I too herd that which sucks because that is how I heat my shop.. was told 23$ for a fill at airgas today then went to my normal spot where is usually 14$ and it was like $16.

They jacked the price up due to the extreme cold in the eastern us. Propane is a by-product of the gas refining process, no shortage, just greed.

I heard that the pipeline to the midwest was closed for a couple of weeks causing the spike in price. The news has been saying that the price has tripled to almost $4 gallon in some areas. Im gonna find out next week if my supplier raised their price. I feel terrible for my grandpa that can go through 400gallons in a month heating his 100yr old house.

i called today 4.99 a gallon... oct 16 i bought 250 gallons at 1.69 a gallon

fuckin scam i'll tell ya

needless to say i laughed in the ladies face.

there are plenty of other ways to heat your house.

even worse it says last friday which would be a week ago prices were at 1.75 a gallon then thursday it more than doubled to 3.39 a gallon then today it jumped to 4.39

oh and the price of the BBQ size tanks 20 lbs'er haven't changed. 18 bucks a swap all over town

so basically i figure the price of the propane in the bbq tanks is already as high...idk?

I work at a little grocery store, we do exchanges and our supplier raised our price like 4 bucks a tank.

I refill my tank elsewhere though, haven't been for a fill since the "shortage" but prices are certainly going up around here.

propane weighs 4.2lbs per gallon and the bbq tanks are 17 lbs

so if theres 4.04 gallons in a bbq tank then you're already paying almost 5$ a gallon

and in the summer when bulk prices are back at 1.70 per gallon, the bbq tanks will still be 4.95$ a gallon.

FUCKIN scam man:wes:

The other way the "swap" places keep their prices constant is by not filling the tanks all the way. Weigh the tanks you get, often there's not more than 2.5 gallons in them.

As for shortages, this explains it... http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-01-22/polar-pig-deserves-little-blame-for-propane-shortage-.html

also, more in depth on the pipelines freezing: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-01-07/arctic-cold-front-disrupts-natural-gas-pipes-and-oil-refineries.html

Once things thaw out, and trucks are able to get filled at fuel depots the price will fall again... anyone who buys more than a few dozen gallons at a time with prices this high are just pissing money away. Would suck to buy 1000 gallons because you panic thinking propane's somehow gone forever only to see the price drop like a brick in a month and you've still got half your tank full...

panic and speculation do more to spike the price of petroleum products than anything the operating companies and refineries can conspire to do.

No doubt Grey matter, I ALWAYS get my tanks refilled, usually at Agway. However we got snow last weekend and went to Exxon to the Paraco exchange....... what a ripoff, it was almost $5 more and the tank felt like it was half empty!..........never again

I exchanged mine at airgas for $17. But that was the special managers price. I guess she likes me. It was costing me $24 up from $15 last summer.

Who doesn't?

And for you guys that have been paying $1.XX for a gallon of propane... wow, I haven't paid those kind of prices for propane in what seems like 15 years. The price around here has held steady at $3.XX for several years.

I'm with this guy^^^

Propane is $2.80 a gallon down the street, and it has been for quite some time

I'm talking about a 500 gallon tank @ 1.69/gallon.

which is what it's usually at in the off season. They only jack up the price when its cold out.

So if you heat your house or have other reasons why you use that much propane its all about when you get your tanks filled, and if you wait till the middle of winter thats what you'll get. RIPPED off.

I fill (2) 25 gallon tanks for the shop so I don't run out... but I also have a 250 gallon tank for the house (I use it for the water heater and the stove, not our heat), but around here, it is still $3.XX for them to come deliver to that tank (100 gallon minimum), and has been for many years... all year round... although it is maybe 30 cents cheaper in the summer.

It's been $2.10/gal here for over a year now.

Has anyone heard of hydrogen/oxygen set up?

I'm sure price depends on where you are. In Colorado, we would fill a 1000 gallon tank to about 80% (800 gallons) and pay from $1,000 - 1,200. That's $1.25-1.50/gallon and it was delivered.

Has anyone heard of hydrogen/oxygen set up?
Yes, of course. It's pretty common for quartz working in scientific shops. There are some risks involved. For example, it does not come with an odorant, so you won't be able to smell a leak. It is very flammable and a straight hydrogen flame is pretty much invisible. You can't have anything flammable around where you're working because of this.

The flame with oxygen added is pretty cool, though. It's like a purple green flame. And it is very hot. I don't know how it treats colors.

What you really ought to ask about around here is the Brown's gas set-up. (kidding)

Great info
Brown it is. Thanks

Im trying to figure out a cheaper way.... Mmmmmmmm
Build a hydrogen cell, regulate it, arrest it, hose it to the torch. Free gas from batteries off the solar...?

I've been loading up on the mexican food and just hooked my ass up to a homefill. That's killing two birds with one burrito. Methane, wave of the future.

Some shops already run on methane. I'll let you figure out which ones are using your method and which ones use the gas from a landfill.

Landfill gas? That's disgusting!

colaroots

methane is a good "green" alternative to propane however it still requires a middle man(unless you love burritos) or have a tapped landfill in your back yard.
My point is self reliant gas production.

2.68 for home delivered and 2.75 at store for tanks...prices fluctuate slightly depending on where you go...north bay. hell of a lot of people use propane for heat round here...
