it will be melted into the glass just like fume.

think about your silver based colors.

I always wanted to dissolve in Everclear and then dilute it to a non flammable concentration with water. heat up a point a drip a drop or two inside...It may explode! I never tried this...but that is what I would do...

Considering that the main hazard on the silver nitrate wikipedia page is "Explosively reacts with Ethanol" I wouldn't mix it with everclear. It should dissolve into water without any problem. Why add the alcohol at all?

it does dissolve fine in water. use distilled water.. that's as far as i've gotten with trial and error, basically.

i think you will want a binder, because putting aqueous silver nitrate onto glass doesn't work well. it goes on blotchy, it doesn't sick or stay even.. it doesn't leave much of a residue like you're probably after. maybe a 200degree blank, and then painted with the stuff would make it evaporate quickly enough to get a smoother consistency... not sure.

i'd like to hear any input about this as well!
thanks

I used to use 7up to get enamels to bind to float glass in fusing applications.

Put a small dish out, let it go flat and warm and swab it on,let it dry, then apply your silver solution.

I didn't know Silver Nitrate explodes with contact of ethanol. Sorry for the bad info. I saw a video of people who would take a blank point, heat it up in the flame, pop it in a mold and blow (xmas stuff), Then they dipped it into a clear liquid, then another liquid I believe had Silver Nitrate in it. It instantly silvered! There has gotta be a getto way to DIY...I've asked before but never researched it enough to get an answer. Image how much time and product we could all save making silver xmas-Balls, birds, santas, xmas lights, bells!!!

I know one of my glass books talks about silver nitrate and may have some useful info... I think its this one
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/096244040X

I remember reading about it and thinking.." this would be cool"
That's as far as I got with it.

I could be wrong, pm me if I forget to look.
